China has been quietly driving an electric vehicle revolution in many parts of Africa, creating jobs and supporting a transition away from fossil fuels. A raft of African governments are welcoming Chinese EV imports and production. This comes even as the United States and the European unx slap higher tariffs on Chinese EV imports in a bid to counter competitiveness.

I hope many Africans get lifted from poverty
@xcx23cwea65
Hope they reversed engineer the tech and build their own.
@ZweiZwolf
Chinese EVs and BRI infrastructure can make that happen. EVs can be powered by inexpensive local solar power, rather than increasingly expensive gasoline, and China builds infrastructure that generates long term economic growth.

I hope the Africans can move to live in North America where land and natural resources are plenty, the same reason people from Europe went to live there.
@NoFrillz-G
@xcx23cwea65 They they don't have to reverse engineer it. China is sharing alot of the tech so they can service it moving forward. R&D will be sitll Chinese until the Africans are ready. Let's hope the west doesn't cause any civil war on the continent as they have done before.
@ZweiZwolf
@Anonymous------ Africa has more land and natural resources than North America, which is why Europe colonized them in the first place!
@tooltalk
@NoFrillz-G Sure, why doesn't China build solar panel factories or EV factories in Africa?
@NoFrillz-G
@tooltalk probably tons of reasons but, one of the reason is that a lot the resources and minerals needed for solar panels actually comes from China. Manufacturing in China is efficient and the resources needed are all close by. As for EV, the Africans might not be manufacturing the full car but, there are many batteries factories popping up in Africa supporting the EV ecosystem. Africa is playing a big part in the EV revolution not just blessed with minerals. Along with Sodium batteries, that will make batteries much cheaper with less dependence on rare earth creating a safer and cheaper battery accessible to the entire world. Africa will be the spoke in the EV electrified revolution potential cornering the Battery manufacturing market. I might be optimistic but, I do not doubt the African's grit and determination to power them forward to the next decades to come.

Why buying expensive cars from Europe while you can buy better cars with half the price from China
@user-hq3fg1wb4q
Buy expensive car from Europe is a smart move while buying cheap from China is a debt trap
@Jonipoon
Half the price, perhaps. But better? No way. I have tested several electric cars and the Chinese ones are definitely lesser in quality, much more plastic etc.
@Jonipoon
@jackychen5578 I've tested Byd, Ora and Xpeng, and I've tested Tesla, Polestar and Volkswagen's electric vehicles.
Even Chinese citizens themselves prefer western brands because of their higher quality, what do you want to discuss?
@jackychen5578
@Jonipoon I think no one will agree with you now. If it was ten years ago, I would agree with you. The quality of European brands at 50,000 euros is good enough, while the same Chinese products at 30,000 euros can reach the same quality.
@jackychen5578
@Jonipoon Even Chinese citizens themselves prefer western brands? Yes, for last 20 years. Not now. Huawei's high-end SUV has sold 15,000 units per month for several months, while BMW's X5 is now selling less than 10,000 units per month.
@damianjf6357
@Jonipoon not at all dude
In which universe Chinese preffer wenstern EV over Chinese made ones? Tesla's sales in China are getting slower and slower, other western brands as well while BYD is growing a LOT, it became the biggest EV company in the world lol
@Jonipoon
@tonyrogers5469
Jonipoon is a Korean, that says it all. Faking it as he tested the brands he mentioned. I can say cars from Korean are the worst that none of my Korean friend want one. On the roads in China, I only see 2-3 teslas out of every 100 cars
@user-zh6zv2kk5s
@jackychen5578 This guy must be a liar, he has definitely not tested Chinese EVs.
1. It is an accepted fact beyond all recognition that Chinese EVs generally have much better interiors than European, American, Japanese and Korean cars. consumers will vote with real money, not with their mouths. Volkswagen's ID series of EVs are less than half the price of their German counterparts in China, and they still sell dismally in China. In other words, consumers think a Chinese car that costs less than half the price of a European car is better.
@AlhasanBah
This is good. Africans can learn to manufacture this vehicle soon
@DW-op7ly
China built a high speed railway for Indonesia and gave them the technology to build more lines and trains
They are also sharing the samples they got from the farside of the moon which will have Helium-3 in it. As Helium-3 as a fuel for Fusion reactors can power the world for 10,000 years and will power space ships to explore the solar system and beyond
@eskay2012
@AlhasanBah - mining has to be controlled. Would you prefer to let the west mine the copper and take them away or African government control the mining?
@henli-rw5dw
@eskay2012 Africa should mine and ask China for technology so that Africa can also refine it's own mineral. This will keep most of the mining profit in Arica, and I think China will do it.

No raw material export.
18 May 2024 , Mali's economy minister said earlier this week that the deal could bring Mali $191.5 1 million per year.
Ganfeng Lithium will set up a spodumene plant which will start production by the end of the year.
Mali's share in the Goulamina project 35% , Chinese pay for all tech investments.
'Win-win agreement'
"With this win-win agreement, which defends the vital interests of the Malian people, the State of Mali enters into a new partnership with the Chinese group Ganfeng Lithium Co for the development and operation of the Goulamina lithium project," the statement said.
@ZweiZwolf
@henli-rw5dw Mines and the technology cost money, so how would Africa pay for this, given that Africa has no money of their own? They can be brutally exploited by the West as neo-colonial slaves, or they can keep some profit in a deal with China. When Africa can front the money to buy the tech, then they can keep ALL of the profit.
@henli-rw5dw
@ZweiZwolf The same way China does it with Indonesia. Have the Chinese company come in and partner with a local company. Chinese company will obvious get plenty of profit, but by being partner with locals, they gain expertise and can eventually run their own factory. There is plenty of incentive for China to do so, as Africa will be buying Chinese goods anyways with their profits.
@ZweiZwolf
@henli-rw5dw Sure, that model works, and it's basically what China is doing in Africa, Indonesia, and throughout the Global South. In those partnerships, China is bringing technology, expertise, training, management, and investment, so China naturally gets most of the profit because China carried virtually all of the cost and risk. The locals gain employment and experience that is ultimately transferrable, in the same role China was in decades ago.
However, you suggested that the locals get most of the profit, and that won't happen until they can invest with their own money to pay the upfront costs and shoulder the risk of failure.
@tooltalk
@happymelon7129 Are you kidding me? Ganfeng in Mali is just mining -- there is absolutely no high-value downstream refining/manufacturing involved in Mali. Do you even know what spodumenes are or how they are processed or how much energy required to refine them? China is not in Mali to develop the country -- Gangfeng is in Mali for the purpose of exploiting Mali's mineral resources and exporting them back to China.
@Michael-Ray
Imagine Africa overtaking the US in EV adoption due to no tariffs.
@larryevans6739
Solar energy as well. In the US, our solar subsidies are higher than the unsubsidized price of panels in China, and we still pay three times as much after subsidies. The cost of protectionism is more than the benefit. We could see some communities in Africa leapfrog on renewable energy and EV's.
@catinbootsnow4267
In Australia, Chinese electric vehicles are selling like hot cakes.
@huhwhatjason
I just love that CNA can't resist mentioning "subsidies" and the reporter asking leading questions like "how will Africa absorb the spare capacity?!!" Too afraid to just say "overcapacity"? We know whose narrative you're pushing, CNA.
@eskay2012
@huhwhatjason of course, CNA’s report is similar to BBC and obviously slanted and not any milder. CNA even have a segment specially in ‘East Asia’ and we know which country they hit on nightly.
@Trueye-sl2mr
I just bought a BYD Atto 3. It is a good, high quality car and handle very well
@tooltalk
Tanzania's electrification rate is only 40%. It's already difficult to build out EV charging infrastructure and enough power in regions with 100% electrific rate. This isn't necessarily helping.
@stellaandeddieluechin1087
WHEN YOU ARE GOOD AND A DOOR IS SHUT ANOTHER OPENS. THE WEST CANNOT CONTAIN A RISING TIDE " China".
@Macky1101
Why are western countries debating the merits of African countries opening their markets to Chinese manufacturers? Why are they debating about other countries that are not theirs?
@cainiaowu
They are jealous
@NoFrillz-G
Africa and most of the world needs options. The Anglo led war mongers don’t want you to have options. You have to deal with them with their rules based order. Where was this rules based order in Iraq, Libya and Syria.

this is why Africa is going to be the most dynamic continent in the future, as long as they can be aware not to fall into western divide and conquer and debt traps.
@Liboch
Not only in Africa. In Singapore the EV market share is dominated by Chinese EVs.
@thecomment9489
Singapore already has very high almost prohibitive tariffs on ICE cars. May be they can lower some for EV cars.
@Kingofthehill84
Evs has so many problems like battery pack caught itself on fire while in park, battery pack draining while in park especially in cold weather, chargers freezing up during subzero temperatures, slow charging especially when using multiple chargers at the same time unlike pumps gas stations, range anxiety, high cost of battery pack replacement, etc.
Evs is not the future for a varieties reasons that's why Elon is beginning to transition from evs to hydrogen cars in coming years from now.
@joey3291
@Kingofthehill84 Your impression of EVs lighting up themselves mainly came from the older generation batteries, the new LFP batteries used by Chinese EVs no longer do that. You can even penetrate the battery and it will not light up.
@victorchen9170
@Kingofthehill84 People still going on about EVs in the cold, meanwhile we have plenty in Canada, and you can look at the Scandinavian countries too.
@AlphaCookies
@Kingofthehill84 ive seen alot of ICE vehicles caught on fire too.. as long as EV is better for the environment I'm in.. my city getting less smoke since more EV are around
@Kingofthehill84
@AlphaCookies
ICE does not caught itself on fire while in park unlike the Evs. The Evs not only caught itself on fire while you're driving and parking its also can caught itself on fire even in submerge water literally you should have seen evs burning in the lakes
Can you imagine having 500,000,000 Evs on the roads worldwide in next 50 years from now and 10% of its are caught itself on fire??
