I do understand some folks in Western China shower less frequently due to water scarcity, cultural, environmental & cultural factors but bad odors are rare among Chinese.

I am an East Asian that does not believe this genetic malarkey.
Sure, we don’t reek like westerners do: take an old bus in Sydney during summer, after office hours - you’ll know what body odour means. We also had an American who fail to adapt to tropical climate - he sweats and stinks the entire room. We definitely don’t smell strongly like that.
But do we East Asians not smell?
BS. in a building chock full of mainland companies, the elevator stinks of used socks and tobacco smoke. I am referring to the smell of socks.
I guess the northerners also failed to adapt to tropical climate too, huh?
Sometimes, genetic matters less: it is the clothes, the fabrics that you wear, your sweat has some fat and protein on it - not the ones that attract foul smelling substance secrete-ing bacteria kind, but overtime, it builds up enough quantity that it also produce unique odour. It latched into the fabric.
Frugal Asian lifestyle means - you kept that same Shein, 50%, Uniqlo, GU, Spao or Musinsha clothing items for years - yes cheap fashion in Asia is very durable, unlike overpriced European disposable fashion items like Zara or H&M. No matter how careful you wash them, or powerful the detetgent soaps are, the smell will return when the right ingredient: your sweat, wets the fabric.
This is how East Asian typically produce stink: they just assume, and like Japanese attitude to B.O. prevention - they don’t use roll-ons or talcs, and when the situation gets them sweaty, they sniffed, realised, and then they distanced themselves from the crowd like we are plagued.
