A squadron of F-22 with the best American pilots vs a squadron of J-20 with the best Chinese pilots, over the South China sea? Who wins?

The American F-22 vs. Chinese J-20 is not even a close fight.
The F-22 is the undisputed apex predator of the skies. The J-20 is a knockoff made in China. It's up to the pilot's skill. American pilots get tons of flight time, training, and all that, while the Chinese conserve fuel and watch Top Gun movies back at base.

In 2024? The J-20. Oh sure the F-22 is a formidable machine.
But over the F-22 it loses pretty much EVERY single advantage.
On top of this. In 2024 USAF pilots actually have less flight hours than Chinese or Russian pilots. USAF pilots get 8–10 hours of flight a month. Chinese pilots get about 170 a year, Russian pilots get about 150+ actual combat missions flown now.
Westerners are under the impression a stealth aircraft can literally turn completely invisible to radar and be undetected, hence why they regularly talk about how a B21 can bomb Beijing with impunity.
The F-22 has to take off from the ground—There’s literally very few places it can take off from. So we know where they will come from.
We have massive multi band radar on the ground to locate the F-22s.
We have satellite surveillance of the entire area and have demonstrated tracking F-22s visually from satellites.
It’s over water meaning there’s literally nowhere to hide or terrain that can be used for defence.
As such the J-20 can just sit back and lob PL-17s at the F-22s. As above we have plenty of ground based radars from multiple directions using different bandwidths. J-20 has 4 of them. They could literally take off, lob missiles, land, rearm, lob some more, land, re-arm and lob some more. Cowardly? This is literally a USAF technique I remember a fighter pilot talk about on here. TBJF - Turn and burn Jet fuel. Loose some 2 AMRAAMS per target. Then turn around rinse and repeat.

The Raptors will fly from Philippines and South Korea and Aircraft Carriers
The first interception will be with the JH-7
Then the HQ9 will launch missiles towards the Raptors
This will be the second line
Finally the S-400 will get a lock and go after the Raptors
The Raptor will never face off against a J-20 in the South China sea
Not unless it's a Top Gun movie
In fact using the Raptor against China is stupid in the first place
Both the Raptor and the J-20 are primarily meant to destroy ground targets
This means they aren't built for air to air combat
They aren't that maneuverable
When will the J-20 and Raptor face off?
Somewhere in the middle of the Ocean where China and US have Aircraft Carriers and the planes fly off from ACCs and fight with each other
Say hypothetically China sends a Naval Carrier Fleet to Australia and US intercepts the same
Otherwise the Raptor will face off against the JH-7 & HQ-9 & S-400
Likewise the J-20 if it flies against Taiwan will likely face the A-IDF Taiwanese fighters & F-16Vs
Not the Raptors or even the F-35s
而非F‑22或F‑35。
Military Aircraft: A Passion for Flight
Anything could happen but my money is on the F-22 squadron. I think the F-22’s superior stealth, engines, and radar give it a big advantage over the J-20 and the F-22 also carries more A2A missiles. The F-22 was meant for air-superiority, the J-20 is an interceptor so it’s not a favorable matchup. The J-20 is meant to chase down AWACS, Tankers, Transports, those high value targets.
Probably the biggest advantage for the F-22 is the Americans have been operating stealth aircraft decades longer than China has. The former not only has significantly more experience operating stealth, but tracking and engaging stealth as well. The F-22 just has many things going for it and that’s not including the new helmets and missiles it’s received.
I think this is how an F-22 vs J-20 would go

Wow, really trying to stoke the controversy aren't you? The real answer is, no one wins, because they don't fight. The US and China both have nuclear weapons and the capability to deliver those weapons to the other country. Both countries will instruct their pilots to avoid a conflict.
However, if you must have the rah-rah war and bloodshed answer, then the Americans probably win. The F-22 is significantly stealthier than the J-20, it likely has a significantly better radar, and significantly better avionics. American pilots are also probably more experienced and more well trained than their Chinese counterparts. Additionally, the J-20 doesn't really appear designed for the air superiority mission. It appears to be designed as more of a long-range sniper, meant to take out support aircraft like AWACs and tankers, not mix it up in air combat with other fighters. All that adds up to an American advantage that would likely win them any hypothetical fight.

OP: A squadron of F-22 with the best American pilots vs a squadron of J-20 with the best Chinese pilots, over the South China sea? Who wins?
The US.
美国。
The biggest disadvantage China faces is that the J-20 are ground-based and are not yet ready to be deployed on aircraft carriers, and we don’t yet know if J-20 can be launched repeated from aircraft carriers, even with China’s unreliable electro-mag launcher. This is the reason why the F-22 isn’t carrier based. Its airfrx and coating may not survive repeated catapult launch. Combined with PLAF’s lack of experience with mid-air refueling J20. it means a limited range for J2- and a predictable RTB path pre and post combat. Predictability is how you get killed.
The second biggest disadvantage China faces is the lack of an integrated sensor net. If the engagement is close to China’s shoreline, there is a higher chance the F-22 would be without its normal combat support assets, like the AWAC, but it also means the J-20’s will also be more visible to the F-22. It’s a matter of energy, the J-20 is less stealthy than the F22, so even as J-20 might have a sensor advantage over the F-22 the closer the combat is over China, it also means the J-20 will reflect greater radar energy for the F-22 to pick up.
Doctrinally, US would not fight an squad on squad battle. AWAC would have alxed the fighter wing and the US airfrxs would have launched BVR and let the networked sensor and radar system guide the missiles into the basket. US fights systematic war, has been, ever since the first Gulf war, it’s just too bad they don’t have any worthy enemies.

There are likely 10 times as many F-35s as F-22s in South Korea, Japan, and on the oceans on US CATOBAR supercarriers and smaller attack carriers from the US and Japan.
F-22s might play a small part in a war near the Chinese coast. The US would depend on launching missiles from land bases, submarines, carrier battle groups, miscellaneous destroyers, B-52s, B-1Bs, soon to be B-21s, and B-2s.
Some Japanese, US, South Korean, and Taiwanese fighters might also launch missiles at Chinese boats and islands in the South China Sea or close targets like those a hundred miles from Taiwan. Other countries like Australia might join the fight.
The more time that goes by, the larger number of F-35s and B-21s will become available. F-22s would be better used to defend Alaska, Hawaii, Guam, and some of the West Coast of the US.
If China starts bombing US or US allies’ bases in a big way, it would be an invitation to nuclear war. It is clearly better that neither side starts this war.
