In Taiwan it's ever worse; condo can easily cost 30X the annual salary!
(Most Taiwanese' salaries are much lower than S. Korea's, while the properties aren't noticeably cheaper.)

This is virtually universal in almost all the rich countries

@letsgobrandon1719
@TheDressking I look on Naver and see 30 pyung apartments in the Youndeungpo area for under 1-1.5 billion won. It's even cheaper in other parts of Seoul. Where are you getting 4-6 billion won? That's almost $3-$5 million USD. That's Gangnam prices. Seoul is not all Gangnam. It's a big city.
@SanaNote
@yamuiemata
South Korea's issues are different than other countries with wealth cap inequality because of how competitive everyone is and "keeping up with the Kardashians" so to speak mentality.
@adamsaciid4919
with out competion s. korea would be the same of n. korea , so every success has a consequence
@juanjorge751
I mean is the same on Mainland China as far as i know, i guess North Est Asia is just a ranked server.
@yamuiemata
@juanjorge751 yeah but mainland C has a autocratic leadership that will cut off the ones who show off their wealth....unlike S.Korea where the population wants to follow the wealthy people trend in fashion

Whats sad is the number of elderly in Seoul living in poverty. Its not really a sight you see in Japan, Taiwan or the Chinese diaspora in South East Asia. I was wondering why the government just doesnt given them a livable pension since Korea is wealthy
@uludak8468
bc poverty is kept out of sight in tourist spots in general
@ikash-mi9ub
one of the biggest culture shocks living in korea is seeing elderly people, hunched over, doing manual labor to afford to live. like picking up garbage in the street, selling vegetables at markets, being janitors in office buildings etc.
@noeminoemi1350
elderlies like to work to keep themselves productive and useful.
@jiminswriter4209
The elderly do get a pension. You are fooling yourself if you think there is very little elderly poverty in those other countries.
@zevil89
I literally live in South East Asia and we do not send 70 year olds to pick cardboard boxes. At the very least we give extended older relatives a place to stay and food. A floor to sleep on and 3 simple meals a day isnt expensive. Thats why I was shocked to see the elderly carrying heavy carts in Seoul.
@hkkim8718
Gov'ts (national, municipal) and organizations provide shelters and warm food; however, there are also many who prefers freedom over shelters with rules.
@curethe9776
As koreans, we need to abandon the desire to elevate our status above others. most Koreans derive happiness from having things that others do not, such as prestigious universities, jobs, income, appearance etc ..and they take pleasure in flaunting these achievements to provoke envy in others. however, only a few people can truly achieve this. We need to learn to find happiness in what we have now. The government should have instilled the principles of jante’s law during the era when they exercised strict control over the citizens. Lol
@workinperkins
Considering the land mass and resources, it makes sense that it would be centralized. When the resources accumulate to the point where they naturally overflow, the growth into other areas will happen naturally. The best thing that Korea can do is work toward self-sufficiency to lessen imports.

One of the big issues is seeing the elderly working when they should be retired and getting a pension or social security. That is sad to see.
@theojeong521
I live in Australia, and the social welfare system here is much greater. I feel for my relatives back home where they earn peanuts, and theyre approaching the age where they are forced to retire (early 60s). The pensions are definitely not enough for these forced retirees
@catmanfpv9213
Koreans, try to be more grateful and happy with what you have now. Live is short, chill. Don't be too kiasu.
@Enchanteralle
Wow, traveling 2 hours one way to high school?! Kudos to that guy. Issue with wealth gap seems to happen all around the world, but I'm feeling grateful that there's more opportunities in the U.S. to make a decent living.
@Magerquark
In my opinion wealth gap only really matters, when low income workers or people on job search currently not working, are not able to participate in regular life, which means being able to afford food, maintain a cheap car, occasionally go out to eat / go to the cinema / parks.
It gets very problematic when low income can not afford healthcare
@jyd1384
Well...most EU nations and even the strongest one, the US have had lots of poor people located in lower social classes and homeless guys here and there. Of course, South Korea also has this unsolved matter, which means most rich nations couldn't find the best answer to solve this complicated thing whatsoever. Why couldn't the superpower America build useful alternatives or laws in the US Congress? Most democratic states based on capitalism couldn't find the right answer to solve this ultimate question. People can't make their proper answers for this thing. But they know the fact that all people must have fair and reliable chances to create better living conditions irrespective of their age, sex, and resident location in South Korea. Basically, many Korean international companies have focused on foreign markets such as the US and EU nations so far. Supposing they can go back to South Korea sooner or later, younger people in South Korea may find their chances.
@arc2348
@busterboyd4125
Here's my advice to young Koreans. Speak with your wallet. If you feel that conglomerates are at the root of this wealth gap then stop feeding those companies. Stop buying Korean cars, stop buying Korean washing machines, stop shopping at malls run by Jaebols. They can't exist in Korea without consumers. Also, stop valuing jobs at these conglomerates. Don't apply there, don't marry people who work there, and don't talk positive about those jobs. Everyone in Korea after graduating college wants a job at Hyundai, Samsung, LG, etc. while at the same time complaining about the wealth gap. Without a change in mindset nothing will change. Change doesn't happen easily. It's often very painful.
@MyWorldIsYourOyster
BTW, there's zero guarantee that you'll end up on a fortunate path despite going to hagwons/private education. Society is far too competitive and the educational system is corrupt. Students nowadays only want to answer the questions correctly rather than learn the material.
Personal effort was far different from the Silent generation vs Boomer generation... Now, it's so difficult to catch up with wealth margins. It's a huge factor why the birth rate decline and population decline is inevitable with developed countries.
