My American neighbour saw a doctor, was immediately given blue liquid and told to return in 48 hours for a colonoscopy. He was fine, but it made us realise our country's (mines New Zealand) have 3rd world health systems. BTW it cost $300.

This applies to some drugs not all. There other programs for seniors with low income where you don't have to pay the annual deductible or pay a reduced co-payment. Cancer drugs coverage varies by province and territory. Generally, drugs you take or administered in the hospital are free. In Canada, people who have a job pays a little through income tax to fund the healthcare so everyone can have free healthcare. If you are retired or don't have a job, then you don't pay income tax but you still get free healthcare.
