Yes. I'd just continue reading whatever......but hope that driverless taxis will do away with the car controls and focus on creature comforts including a table and pre ordered breakfast...great for private-ish meetings with a mini bar....or pick up from trainstation and go for drive up country.

I had lived in the UK long enough to know that these driverless cars won't survive till the next sunday. Afterwards Baidu will realize that they have to build the car to a spec of military standards, e.g. the car has to survive a few attacks from a flame thrower; the glazing has to be reinforced in case of breaking in; the interior has to be totally waterproof so that it can be waterjet cleaned in case of human contamination... The list of spec is going to extend everyday.

This video shows how limited this "self driving" is - like the Whamo - it only drives on specific digitally mapped streets.  Note they had to walk to a cross walk where the Vehicle stopped (is that smart? no it would have been much safer to be picked up in the parking lot but the SD car cant go into a parking lot) then it drove some. So you want a cheap way to get around that doesn't require a driver?  Use the Underground. These companies will go broke; every time they have an accident they will lose huge money that will wipe out any potential profit.

In terms of autonomous driving, many different companies and development routes exist in China, such as Huawei's self-driving cars that can be used without relying on high-precision maps. The blogger in the video is travelling in an unmanned taxi from Baidu, which currently needs to get in and out of the car at defined locations for safety reasons, but perhaps after a year of technological development and the accumulation of enough data, the freedom to get in and out of the car could be realised next year. Perhaps in a few years, unmanned taxis will be very mature.

And why is that? There are already more than 1,000 unmanned hire cars operating in Wuhan every day, and more than 5 million orders have been fulfilled so far, without anyone getting hurt or worse. The data suggests that existing driverless hire cars are actually safer than humans.
One interesting point is that do you know why Wuhan was chosen as the location for China's first unmanned taxi car pilot? It's because the city has the highest rate of fatal road accidents in the whole of China, and the city's drivers of all types are known for their bravery behind the wheel, claiming to be no match for Formula 1 racers. Even the city's bus drivers are claimed to be retired Formula 1 racers, and it is said that bus drivers from Wuhan who go to other cities to find a company don't need to be interviewed and are hired directly. There are too many legends about Wuhan drivers in China. If unmanned hire cars can perform well in Wuhan, there is basically no question of them being rolled out across the country.
Moreover, the Chinese government is still cautious about the qualifications needed to operate unmanned taxis, and not every company can do so, but must have the appropriate technical and financial strength to apply for a trial run. At present, not many cities have been approved, but with the development of technology will be slowly liberalised.
If someone gets hurt or worse in an unmanned taxi, it will be handled in accordance with the relevant traffic regulations, and then continue to develop the technology and accumulate data, aiming for fewer accidents until safer driverless technology emerges.
The development of any technology cannot be 100% safe, it has its own development process. We are now at the tipping point of the breakthrough of driverless technology, and it is very right to be cautiously optimistic. The Chinese government is doing exactly the right thing, and I'm 100 per cent in favour of it.

有一点很有趣，即你知道为什么中国首批无人出租汽车试点会选在武汉吗？因为这个城市的交通事故致死率是全中国最高的，该市的各类司机以开车勇猛著称，号称不输F1方程式赛车手。就连这座城市的公交车司机也都号称退役的F1赛车手，据说武汉市的公交车司机去其他城市找公司不需要面试，直接录用。在中国，有太多太多关于武汉司机的传说。如果无人出租汽车在武汉市能取得很好的表现，基本上在全国推广就不存在问题。
而且，开展无人出租汽车运营是需要资质的，中国政府对此还是比较谨慎的，并非每一家公司都可以，必须要有相应的技术和资金实力才可以申请开展试运营。目前批准的城市并不多，但是会随着技术的发展慢慢放开。
如果无人出租汽车发生有人受伤或出现更糟的情况，那就按照相关的交通法规办理，然后再继续发展技术，积累数据，争取出现更少的事故，直到更安全的无人驾驶技术出现。
任何技术的发展都不可能百分百安全，它都有其发展过程。我们现在正处在无人驾驶技术突破的临界点上，对此持谨慎乐观的态度是非常正确的。中国政府的做法完全正确，我百分百赞成。

Wiith Uber as an example you have independend drivers insuring themselves; here the company takes all the liability.  The self driving car even with all these limitations won't make any profit - this is suppose to be about making some money not an experiment.

One accident will not cost you all your profits. The companies that are qualified to compete have strong technology and large revenue scales, they can afford the upfront R&D and rollout costs, and they have their eyes on the hundreds of billions of dollars a year taxi market.

You also need the people who have brains developed enough to make good use of such advanced technologies. If this driverless taxi operated in India our low IQ masses will try to steal things from it and some may even try to steal the whole taxi. So both advanced tech and advanced citizenry work in sync to make advanced country.

Here in the US, they just talk about self driving cars, but they are too afraid to actually implement them. That's what I like about China, they aren't afraid to go the next step.
