How Florida Quietly Became A Solar Powerhouse

Solar energy is booming across the U.S. and for the first time, Florida is catching up to solar powerhouses like Texas and California. Despite removing climate change from its official state policy in 2024, Florida added more utility-scale solar than California that year for the first time, with over 3 gigawatts of new capacity coming online. Unlike other states where rooftop panels drive adoption, Florida’s growth is led by utilities like Florida Power & Light, which built more than 70% of new solar last year. A state rule that speeds up approvals for mid-sized projects has helped fast-track development. And at the community level, towns like Babcock Ranch are powered almost entirely by solar and are showing what’s possible with hurricane-resilient microgrids. But challenges are looming. Florida still gets most of its electricity from natural gas, and new federal policy is cutting solar tax credits earlier than expected. With rising demand for power and policy pushback, can Florida’s solar boom last? CNBC visited Babcock Ranch and spoke to experts to find out.

For a state like Florida, it could only help it even more by reducing the urban heat island effect if done correctly. I wish they along with CA would rewrite the tax code to give more credits/wright offs to put them over parking lots and buildings instead of cutting down trees and taking up lots of forested areas.
@lynnrumsey3296
Wouldn’t it be great if all suitable parking lots in Florida had solar panels built over them? Shopping malls, Walmarts, grocery stores, etc. In Pensacola I’ve seen this done at a community center and a few small ones other places. It would be great shade to protect vehicles and people from the radiating heat caused by pavement.
@The38alt
Instead of building solar on parking lots, roofs and much needed areas for heat cover, they cleared whole forest to place them in middle of nowhere.
Imagine the less heat everywhere if solar covered parking lots instead of destroying wildlife.

Kudos to this project we need less dependence on fossil fuels
@KenDotCom
Florida voted republican and against solar panel subsidies and for more oil pollution. 2nd most sunshine and they don't have any state level subsidies for solar
@simonpannett8810
Just need Oil & Gas to lose its subsidies to encourage more renewables at the same time saving Government Money!!
@sbl17jackson37
Babcock Ranch said they don't like rooftop solar because of the aesthetics. I think solar on the rooftops of homes and buildings is better because less land is required then taking huge areas of Florida for solar farms.

@degnarius
Yes, Florida utilities have been pushing solar friendly development policies for themselves while actively fighting against residential solar for homeowners. They’re all for protecting their monopoly.

Florida surprises me once in a while. Some of the surprises include things like EVs and solar ownerships. Maybe all of the brains were not washed.

I am actually due for a new roof and I live near Fort Lauderdale. I was hoping to get a Tesla solar roof, which would solve both issues of a new roof and wanting solar panels however, with the new bill erasing the tax credit this is now financially not possible. On top of that a lot of homeowners insurance companies don’t want to insure solar roofs or panels, which makes adopting solar much more difficult. Especially in a state like Florida, where a lot of homeowner insurance companies are exiting due to all the storms this only acts as a deterrent.
@nighle160
Power companies make it harder for homeowners to install solar on their roofs, so they still have to depend on power companies.
@felixvelo
Use the space you place the solar panels more effectively. C'mon guys!

We must reward the fossil fuel industry for such large donations to the GOP.
Clean air and water is over-rated.

King Don cut solar tax incentives but kept fossil fuel incentives. What a troglodyte.

What America really needs to look at is Agrivoltaics where the Solar power generation and agriculture is done concurrently on the same land. it has shown to improve both the efficiency of the solar power generation and also the yield of certain crops grown on the land. Also the farmers earn from the solar power generation on top of the crop yield. and the shade from the panels effectively changes the conditions of the humidity, sunlight that can be designed to benefit higher value crops.
@atanacioluna292
Why don't they put the panels up higher so the land can be used for agriculture or nature?
@risamaeve
We wanted to get solar this year but our roof is the exact awkward age where it doesn't make sense to get a new roof yet but it also doesn't make sense to put panels that will last 20 years on a roof that has less than 10 years left in it.

150MW is amazing. That's over 200,000 HP in American numbers
@imacuser101
We should try to really promote rooftop solar, especially if the utility scale is not able to power data centers. If we're only reliant on utility scale, we'll see prices surge due to AI companies being able to pay prices that consumers cannot. So we really should promote rooftop solar as an alternative, not because of climate policy, but just as a way to produce watts and power.

But picking the right sites are very important for the board installations skills sets double checking.

3% of Floridians supported this bill to allow revision of net metering. 3%. Yet the Florida House and Senate overwhelmingly passed this bill. This bill was lobbied for and backed by power generation companies. These companies literally stuffed the pockets of those voting in favor of the bill. Regardless if it was going to absolutely 100% without a doubt no question about it going to negatively impact the citizens of Florida. They voted against the interest of the citizens they are supposed to "represent" because the power generation companies paid them to vote in favor of these multi-billion dollar corporations. Any Florida citizen should be looking to see if any representative in their districts voted in favor of this bill, and vote these people out of office either in primaries or general elections. It really is just that simple. You voted FOR them and they voted AGAINST you.
@xeridea
70% of the cost of rooftop solar is installers overcharging, and pointless permitting. Then they sign homeowners up for horrendous terms on a loan, so the final cost ends up being 5x the actual equipment cost. Just do it yourself and save a massive amount of cash, and have a very quick payback. I am fine with getting rid of the tax credit because it was just abused by investors lending, and solar companies.
Panels are extremely cheap these days, some just make fences out of them because that is a similar cost as building a fence.
@TQQQ333
Same as the water pipes workers and skilled teams they all got out of expectations protections and income levels.

Solar now less expensive than natural gas for generating electricity. If the US continues building fossil fuel plants, ignoring a less expensive technology manufacturing cost go up in the US.

Holy smokes CNBC loves Babcock ranch, the keep publishing on hurricane resiliency now it's solar.
@RollinHomies
of course the orange man kills the incentives. So, now, where do those credits go?
@imacuser1
The best thing, like always, is not to just build a product and hope that the government subsidizes it, but just build the best product. The cheapest product. And solar provides that. Solar is cheap, and it's the fastest way you can go from zero to actually powering communities and getting legit power to consumers. Climate policy has nothing to do with this. If you build the best product, it'll work every time.
@antronx7
Solar with subsidies is on par with existing natural gas at $35/MWh. When you have to add batteries the cost of solar energy increases. So no, more solar beyond what the grid can absorb without batteries will not make energy cheaper.
@TrevorBrass
Solar PV is now the default, not the niche form of new energy. One day most of our power will be from solar PV. Perhaps nuclear fission has a place for areas with less direct sun and as a backup baseload source of power.
@enthused7591
Makes zero sense to have 10 square miles of cut down forest to put solar panels for every neighborhood, when a couple thousand dollars in solar panels can just be placed either on the roof of your house or shed, or in your side yard and generate all the power you'd ever need right on site. The smartest way is always to put them on the roof of something like a building or carport so that not only can you still use the space below them, but they provide shade from the 100-degree heat as well. The future of energy is absolutely solar panels on site at people's homes, there's literally no other way to do it. We have existing structures to mount them on so that they take up zero additional effective space.
@llN3M3515ll
F* FPL and raising their hookup charge from 25 to 30 a month. I am kicking around just going off grid, rather have batteries then pay these guys 30 a month

What about the insurance companies that dropped customers for putting solar panels on their roof?

Would be good to define what a “Microgrid” is and specify what (and how much) the costs actually are.
@LilInsomniaa
solar is a scam, bought $50k of solar panels for my 2600sqft home, I only get $30-40 off my $400 energy bill each month, its a scam.

All homes, buildings, canals, roadways, and parking lots should have solar power.

Solar should not need taxpayer subsidies to be viable. I may have missed it, but I did not hear the household cost for power. Is it lower than, equal to, or more than being on the grid?

Sadly, as long as Trump an retrobates like him are voted into policy marking positions, efforts toward sustainable energy programs will lag. Voters must be better educated because as Trump was quoted saying, "I love the poorly educated."

Taking all those acres out of agriculture production is disgusting. Healthy food is already more expensive than it should be, but to take that much land out of production exacerbates the problem. Not to mention that the federal gov gives subsidies to make this switch. It is not benefit the homeowners only the utilities. Its a lose lose for the citizens.
@LordKingTrump
solar takes too much space
@MeatWig00
We should build most living quarters, underground. Make that the norm. Wouldn’t that leave so much more space for clean energy infrastructure. This solar stuff takes up too much acreage. It’s a land grab.
