@NecessaryJudgment5 I was recently eating lunch with a bunch of people, one of whom was my friend’s Chinese wife. I was in Seoul a few months ago. I asked her if she wanted to visit South Korea. She said something along the lines of “I feel like South Korea isn’t that developed.” I pointed out that South Korea has a Human Development Index score of .937, while Sichuan, where she is from, is .76. She also thinks the place where we live now, which has an HDI of .92, is not that developed. To be fair, she has very strange opinions about a lot of things. She also claimed that the USA’s economy is mostly just agricultural. I pointed out that agriculture only accounts for a small part of the economy compared to 70-80% services.

She claimed that American army burned down the Old Summer Palace in Beijing in 1860 along with eight other armies. I pointed out that the British and French burned down the Old Summer Palace. The eight armies she referred to were the armies involved in suppressing the Boxer Rebellion, a completely different event. Edit: During another conversation, she told me that Sichuan is more developed and wealthy than Taiwan. When I presented statistics to the contrary, like per capita GDP and HDI, she refused to accept her position was wrong. She said you can’t use per capita data in this situation. I am not sure why….

@Evabluemishima Did she say Sichuan or Chengdu? Chengdu is probably as developed as Korea, although Soeul is more developed than Chengdu, at least from my experiences in both cities. Some people in China it’s more national pride talking. I do remember when I was teaching in Chengdu and a bunch of American students came over for a field trip. They were shocked how modern it was and felt it was in many ways more developed than the US.

@NecessaryJudgment5 When we were talking about Korea, she didn’t compare Sichuan to Korea. She just said Korea isn’t very developed. When we talked about Taiwan, I clearly remember her claiming Sichuan, not Chengdu, is more wealthy and developed than Taiwan. I think it is partially pride and partially her just having weird opinions about everything. She wanted to drive two and a half hours to Chicago to have her baby just so she could tell people her baby was born in Chicago, something no one in America would give a fuck about. I feel like most Americans lack knowledge about China and have outdated views; therefore, when they visit the developed cities like Beijing and Shanghai, they are surprised about how modern and developed things are. The difference in development between different areas in China is so drastic. Some places have HDI similar to Portugal and Greece, while others are similar to Morocco and Venezuela. Foreigners mostly just visit the developed cities, rather than the countryside in places like Gansu, leaving them with a good impression of China’s development.
