Riding Baidu’s Robotaxi: Inside Wuhan's self-driving future

I am in China right now. As far as I know many cities are preparing the entrance of the driverless taxi, including some of the big ones like Beijing and Shanghai. Baidu, the Chinese equivalent of Google and the owner of the taxi service showing in this vlog is confident that based on the current data, their taxi service is going to make money in as early as 2025. The service fee they are charging is dirty cheap comparing to that of a human drive taxi in Wuhan. This has already caused a formal petition from the taxi drivers to limit the operation hours of the driverless taxis. It is so overwhelming that a world changing revolution is happening so quietly yet so strongly just right in front of my eyes.

@garylee9668 We need to start creating a system for a post-employment economy. Automation is making many jobs unnecessary. We've gotten to the point where actually requiring all people to do work isn't possible.
@niuwa55
@miltonlai4850
It really depends on how local government will support it, I put my bets on the driverless cars.
@donacatanguma
Lee, it’s truly incredible, but I’m not sure I’d be brave enough to try it. I do agree though that it’s probably safer than a human driver who may be distracted, etc.
@flyingnan2520
Take it easy. You are probably not brave enough to try it this year. But you perhaps have more confidence about trying this next year. After three years, when driverless taxis are so popular in the society, you probably open your arm to hug the mature technology.
@bmk8018
amazing. China is well suited to do this kind of development. among many other things, the west is also too risk averse for this kind of development and thus will be left behind.
@tluangasailo3663
@bmk8018 well, in the US there is self driving taxi long before China did
@catttcattt
If AI is going to be self-aware it is going to happen in China not San Francisco in the US. Then the T800 will be a Chinese looking folk.

When you come to an intersection, what happens if there's a driver coming from the left or right and ignores the red traffic lights? Happened to us in Shanghai - thank god our taxi driver acted quickly. By the way, I made sure my father who was sitting in the front seat to wear his seat belt even though the driver insisted it wasn't necessary.
@style4807
@xiaohuwang3221
lol,passenger sitting in front without seat belt is illegal in shanghai, passenger will not be penalized but the driver will be fined ¥300

The next big wave is "low altitude flying economy." That is something I have always wanted to see. All the movies about future have low flying cars and flying delivery services. I want to see that a reality in China. Not some test runs but full booming economic model.
@TAL142
They would trash this in the US. So they really can't have this in the US. If I travel to China more, I probably would need to buy a Chinese smart phone. What app do they use for this and do they use mainly Didi for taxi everywhere in China?
@user-gi4ww3br5k
You don't need to buy a Chinese phone, you just need to buy a SIM card. The best choice for foreigners now is Didi.
@tluangasailo3663
Wrong, Waymo & Cruise self driving in San Francisco, Phoenix, LA are doing fine , no one trash them
@jimkuan8493
As there are more self driving cars are deployed throughout Chinese cities, there will be a need and motivation to make the roads and using of the roads more orderly. Self driving cars will make Chinese roads much safer to travel. People won't park their cars random on roads or cross roads randomly, as the rules will be much stricter now given the deployment of self driving cars.
@letsinvestigateit
Wow they are way ahead of tesla. Pretty insane how well it drives. I said i would never get in a robo taxi but after seeing this I would now. If they can figure out a way to get rid of the steering wheel in the future they could probably let people sit up front too.
@nenadmilosevic5162
this is good but only for the areas that are less populated and have lees traffic because people mostly dont respect the distance between cars
@flyingnan2520
It has been tested in the less populated area for years. Today this driverless taxis are tested in the very crowded area, the center of a megacity with 14 million population.

The technology is there. It will be a challenge to roll it out in stages so to give time for drivers to train and transition to new jobs. A lot of jobs will be lost impacting families.

The US already have a driverless taxi system in place for a couple of years already. But only in one city . Forgot the name. Saw it on YouTube a few months ago.

What kind of paint on roads do China use? so clear and contrast. Here in Los Angeles, Paint on the roads all so pale, will self driving cars work here? I wonder.
@JohnnysCafe_
In the West the police would be following "we have a runaway vehicle, attempting a pit manoeuvre"
@tluangasailo3663
@JohnnysCafe_ well not happen though with waymo & Cruise self driving taxi

@simonbarrett9568
Very good .but what will they do for taxi drivers in China they will all lose there job this is a big problem for the government and the taxis driver l here there not happy the taxis drives the government need to look for more way of make jobs for them
@jeff6161
Not a good reason. Nobody is owed anything in life to prevent progress. You adapt
@simonbarrett9568
@jeff6161 yes but you need to look for new way to make jobs for people in China young people have very education so in time thing will not be that bad but in western countries government own think of the rich get richer not the people this is the problem for western people
@karmandalas
I doubt in Singapore or Japan gov will allow this, coz many low income uncles rely on this to make a living
@garylee9668
very true, that's my concern too in China.
@bowang9032
They have online surveillance staff,aka security personnels, one per three cars. It’s like someone else playing GTA V on a computer screen while you sit in the actual car. Still better than one person one car, but everyone could clue Elon in one this, I mean before he can work out all the kinks on FSD, it’s “supervised” right?
@616pang5
many didi and taxi drivers will be out of job and i wonder how the government China will be solving impending social problem.
@karmandalas
Why they still need the steering wheel and driver's seat?
@gchvjbjchxx
Existing legal norms do not allow for cancellation, and autonomous driving also requires the driver's seat to be occupied and hands to touch the steering wheel, which in practice is not required at all, which requires legal upxes to be accelerated.
@zarg05
Eat your heart out Elon !!!
@tluangasailo3663
Tesla FSD is better, it doesn't restricted by geofencing and HD map, it literally can go anywhere even in off road , dirt road, forest , near the lake etc
@conflictionated387
@tluangasailo3663 FSD is slightly worse in that it doesn't actually work.
@tluangasailo3663
@conflictionated387 wrong, Tesla full self driving is better than any robotaxi by an order of magnitude
@conflictionated387
@tluangasailo3663 You can assert it all you want, but there it is: still requiring an attentive driver at all times. Not quite "self-driving", not even close to it.
@tluangasailo3663
@conflictionated387
It requires a driver because it's not a robotaxi, but it can function similarly to one. Additionally, Tesla's FSD is designed to operate anywhere, unlike robotaxis which are typically limited to carefully designated geofenced city areas....
@GreenKnight7
Why is Tesla taking so long to release their self driving cars?

Having a chat with the Taxi driver is part of the human experience. HiTech is incredable but it has no soul.
@fungfung4229
soul?Why don't you live in ancient times? Why do you use your mobile phone to send text messages instead of writing letters?
@Big_Blue_Monkey
You'll still need normal taxis because most people won't get in a driverless one until they've been around a couple of years or so and the evidence proves them to be safe. Even then there'll be a lot of people who won't be convinced by the technology, ask your friends and family how many would get in one if they were operating where they live, I bet most of them currently wouldn't.
@raygan777able
That's the down side I guess. But I'm equally confident that the Chinese govt will find other means for these drivers who are about to lose their jobs. Or perhaps they will strike a balance on the number of driverless taxi they'll be deploying on the road.

But to design n program n execute such autonomous system and its infrastructure is quite astonishing feat.

Arthur Kroeber (founder of Gavekal Dragonomics) was asked recently: "It looks like China is facing challenges in global supply chain realignment. People are saying China’s status in the global supply chain is hard to replace, but what about the prospects over the long run? Who will be the “next China”, India or Vietnam?" His reply: "The short answer is that there is no “next China”. There’s no one else." Kroeber is correct. There is only one China, period. Unique.

China is moving ahead in technology. In the west, the taxi cab drivers will try and block this technology. Vandals would try and sabotage it.
@technatezin
Understandable. In the west if a big technology company comes out with something like this, the people who end up being laid off from their jobs are on their own. Automation is introduced only to make rich company shareholders even richer. The former employees who used to have a job at a company before automation was introduced are left on their own. Whether you end up in poverty or homeless, the company who automated your job doesn't care and neither does the government. You're entirely on your own and nobody will help you. In the selfish and narcissistic west, people who end up jobless are looked down upon as useless losers and not unfortunate victims of circumstance deserving of help. This is one of the reasons for the high crime rate, narcotic abuse, violence and homeless you see in the west.
