Honestly, it would be enough of a gut punch just to charge actual market rates for the oil we do sell south.  If the Canadian government wanted to make an impression, they would just have to inform the American importers that any new supply contracts would be priced at international market rates.  No more Canadian discounts.

I have a small, family run, Canadian business that has traditionally exported most of our products to the US.  We are working to diversify our customer base. In the meantime, we have cancelled our cross country trip through the US and are spending our travel dollars in Canada instead.  If we all work on this together we will be just fine!

NY here.  Great job explaining the current state of affairs.  Warren Buffett said it best- you can’t make a good deal with a bad person.  Amen to that.  Stay strong, but most importantly, stay together Canada.  USA is an example of what happens when you don’t stay together as a community.  Ideas, minds and opinions can change.  Your character is who you are.  He is a terrible human who is rotting from the inside out.

We cannot cut all ties. But we can reduce all trade to just the basics. Just the necessities for both countries. But it has to be clear, concise and extremely strict. The US is untrustworthy, and it's in our best interest to always keep that in the forefront. No longer trustworthy at all and never to be trusted again. Fool me once, pfft. All of this is changing the landscape, long game and it's permanent. It's a major shift, an actual uncoupling and it can't be half-assed. Stay focused. Stay strong.

Our law enforcement already shares plenty of information. To the point where U.S. border guards can actually pull up past charges or convictions on Canadians that are many decades old and have been pardoned and expunged and they will use that information to make people as uncomfortable as possible. This is nothing new either. It has always existed on their end but became much worse after 9/11. As for our side of the border, we have, for years been undermanned and understaffed and most Americans can answer a couple of nothing questions and just drive through. Rarely do our guards actually search most Americans coming in. Anybody with a half an ounce of smarts and common sense know the BS from Trump, Patel and the others is nonsense but this is what these people do to brainwash their own people. The U.S. has always been a nation built on lies and propaganda to feed the wealthy class and Canada has for too long. tried to emulate the U.S. model to our own detriment.

As for the trade war, their is no winning, no matter what happens. We have to stop thinking in terms of winning and losing. That is the mindset of Trump. Trade is never a zero sum game. What we need to continue to do is work toward diversification of our trade so one country going off the rails like this doesn't create this situation again. Or at the very least, when some fool like Trump comes along, the impact isn't as bad.

Another thing that is going to make a difference is that Carney has said that any new building whether roads, bridges or houses will be using Canadian products like steel, wood etc instead of importing it. Even Ford has said that they are going to start making I-beams instead of exporting the steel to the US and then importing the steel I-beams from the US.

What is the reason why it's not the job of the US border patrol to stop the Fentanyl?  Yes we should do all we can to stop it, but it's not Canada border patrol we talk to when we go to the US.  It's the US border patrol.  So they are the ones that should be stopping the Fentanyl because they are the first line of defense.

We have been built strong and we Canadians have always been able to figure things out and carry on. We are a country of so many intelligent people of all walks of life. We have exported many of these brilliant people. Stay the course Canada, travel in Canada and if you feel the need to spread your wings for a bit, travel across the pond and many of those on the other side of the pond are doing the same.  I have been trying to book some trips with in my Province and I can say this, it is busy out there, bookings are tight and that is awesome. Go Canada, we are not perfect and that is ok, we are still awesome.

Rather than tariff American items it makes ultimate sense to let Canadians make individual choice. We already are doing an awesome job of boycotting US goods. For Items that we each feel are essential we can continue to sextively buy. Maximally making USA hurt, but minimally harming individuals and companies in Canada.

If you see the frxworks for deals coming out of the USA, they all have tariffs, most higher than the current 10% Trump put on everything. They are going to shock their economy and cause a recession, no companies are going to want to invest and the entire world is going to look to other partners. It’s not sustainable for the USA, but it’s taught us an important lesson and now we need to work towards disengaging from the USA and diversifying. They will always be a large country on our southern border, they will always be an easy market to access but we need to stop prioritizing them and start prioritizing ourselves and other more worthy partners.

IF the US wanted to stop things from entering the US, they should fix the US border customs problems. Same with Canada. The guns and drugs entering Canada isn't a US problem. They come from the US and CROSS THE CANADIAN BORDER into Canada. Blaming the US for this problem is dumb. Blaming Canada for things entering the US is dumb.

We win because we know that trump will not be around forever. Frankly not much longer, in my opinion, as the Republican cracks are getting huge now. It is a long game we are playing. Don't get emotionally caught up and become hyper reactive to every little thing trump tweets about us. We may loose some battles in the short term but those will be reversed when trump is gone. Also don't forget there is an enormous number of people in the US that is ferociously anti-trump and are fighting to get him out. Be patient and stick together.

The tariff negotiations have been going on for too long now, and it has to stop. No fair deal is ever going to happen with the very mentally ill old man who only believes in them. Tariffs may be reduced in the long term only after people and big companies in the US suffer from them. Let's stop spending time and energy for a resolution that won't happen. Let's move on and spend our energy with sane countries and we canadians, we need to continue the boycott.

It is true we have to continue to trade with the USA , but as we do we need to build our country  and make new trading partners. Oh my, that's what we are going to do. Good job Canada,  we are all doing our job to facilitate this.  Our grassroots protest with all Canadians and the government strategies will take time but at least we have started.

I’ve been saying that about the borders for years to some of my USian friends. WE are responsible for what comes into our country at the borders and the US is responsible for what comes into their country at their borders. One guy actually told me, because Bush lied about the 9/11 terrorists coming from Canada, that we let them into his country. I told him that’s not how borders work. He then said our farmers are letting them cross their fields. Of course I said that means his are too if that’s the case. He hasn’t spoken to me since. Don’t miss him but I sure love telling people how gullible Republican voters are. The trust is gone and many will never visit the US again. We’re moving on and so is the rest of the world.
