How will falling birth rates affect the global economy? | BBC News

The global population is still growing, with the UN predicting that it will peak at 10.3bn in the 2080s.
But in many advanced economies, it's falling, with both rates below the 2.1 needed to keep a population stable.
But why? And how will it affect the global economy?

I don't think money is the real reason. Generally the poorer countries have the highest fertility rates, and years ago when our great grandparents were poorer they had high fertility.
I think changing attitudes towards relationships, marriage, and sex is responsible, made worse by the fall of religion which usually encourages marriage having kids and discourage birth control etc.
@danielsinkinson4602
Absolute nonsense. We were having kids while living in caves fighting off cave lions and bears in pre-ice age Europe. Give yourself a shake, grow up, and take responsibility for your place in the world.

In Sub Saharan Africa, the fertility rate is above 4 children per woman (6.1 in Niger). Just replace people everywhere with migrants from Africa, what could go wrong? ♂
@vdimension6300
@DonTNguyen your argument is pretty flawed. You make it sound like 500 years ago it was a better time to have kids when 99% of the population lived in abject poverty .
If you live in a developed country, there has never been a better and safer time to have kids. But people want to go out for drinks, go to concerts, go on holidays, buy a bigger car. So no wonder no one wants to have kids
@DonTNguyen
@vdimension6300 no people had kids because they had to have kids. Having kids and caring for kids are 2 different things. Many people had kids and many didnt give them the best care.

And if the meantime there are lots of families all over the world who would love a safer place to live. Why not just give them the place to live and then there will be children able to pay the taxes and do the work that needs to be done in 20 years?
@Jaaj2009
@theant9821 So what you are saying is that people have become more responsible and don't want to struggle themselves and don't want to have kids that they can't afford to feed, nature enough. Its undisputable that cost of living relative to earnings (especially housing) is far worse than it was 50 years ago. Women are not focusing on work because they want to be more independent, it's because its become a necessity to have a reasonable standard of living.
@hmq9052

You're probably living a very poor quality life, in a very cheap area.
Rent alone for a 1 bedroom flat here is about £1000 a month. At £30k per year, you've got about £1900 per month. Somehow you'll need to pay £1000+ for mortgage / rent. Council tax is another £170. Internet for another £20. Water and Sewage another £40 a month. Gas/Electric is about £160 a month.
So that leaves you with £500 to feed 5 people, save money for emergency fund, transportation, clothes, mobile phones, the list goes on. Throw in a car for some.
£30K isn't enough. And 5 children is far too much.

@scarlettuwu9582
@wamnicho
“AI can’t replace consumer demand”
Don’t be absolutely certain of this,
Let’s say someone creates an AI factory manager to produce tires for vehicles, that Ai manager of the tire factory will still need to source raw rubber , steel and textiles from the other Ai producers who are harvesting/ mining those materials…
So here we have an example of basic supply & demand which would further expand itself out into the marketplace.
Another good example would be a recycling/ trash sorting AI as a producer of raw materials

the number doesn't matter its about the shape of the population pyramid / ratio of working to retired people. as the population grow older you need to tax the young/working population more, increasing financial burden, causing them to have even less kids. a negative feedback loop.

Great news since overpopulation is the biggest cause of global warming
THey are still having huge families in places that can least afford to feed and clothe them
Particularly sub-saharan Africa and India(which just happen to be some of the worst affected by global warming
Hence today's massive immigration, This effecively a baby boom(or adult boom ) in the target countries, which will result in a future demographic imbalance such as we have now. It is also leading to housing crises.
THIS IS NOT FIXABLE BY FINANCIAL MEANS!

The solution is to support young workers instead of the elderly. Our government tried to cut the winter fuel allowance for rich pensioners, and the public bit their head off.
We need to take funds away from giving the elderly everything they could dream of, and give it to the working population to support them having children.
-Maternity leave should be extended.
-Paternity leave needs to be significantly increased.
-Nursery should be fully funded.
-Free school meals for all children.
-Breakfast and afterschool clubs to support parents.
-Increase the child benefits cap to 3 children.
-Increase the child benefits to be inline with inflation from 2008.
There are so many things they could do, but they are 100% due to the government not supporting the working population.

I was thinking about this issue a few days ago. I suspect our economies were built up post-WWII under the assumption that populations would keep growing. Now that birth rates are declining, governments are concerned.
Either we're going to get more automation and AI to make up for less workers, or society as a whole will need to restructure itself to accommodate for smaller populations.

It's clearly because we young people can't afford kids anymore. The prices of housing all across the world have gone up while there has been nothing done to support job growth. Just endless wars and nonsense politics of bickering with each other. People can't afford to feed themselves, how can they afford kids? A co-worker of mine leaves her eight year old alone at home and constantly tracks his location, and keeps checking the camera at work because she can't afford to put her son in daycare. The cost to put him in daycare over the summer? $800 a month! A month. The future looks grim

If unaffordability was the primary reason young people in wealthy countries were choosing not to have children, then one would expect young people in the poorest countries, where everything is even more unaffordable, to have an even worst outlook on having children, with even lower birth and fertility rates than wealthy countries.
Instead, the opposite is true.
The truth, therefore, is that more and more young people in wealthy countries are refusing to have children because they simply don't want to have children. And this is so despite what they say in surveys.
Just accept the fact that a tectonic shift in cultural attitudes towards having children has occurred in the West over the last few generations.
Having children is now increasingly viewed as a financial liability and a severe hindrance against achieving one's personal individual goals (higher education, career, hanging out with friends, being on social media, travel, hobbies, etc.)
Young people in wealthy countries simply don't want the responsibility anymore that comes with marriage and raising a family.
In fact, even in Scandinavian countries where all the conveniences of modern life are available and social benefits and perks for having children are very generous, the fertility rate has been marooned below 2.0 for many decades.
The truth is clear to see despite what people say in surveys.
@gabriellef3351
Id add that less wealthy countries hace a correlation of less access to birth control/family planning. This might explain why they have larger families

Money isn't the issue, its opinion, instead of wanting 4 or 6 kids maximum usually 2 is now the maximum. And 2 is not enough.
Our attitudes towards relationships, sex, family etc. Have drastically altered.
Kids aren't taught to aspire to have a family, they're taught to feed the economy with qualifications. Family doesn't get a mention anymore.

You can’t have exponential population growth on a finite planet with finite resources.
It’s obviously better from an individual perspective to not have children when you’re already struggling yourself to pay your basic expenses,
While even if you’re ahead a bit it also makes sense to not have kids since this grants you more disposable income and less responsibility for taking care of an entire other human being (which is extremely expensive in our current economic systems) add onto that entire years of legal dedication which are required, children don’t really “leave the nest” until 18 to 24 years of age….
Add onto this the unpredictability of our current world with safety, violence in the U.S. being 1 prime example … but there’s also things like natural disasters, climate change, economic instability
There’s a lot of downsides obviously.
You have to very honestly be in a financial position of abundance to even responsibly consider having children.
While also having a supportive stable household in a good relationship with a capable partner.

@Jaaj2009
People who say its nothing to do with money are so massively misguided. We have gone from a time where a couple could have two kids and a house on one income, to a situation where a couple with a dual-income can't even afford a house. This has happened within a space of only 45 years or so. Work just doesn't pay enough relative to living costs and government subsidy is not going to fix the issue. This is NOT a commentary on how easy it was for the last generation, I'm sure it was hard for many of them too but you can't account for all of this with just changing attitudes. There are certain financial realities that have to be faced.

@richardloach610
As a father of 4 who is constantly told he is crazy for having had that many children, my response to some of this reporting is "nonsense!" People come up with excuses time and time again for not having children when they are in their prime 25-35 year child bearing age. The biggest is that people are not financially ready. But the truth deep down is that people these days are too damn self-centered and materialistic to contemplate giving up these comforts and self-obsession to have more than 1 or 2 kids, or even any. The wealthier people become the less kids they have, it's simple selfishness. It's not surprising though, it's a vicious circle, people have 1 or 2 kids and those kids are brought up to be that way. The very thought of essentially sacrificing your own selfish desires and obsessions to have less things and take after a large family just becomes an insane thing in these people's minds

@X_Otman nothing to do with money, its about attitudes towards relationships and children. We nolonger see marriage as important, nolonger see sex as important, nolonger see children as necessary.
When the reality hasn't changed, everything that was necessary is still necessary but we've told generations that its not necessary. Now we're paying the price.
Most of the women who have 3 or more children are married.
But kids are taught to be cogs in the economic machine not to be husbands wives mothers and fathers. The stuff that actually matters.

Extra population in 3rd-world countries is making developed economies rich. Ex-soviet states and North Korea did not contribute to population problem that currently exists. The EU and NATO states are mostly ex-Soviet satellites including eastern Germany. That's why there is not so many people in Europe. Egypt, Turkey and Iran are full of kids but they aren't developing properly, they end up with mental and physical developmental delays. These undeveloped kids end up making developed economies even richer. America is also full of developmental delays, kids take protein powders and get bigger but their brains aren't developing proportionally.

Asking people why they don't want children will get you the answer people think is the reason. But I have a feeling it is more complicated then just money. Otherwise the richest nations with high social supports with have higher birth rates then poor nations with low incomes. Even poor nations with access to birth control.

I guess if we had a global world order and removed barriers to live in other countries we wouldn't have problems like aging populations that need younger workers in a particular country. We could quickly move younger people to working areas and move elderly to less working areas to retire. Much easier with a global world order where everything is united. Otherwise people stay in the country they live in and wonder why there aren't younger people to take care of them, while in other countries there are too many younger people for the jobs available who couldn't easily move to another country. Supply and demand can't work efficiently when you have strict border control and nationalism/individual nations or judge people on where they came from, instead of recognising that we are all just human beings. If we had a unified global order and language, it could help to unify all nations and allow free movement around the world to fit the situational needs of people. But we can only achieve this with AI in control, not humans. Hopefully a peaceful war free future ran by AI is upon us with no borders.

It would be wrong to think of reproduction as more than a coincidence, thus reproduction is never a solution. Conversely, redistribution on the basis of age may be the cure for older majorities who struggle to maintain a high standard of living. Such countries could consider offering incentives for younger adults to emigrate from their own developing countries to such developed countries in need. In such a case, I could think of a few European countries who might consider inviting a relatively youthful American, or two.

Trying to have this conversation without acknowledging the reality that education and workforce opportunities has lead to more women preferring careers over child bearing is a mistake. This isn’t to say women shouldn’t be allowed the same opportunities as men, but the side effect of low fertility rates can’t be ignored. Neither can the effects of sedentary lifestyle on male testosterone levels. All of this exacerbated by rising cost of living, not the other way around.
