It's not so much about the mistake, as much it is how scaling plays into this, and how intuitive it can be. You'll notice the title doesn't try to make it about it being a Punk mistake, or even calling out the Woshige moment. The title tells you what you should be paying attention to.
The reason the larger doesn't combo doesn't kill is because the super is scaled to 50% damage. A shorter combo only takes it down to 60%, while in the last example, it was taken down to 70%. Each 10% is 450 less damage.
It's a teaching moment that adding more moves doesn't make a combo do more damage when supers are involved, because you have to account for losing scaling on not a move that does 1000 damage or less, but the scaling on a move that does 4500 damage.

Unlike most Kim's, I only do the loop twice with the first one going straight into the OD run because it does more damage, while giving me easier options to end the combo like DR 5MP>DRC 2HP>Run>LK if I'm confident in spending it all or DR LP>MP>2HP>HK Target Combo into 236LP so that I can save as much drive as possible while doing damage.
