From fast-food jobs to entry-level retail, more and more young Canadians say they’re being pushed out of the workforce. But why?
In this episode of Toronto Unfiltered, we dig into a growing trend across Canada—where international students seem to dominate job sites that once belonged to local youth.
We visited multiple A&W restaurants across the GTA, spoke with customers, observed staff interactions, and documented our experience firsthand.
What we found was nothing short of eye-opening.

Small town BC
East Indian owner of motel with restaurant got rid of all Canadian staff, replaced them with East Indians but keeps his "now hiring" ads active to prove to the government that there are no Canadians willing to fill those jobs. They know how to play the system.
 
BC省的小镇上，一家带餐厅的汽车旅馆的东印度老板开掉了所有加拿大员工，全换成了东印度人，却一直挂着“招聘中”的广告，就是为了向政府证明没有加拿大人愿意干这些活。他们可真会钻制度的空子。

We shouldn't be subsidizing any jobs. If businesses can't afford to operate without taxpayer money, that is their problem.

I’ve all but stopped eating at fast food places specifically because of this. Can’t understand simple instructions, food quality is sub par, hygiene is questionable at best and the staff are incredibly rude every time I go. They just dump your food and walk away with out saying anything of hang it out the drive through window without looking at you. Not to mention prices have gone through the roof and you know it’s not because they’re paying staff more.
 
我现在几乎不去快餐店吃饭，根本原因就在这儿。他们连简单的指令都听不懂，食物品质完全不及格，卫生状况最多算勉强合格，每次去店员都无礼到极点。要么直接把食物一扔就走，半句话都懒得说；要么在驾车通道窗口递餐时根本不正眼看你。更别提价格已经涨上天了，而且谁都明白这根本不是因为他们给员工加了工资。

80% of employees at my Moms Senior Home are Indian. They have trouble with English instructions and speak Punjabi to each other in front of the Residents.

Some international students are offered new businesses that only hire their own. That’s the problem. Also banks are putting migrants first by giving them loans and mortgages with no credit credits.
 
现在有些留学生直接被安排进专门招聘自己人的新企业，这才是问题所在。更离谱的是银行居然还把移民放在优先位置，连信用积分都不看就给他们发放贷款和抵押贷款。

I do not understand why the govt is doing this. My two boys have applied for entry level jobs for 2 yrs now and they are not working. They are born citizens and cacasian. They do not deserve this. I will be stopping all sevices from any of these companys that are lixed to this betrayal

I was attacked by my neighbour and when I complained to the police and my landlord they acted like my neighbour was just expressing a different cultural norm and maybe I could stop being so bigoted about other cultures. Police were here daily for four months because whenever I left my apartment he would be in the hallway shouting in Punjab at me. Again, I complained about fearing for my life and the powers that be made it out like he was simply saying good morning to me and I was making a mountain out of a molehill.
He eventually moved out…I really hope no other women are the victim of his “cultural norms” though if they were treated like I was we won’t ever know.
Stay safe my Canuck comrades and hold the line.
 
我被邻居袭击后报警并联系房东，可他们却摆出一副「这只是文化差异」的架势，反倒暗示我应该收起对异文化的偏见。整整四个月警察天天上门，因为每次我出门，那个人就堵在走廊用旁遮普语冲我嘶吼。当我再次强调自己的性命受到威胁时，当权者竟轻描淡写地说「他不过是在问早安」，指责我小题大做。
这个人总算搬走了……但我真心希望不要再有女性成为他所谓「文化习俗」的受害者。不过若其他受害者都像我这样被对待，真相永远不得而知。
加拿大同胞们请多保重，一定要守住底线。

I work at a call centre and the client said to me "I feel like you're helping me and that I understand you" and I said "well I'm glad because it's my job to help you and of course I hope you understand me" and she said "everytime I call there I feel like you guys are not helping me and I can't understand what the worker is saying"

I live in a small town of around 5000 in Ontario. We had a Pizza Hut and Wendy's open in the last year. They opened without a single local working there.

I worked in fast food as a teen 15 years ago. Very diverse staff mostly Canadian. Now fast food is literally 80% foreign workers now. Its insanity

Most of the security and customs at Toronto Pearson are now Indian. That means that more will continue to come into the country.

I live in Vancouver and I will never eat at A&W again. Nobody there speaks English. There is not one Canadian working at any of those stores. That chain has not the dust.

The Indian owner of a local dollar store had a group of employees come from the company to do an inventory. Probably around 30 people, 29 of them were Indian. Is this not racism?

Temporary foreign worker program must be abolished permanently. There is so much talent in Canada and Canadian citizens are struggling to find jobs. Labor department must visit all business establishments and scrutinize the employees to ensure that a Canadian citizen with those skills was not ignored. Many businesses employ international students over Canadian citizens and this must be stopped. First preference must be to citizens only but not to temporary visa holders . Wish someone in Canada starts a movement in this direction.
 
临时外国工人计划必须被永久废除。加拿大本地人才济济，可本国公民却苦苦挣扎找不到工作。劳工部门真的应该亲自走访所有企业，仔细核查雇员的情况，确保没有忽略具备相应技能的加拿大公民。现在好多企业宁愿雇佣国际学生也不给本国人机会，这种风气必须刹住。招聘门槛就应该优先对公民开放，而不是让临时签证持有者占先。真希望加拿大有人能发起一场推动这个方向的运动。

They say these jobs were just for teenagers, that's not totally true. While a lot of teens and college kids took these jobs, there were always older adults doing them as well.
 
总有人说这些工作不过是给青少年准备的，这种说法实在不够准确。虽然确实有很多中学生和大学生在做这些工作，但一直以来也有不少年长者在从事这些岗位。

I dont understand why they are only bringing in immigrants from india？what about wealthy Chinese, Koreans, Japanese, Taiwanese, or singaporeans? we should be bringing in the richest immigrants from the richest countries. but why are they bringing immigrants from the poorest countries? makes no sense. PR should cost $100k. work visa and student visa should cost $10K. that should at least fliter out the poor.
 
我实在搞不懂为什么只从印度引进移民？那些富裕的中国人、韩国人、日本人、台湾（地区）居民和新加坡人呢？按理说应该从最富裕的国家引进最有钱的移民才对。可现在偏偏从最穷的国家招人，根本说不通。永久居留权至少该标价10万加元，工作签证和学生签证也要收1万加元，这样至少能把穷人筛选掉。

I just got back from a road trip to Alaska from Victoria, BC recently. This is even happening in the YUKON!!! Multiple places we went into all had non white staff. We bought some groceries from a Real Canadian Superstore in Whitehorse, and every single staff member we saw that morning were mostly Indian/Pakistani. There were a couple of other Asians. Funny thing though, in Alaska, most staff in stores and restaurants were white. Very noticeable difference.
 
我最近刚从从不列颠哥伦比亚省维多利亚市到阿拉斯加的公路旅行回来。连育空地区居然也在发生这种情况！！！我们去的多个地方全都是非白人员工。早晨在怀特霍斯的Real Canadian Superstore超市买东西时，我看到的每一个员工基本上都是印度或巴基斯坦裔。还有几个其他亚裔。不过有意思的是在阿拉斯加，商店和餐厅里的大部分员工可都是白人。差别特别明显。

My friend is a nurse and works in long term care. She found out recently that the home she works for in ontario is ot renewing the contracts of foreign workers because they will have to pay them full wage so they got rid of all these nurses/psws and have replaced them with new foreign workers where the government subsidises half their hourly wage. She said they don't hire canadians anymore because there's no incentive or subsidises

I was in Buffalo NY yesterday, where all the workers were white and black people that spoke clear concise English, had a good sense of humour, it was so refreshing and made me forget what that’s like. Toronto’s customer service sucks
 
昨天我在纽约州布法罗市，那儿所有的员工不是白人就是黑人，英语说得清晰流利，幽默感也十足，那种感觉实在太爽了，简直让我忘了正常的服务该是什么样。多伦多的客户服务简直烂透了。

Start doing what i'm doing. I go to Google Maps, and i rate each restaurant that i attended that had 100% foreign workers, giving them 1 star, with the comment, "since this restaurant refuses to hire Canadians, i'll refuse to give them my business. Please AVOID this restaurant." It does make a difference.
 
大家跟我学就行了。我现在每去过一家全是外籍员工的餐厅，就会上谷歌地图打一星差评，留言写：“既然这家店不肯雇加拿大人，那我也不肯再来花钱，请大家尽量避开这种餐厅。”这么干确实有用。

When I first visited Victoria this year and bought a coffee from Tim Hortons, all I saw were South Asians staff. I have to ask my wife if we’re in an Indian coffee shop. The starbucks on the other hand seems to be more diverse and the customer service is much better.

There is something significant that this country is not addressing: "fake degrees" coming out of India, especially in the field of Engineering. I'm a recruiter at one of the largest recruiting agencies in Ontario (Toronto), but I've been noticing something unusual about the degrees coming out of India. This is something that the government needs to address. Big companies like Hydro One, Toronto Hydro believe everything under the sun, I guarantee you, if they can do a thorough investigation, something may come out, "something not good".
 
有件要紧事儿加拿大始终没有认真解决：就是从印度流出来的"假文凭"，尤其在工程领域。我身为安大略（多伦多）最大的招聘机构之一的招聘专员，近来确实察觉到印度的学历有些蹊跷。这事儿真得政府出手管管。像Hydro One、多伦多水电公司这些大企业，现在什么文凭都敢信。我敢打包票，要是真的彻查起来，准能挖出些"见不得光"的勾当。

These freeloaders have no shame. When I was a kid back in the 70s, it was considered shameful to even be on unemployment, let alone welfare. It was a huge embarrassment for families to get government assistance.
Now we have people who step off a plane and are handed a cheque and a healthcare card and don't even think twice about where it comes from.
 
这帮吃白食的简直不知羞耻。想我上世纪七十年代那会儿，领失业金都觉得丢人，更别提蹭福利了。那时候谁家要是靠政府的补助过日子，整家子都抬不起头。如今可好，有些人刚下飞机就能领支票和医保卡，压根不在乎这钱是从哪儿来的。

I hold an undergrad and a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering from one of the top Universities in Canada. I also served in the Canadian Armed Forces on a 2-year contract, but I'm having trouble finding a job now. Sometimes I feel like employers are frightened by the fact that I was in the military.

My wife is East Indian, moved to Toronto when she was 12. She only speaks English, has no accent.
She refuses to live in areas that are majority South Asian. The low standards in customer service, the poor hygiene, the lack of ethical and moral standards, ALL OF IT. She hates it.
She is correct.
Also, if a "halal" store pops in your area, it is time to move.
