Frustrating and hilarious
I am white but not super white. I don’t have the blond hair and blue eyes. The school I worked for was so proud of the blonde girl who I worked with. She was the star teacher. She didn’t speak English very well and wasn’t American but the school highlighted that she was the head english teacher. I was the native speaker but not the right skin tone.
I had a friend get hired at a lounge bar to play piano. He was good but his presence was what sold the lounge’s reputation. My friend mainly played pop music and generic songs on the piano but made bank.
I also seen black American posing as Africans in a theme park in Shenzhen. They were running around in loin cloths and acting like “African”.
I wish these positions would go away but I feel like they have gotten better over the years. I still see advertisements for “white” or “milky white” person needed for promos but not as many.

我有个朋友被一家休闲酒吧雇去弹钢琴。他确实弹得不错，但真正卖点是他的形象。他主要弹流行曲和一些普通曲子，但赚得盆满钵满。  
我还见过黑人美国人在深圳的一个主题乐园里假扮非洲人，围着兜裆布跑来跑去，模仿“非洲人”的样子。  
我真希望这些职位能消失，不过感觉这些年多少有点改善。现在偶尔还能看到招聘广告写着要“白人”或“奶白肤色”做宣传，但没以前那么多了。

It's written into the laws that Japan shall be subservient to the U.S. just look at all the passport bros in Japan thinking they own the place. It's sad.

Is Japan known as a passport bro location? I thought the main ones were Thailand and Colombia? Aren't most Japanese people pretty xenophobic (even though they are outwardly polite) towards outsiders, wouldn't this make Japan a less desirable location for passport bros?
Here in Canada, I see way more Chinese women with white men then I do Japanese women with white guys.

My perception and life experience would tell me that south Koreans are open to dating white people, as are Chinese people, more so then Japanese people.
But in terms of a "passport bro" destination, I always thought they wanted to aim for countries where they can seem rich, even if they are not really back in North America/western Europe.

从我的认知和生活经验来看，韩国人和中国人都比较开放于和白人约会，比日本人更甚。  
但说到那种“护照哥”目的地，我一直觉得他们更倾向于去那些能让自己看起来很有钱的国家，即使他们在北美/西欧其实并不算有钱。

I believe national pride in China has reached this point already. It's just the presence of non-Chinese people serving is a sort of power exchange which makes them feel more powerful. Also when a company wants to seem legitimate as they can afford to pay higher wages for foreigners working there. The education system in China is also so competitive that parents will try to seek out any advantages so what they perceive as a native speaker teaching their child will mean that they're not being taught wrong.

我觉得中国的民族自豪感已经发展到这个程度了。只是有外国人来服务，会让他们觉得是一种权力上的交换，从而感到更有优越感。而且公司如果想显得更有实力，就会请得起外国人、给他们更高工资。再加上中国的教育竞争特别激烈，家长会想尽办法给孩子找优势，他们觉得让“母语者”来教孩子，就能确保不会学错。

Having worked in China for several years as a Black professional, I’ve learned that the so-called “foreigner advantage” is not equally shared. Many companies want a “foreign look” for marketing, but often that really means a white face. I’ve faced situations where I was clearly qualified, but lost opportunities simply because I wasn’t the “right kind of foreigner.”
However, China is changing. I’ve noticed more people are curious and open-minded, and some organizations are making efforts to be more inclusive. There are still stereotypes and barriers, but I’m optimistic that things will keep improving as people interact with more diverse foreigners. Representation matters, and every positive experience helps break down old prejudices.

作为一名在中国工作的黑人专业人士，我深刻体会到所谓的“外籍优势”其实并不是人人都能享有。很多公司需要“外国面孔”做宣传，但往往指的是白人。我遇到过明明很合适的职位，却因为不是“对的外国人”而失去机会。

It's getting phased out and will likely considered a thing of the past in a couple of years. There's very stricts requirements to work legally in China, which include qualification and expertise, by default disqualifying most "white monkeys" jobs. The Chinese government has also been clamping down on foreigners working illegally in China, mostly on tourist or student visa, making it harder to land those kind of jobs. I would estimate most people working "white monkeys" jobs left during COVID and didn't came back since.

这种现象正在慢慢消失，再过几年估计就成了过去式了。现在在中国合法工作的要求很严格，包括资质和专业能力，大多数“白猴”工作一开始就不符合条件。中国政府也在严查外国人在旅游或学生签证下非法工作，这让找这种工作的难度更大。我估计大多数干“白猴”工作的人在新冠期间就离开了，而且到现在都没回来。

I was hired in Saudi Arabia as a supervisor based solely on my race as a Caucasian! My wife was hired with completely legitimate qualifications as well but they freaked out when she showed up w me and she was a Filipino-American!
They said..”why didn’t you tell us your wife wasn’t white? We can’t honor her salary as it will cause problems w our Filipino staff.
Saudis hire on a skin color basis. Sri Lankans & Pakistani’s at the low end..Brits Canadians & Americans highest.

At the end is all about sales is normal even for me as Latino in my country if we go to an English school and saw some blonde gringo as a teacher we will be more confident in put our money there knowing that we have more chance to improve our English there.

I remember teaching English in China a decade ago. Most of my coworkers were hired just for being white, not even native speakers! I always felt bad for the qualified local teachers who earned less but worked harder.

It’s a double-edged sword. Foreigners get jobs just for being white, but they’re also never really accepted as locals. The real winners should be those with actual expertise.

This kind of “face value” hiring isn’t unique to China, but it was definitely extreme there for a while. I remember a friend who worked in marketing for a major real estate firm—she told me her bosses would hire white people just to sit in the office during client visits or photo shoots. They didn’t even need to speak! The logic was that having a white person around made the company look more international and successful, which would impress clients and investors.
But as China’s economy has grown and people have become more worldly, this obsession with foreign appearances has started to fade. Now, many companies are more interested in what you can actually do, not just how you look. I think it’s a natural part of development—at first, there’s a hunger for anything foreign, but eventually, people want substance over image.

Don't think this is as common as it used to be. About ten years ago I did one job where I thought I was gonna help with a baking class speaking English and teaching the students a little about western dining etiquette. The Chinese sponsor had told the customers I was a master chef when I barely knew anything about what we were cooking. It all seemed so stupid in the end. I was there and got some money.

I used to do that about four times for a chemical company. Sitting there wearing a suit. Also hat to listen at conferences to make them more international. Paid travel and food.
