Why do some tourists who have visited both the USA and China think the latter is safer?

I’ve lived in the USA all my life and I can honestly say i feel safer in China and more welcome in lots of area’s
My reason’s are the following
The public transportation system they have in the big cities makes what we have in Chicago and New York look like we don’t care about moving people around safely. Here is a picture from the Shenzhen Metro system. If you look you can’t fall on the tracks because of the glass wall with doors that will only open when there is a train in the station.

The high speed rail system is a must in China. I wish the USA would start in invest in a rail system to replace the aging system we have in place today. I will grant that China has to have the rail system because how else would you move 400M people around in 30 days for a holiday. The high speed rail system is great with the exception that you can lose phone and internet services at times but when you are going 200+ miles an hour and have tunnels cell services is a something you can get deal with for the short time.
I’ve taken the bus in China many times and they can be a little scary but no more scary than some of the drivers in the USA.
The people in the countryside have always been friendly and even if they don’t speak English they are willing to try to help out or at least try to help.
The food we think of as Chinese isn’t even close.
Here is a dish from Chengdu China and it’s a little spicy but it was worth it if you can handle the heat.

I have been to the US innumerable times from east to west. I have also been to large parts of China in the many years I have been in China.
Why do some tourists who have visited both the USA and China think the latter is safer? …… because China is much safer then the USA.
I meet regularly with a group of retired expats in China. They are Americans, Australians, Brits, Canadians, Dutch and Swedes. All agree China is much safer then the US, Canada & UK.

First of all, most people have a stereotypical false impression about China before they come. Most foreign media has painted China in a negative light for decades, so tourist expectations lean certain ways before they arrive. Once they arrive in China ….. surprise,……. it is not like they imagined.
China is a non-violent society where social stability and order is very important. Asian societies generally function as shame cultures while western societies function as guilt societies.
Violence is not an acceptable social behaviour in China. Not acceptable by the government nor by Chinese society. Peer pressure is effective in shame cultures. This combined with China having a reputation that once you go to prison in China, you don’t want to go a 2nd time. It’s recidivism rate (% of prisoners who re-offend) is extremely low.
In my many years in China, I have only ever once seen one fight (men drinking too much) and they were westerners.

I’m a US citizen who has traveled to China a month at a time for over 10 years.
It is my impression that China is much more safe than the United States when it comes to violent crime. The city that I spend most of my time is xiangtan, CN. It is a city of over 750,000 (larger than all the cities over 100,000 population in Connecticut where I live). I have spent quite a bit of time in Beijing, Nanjing, Shanghai, Kunming, Changsa, etc., all of these cities having populations in the millions. During my visits to these cities I only experienced a safety concern once. That was a group of young teenagers that followed me for awhile but showed no aggression but left me with an uneasy feeling.
First, visitors as well as Chinese citizens have to be vigilant when they go out as theft is endemic in China. Crimes of violence such as Murder, Rape, Robbery, and Aggravated Assault appear to be non-existent although I know it is not. Chinese television reveal there are plenty of domestic assaults although rarely on fellow citizens and even less on foreigners.
I can go to parks in the middle of the night in major cities in China to use the exercise equipment without reservation. Again, keeping vigilant about what is going on around me. People have tried to steal money from me, steal train tickets, scam me, etc. When it comes to personal safety I feel very safe.
I won’t even go to Hartford, CT at night, and I don’t even like to go during the day. Same in New Haven and Bridgeport. These cities as well as their neighbors such as East Hartford, Meriden, New Britain, etc. all have issues with violence, many of which is driven by drugs. So when you can walk downtown in a city with millions of people in China and feel safe, rather than a city of 50,000–100,000 in the US because of random gunfire that is why tourists consider that China is safer.
It should be noted that Connecticut is considered pretty safe compared to other states in the US.

In China, the violent crazy people don’t have guns, and women mostly don’t have to live in fear of assault.
China - World Leader.
Simply, because it is, much MUCH safer, you don’t have to worry about getting mugged or accosted, I once staggered down a dark street two in the morning drunk as can be, my wallet still full of money, and was perfectly safe, that’s just the way it is.

China attitude to crime is serious, DEATH is legal. people around will away from you if they know you have crime record, and most of company would not employee a people with crime record.and you might not be able to get any loan from the bank. so people will consider very seriously before crime while crime cost is too high living in China.
No guns, many assault knife is not allowed to carry either
Culture to be kind, no violence gene
Fight will be caught by police and sent to a house of detention for 2–15 days
Rob is much serious crime than stolen, start from 3 years prison life, up to death
Many opportunity to make a living, easy to be postive for life
No drugs dealer, no prosititute, no refugees in the street, those people(no begger) with no job and stay in street will be highly concern by the police
Camera everywhere in public and all public transport and hotel need ID, daily security level is pretty high in China

I’ve visited both and I live in Thailand and visit China regularly. No question, China is safer. The people are less aggressive and more polite. They do not carry weapons. They police force is ubiquitous but not intrusive.

Never been to US.

Anyway, we banned guns in 1949 so it’s almost impossible to take bullets on China’s streets or in schools.
The government uses extreme methods to against drug traffickers, authority can just easily kill them with this one claim, no matter where they come from like Europe or US. So there will not be well organized and armed gangsters like South America and South East Asia, which means the bad guys cannot control an area to make a “no-go-zone” in some countries.
Han people is absolutely majority in China, most people feel free at their places. People will not form up like black community, white community, China town, little india etc, so that the conflicts between groups or races rarely happen.
Confuciusm, Taoism and Buddism do not encourage people to use violence, many people believe they will pay back if they do bad things
The Chinese government really treats foreigners well, and local authorities are scared to cause any “diplomatic problems” so that they take extra cares of foreigners.
That’s all I think about.
China is not very very safe, but in most cities young girls can walks alone at anyplace at midnight.

Why? Because it is. Ok maybe not in terms of traffic safety or long-term effects from air pollution, but in every other respect. Can barely understand that this question is asked in the first place.
Alfredo Cofré
I have visited both. In China, I felt VERY anxious because of the ammount of people and the disregard for every kind of traffic law (I was almost run over by a motorcycle going against traffic, in the pedestrian zone, by night without lights). Other than that, no problem. I got annoyed with rickshaw people following you to make you use their service and their general lack of interest in other people’s wellfare. Key word: ANNOYED.
On the other hand, in USA, every fraggin’ night a police car followed us. Maybe because we were the only human beings walking instead of using a car (or worst, jaywalking). Or maybe we looked like latinos doing latine things. Who knows. I really felt we could have got been shot. My coworkers were aim in the highway once, when they were pulled over and they, like every chilean does when pulled over a few meters from the police car, walked from their car to the police. Oh man… Keyword: AIMED WITH A GUN.
PS: I know, it was our fault for not knowing how to properly deal with US police. Do you think the last week australian lady mistake deserved to be punished with a bullet?
