That being said, I doubt they'd make anything like that because there's no point in not using explosives which have a jack of all trades use case unless they can make silent and efficient enough drones for quiet assassinations

You could, but the rotors would have to be significantly larger to lift that much weight. They'd be too big to fit in the hilt / guard so it wouldn't look very cool. Can't find weight specs for this one, but similar drones are usually around a third of a pound. A real sword is more like 2.5-4lbs.

It would be useless for actual combat but I assume that's not the point at all lol. The rotors themselves would do more damage to someone than the sword.

The one shown looks modified from a store bought version new chassis probably stronger motors with some upgraded electronics while keeping the control system, flight controller and software.

Not really. Metal is heavy plastic and foam are light. The current design is such that the C.G. is not centered between the blades. Or at least not without counterweights. Made out of metal it would be way off balance and the inertia would be a lot to overcome. The motor power will have to grow which will cause the weight increase. You will likely find yourself in a positive feedback loop till you get enough power and rotor diameter to generate enough lift and at that point it likely won't resemble a sword anymore.

They were just commenting on how the title is misleading, because it's not a sword. It's just a weird shaped drone, which is cool, but way less impressive. I'm not expecting it to fly through the air and cut things like an anime, but it'd be awesome if you could catch it and actually slice.

I wouldn't really say a toy. Definitely a prop. In the xianxia genre, flying swords are a major element in terms of weapons or even standing on one for travel. I can totally see a cosplay with someone wielding a flying weapon while doing martial arts poses. The gesture movement is very deliberate in the video using sword finger styled gestures.

Seems like this would have practical use on the battlefield for a soldier who can't really be using a controller. Imagine using hand gestures to activate and launch a drone towards an enemy, would be like a smart grenade.

Maybe it is the next step though. Right now it's a gesture controlled toy, but in 20 years, maybe there is a brain implant that gives the same control via neural signals to a more compact, razor-sharp flying device. If mankind has proven anything its that they can accomplish basically any concept with the proper resources and time.
