Texas is free!

Texas lawmakers are already taking action by having the 10 Commandments posted in every classroom. It's the only real solution.

Exactly, more supply side Jesus for the children!

Reminder that Texas revolted against Mexico to keep black people as slaves then revolt against USA for the same reason.
And that's not even dwelling in all the civil rights movement era.
Why are anyone surprised when they behave abhorrently?

Oklahoma's panhandle exists because Texas needed to give it up to keep slavery.

Don't worry they're making sure that the racist gerrymandering goes on today aswell

Quick question, where are you from? I wanna see what's happened there over the last 150 years and judge you just on the bad things. Go on, which state/country?

Kinda hard to be worse than “got into two wars to keep black people as literal slaves” tbh

Lol no it's not. Not even in the slightest.
I mean, if you had a shit education about world history then yeah, I imagine that could be the worst thing you can think of. But guess what, your ignorance of history doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
Go on. You have the whole of the internet to look through. See if you can find something worse than that. Shouldn't take very long.

Every day I wish just once their little temper tantrum of breaking from the US would come true.
Watch them realize real fucking quick how they are a failed state and can only boast about "their achievements" with the full force of the US backing their sad, Christofascist state.
They have no economy without the dollar. They have no exports or trade without the US. They have nothing. States only succeed when working together. And for Red States, only because Blue States prop them up. And even then, they are abject failures anyway.

463 million gallons of water over two years.
Over that same time, 31.29 million residents of Texas used about 388.3 billion gallons of water showering. Or in other words, enough water for the data centers to run for 1,677.4 years.
I'm not making any value judgement one way or the other for AI water use, I'm just providing mathematical context for the conversation.

Profile Badge for the Achievement Top 1% Commenter Top 1% Commenter It's not just the water. It's the power they use as well. I'm all for shorter showers regardless but at some point we have to decide if life is for people or not. And, by the way, I don't know why we're not using those billions of shower waste water to cool the data centers. It's not like they need fresh water for it.
gamwizrd1
Sure, there's plenty of context to add to both situations. Water, power, and land consumption for data centers, balanced against benefit to society. Showers, lawn maintenance, water parks, many many things to consider for direct human consumption of water. I'm not informed enough on either issue to make a value judgement, although I will say just based on the magnitude of scale of difference between shower water use and data center water use, I would guess that the two subjects are unrelated to each other. Mainly, I wanted to provide context for a highly sensationalized article title. It's entirely possible that the intent of the article - to lobby for reduction of data center use for either the sake of water conservation or some other cause - is valid and good. BUT, the title is sensational.

Wait, I thought Trump was going to fix the shower thing? We were all going to be blasted by great water pressure? No?

Stop pricing water for industrial uses the same as water subsidized for drinking
Just tax it. It would be such a popular bill. The ads write themselves.
Only by increasing the price, it might make sense for these data centers to invest in reusing some of the water for cooling rather than just evaporating it away.

You might have missed the point they dont want to tax businesses
dogfaced_pony_soulja
Especially in Texas. Greg Abbott would never stand for that.

I think you’re unaware the only reason these businesses are in Texas is for the exact reason that they can do this. If laws were passed the businesses would relocate to a different state。
MaNewt
Then they pay a lot to relocate, and we fight in the next state. If a company had zero moving costs, sure, but the fact that California still has so many data centers and company headquarters despite high taxes shows that you can tax the golden goose a little. Just a small surcharge per acre ft of water for industrial could change the math to where they’ll probably invest in more water efficient cooling systems instead of not bothering because it will never pay for itself. But not enough where moving makes sense.
ToMorrowsEnd
This. Republicans like to make it sound like a company will just abandon a multi billion dollar facility and pay 100 million to move just to spite a politician.
Just like "the rich will leave the country if we tax them" no they wont.
