I have worked with many Indian Engineers in Silicon Valley. At the beginning, I couldn't understand them a lot of times. Their accent is way too strong to understand. Besides they seem to have the attitude that their English is the standard, everyone else should get used to it.

Just for the record half of all singapore Chinese spoke english at home and increasing year by year. Speaking english at home meant they "think" in English and translate out in Mandarin if the conversation is in mandarin that accounts for the poor command of Mandarin for lots of them. In contrast people in hong kong "think" in Cantonese and Malaysian Chinese still "think" in dialect or mandarin that accounts for better cantonese or mandarin.

i'm speaking from pure shallow thought here .. but .. i assume the Chinese written language is an advantage in that it is visually recognised rather than "verbally" recognised (as in: written english is pretty much sound cueing .. the letters are indicators for sounds, not meanings).
Thus .. Chinese language (and similar) engage both visual and verbal mental processes .. a more complete perception.

oops! .. i'm going to undermine my own reasoning. Even though a word in english is constructed with individual letters which act as hints at pronunciation, when we're fluent we recognise the meaning of the word from the recognised shape of the word as a whole, and don't construct the word from the sound-hinting letters unless it's unfamiliar.

Chinese is easier to recognize than to pronounce correctly. Which is why scholars in Japan, Korea and Vietnam used written Chinese for nearly 2000 years, but the spoken language did not spread.

Many of my Indian colleagues’ English speaking and listening proficiency is at the same level as my American colleagues. That results in fast and accurate mutual understanding and trust. My Chinese colleagues don’t have the same level of English proficiency on average. They must supplement their communication with their work results. It’s often difficult to understand them in a meeting. Not able to speak and listen at the native speaker level means it is hard to be given a managerial position. This phenomenon extends to my European colleagues who speak with heavy accents.

Many Indians do have a good level of English, but that is not enough to make India great. As an English speaker who has traveled through both China and India, I would say that it is much easier for English speakers to communicate in India, but the infrastructure is far worse.

I was aware of most, and agree with almost all of what is said here. I am a Pakistani and I have to say with small differences, this is also true for Pakistanis. Mr. Hunzi's simple suggestions can help us rise from our abyss. Although Mr. Hunzi does not know the true reason why we are in such a sorry state of affairs. It is the climate and geography, that have the greatest influence over your IQ. Balmy weather year around and plenty of food in all seasons provided a nurturing environment where homo sapiens that migrated from Africa 70 thousand years ago found it so comfy that they never decided to go anywhere else, until now when the population has vastly outstripped food production. In hot and humid climates neither the body nor the brain wants to work. ( I read recently, ex Singaporean PM, attributing Singapor's rise in part to the discovery of airconditioning). You drop a useless obxt imperceptibly onto the ground and, either your lazy brain did not notice it, or even if it did, the body does not want to pick it up. And after eons, we have stopped even noticing it as a problem.

I've tried Udemy and YouTube, but they're all basics. Advanced sources are usually paid, and I don't know in which one to bet on, bcz claims and course curriculum are more or less the same, but the reality comes out to be different.

I am Singaporean, and I will tell you the average Singaporean speaks poor English and worse Mandarin. There are good speakers of both here, of course, but I'm talking about the average person. I remember when an American TV show aired a Singapore advertisement, featuring some Singaporeans speaking English. The put subtitles on, presumably because they could not understand the English the Singaporeans in the advertisement spoke. It was a complete joke. Most Singaporeans speak English with an accent that may not be understood by other English speakers around the world. Once, many mainland Chinese came here to study English. This has lessened compared to before, because some mainlanders realized that Singaporeans actually do not speak very proper English.

English is just a language and cannot create GDP on its own. Technology can create GDP.
India should have used English to learn Western technology when English speaking countries had technological advantages, making India a technological and industrial powerhouse. However, India has not achieved this. Currently, India's technology and industry are inadequate. English proficiency is used for bragging rather than learning.
Now, the world's most technologically advanced country is slowly shifting from the United States to China. This means that in the future, if India wants to learn advanced technology, it will have to learn from China rather than the West. Because Chinese people speak Chinese, but Indians can't speak Chinese.. This means that India has once again lost the opportunity to use its language advantage to learn technology...
