Nearly 60 Labour MPs have demanded the UK immediately recognises Palestine as a state, after Israel’s defence minister announced plans to force all residents of Gaza into a camp on the ruins of Rafah.
The MPs, who include centrist and leftwing backbenchers, sent a letter to David Lammy on Thursday warning they believed Gaza was being ethnically cleansed.
They are urging the foreign secretary to take immediate steps to prevent the Israeli government from carrying out its Rafah plan, and to go further and recognise Palestinian statehood immediately.
The letter was sent just after the French president, Emmanuel Macron, made a similar plea at a joint press conference with Keir Starmer, the UK prime minister.
The MPs wrote: “It is with great urgency and concern that we are writing to you regarding the Israeli defence minister’s announcement on Monday of his plans to forcibly transfer all Palestinian civilians in Gaza to a camp in the ruined city of Rafah without allowing them to leave.”
They added: “The defence minister’s plans have been described by a leading Israeli human rights lawyer, Michael Sfard, as ‘an operational plan for crimes against humanity. It’s about population transfer to the southern tip of Gaza in preparation for deportation outside the strip.’
“Though an accurate descxtion, we believe there is a clearer one. The ethnic cleansing of Gaza.”
The letter calls for ministers to take five different measures. The government is already pursuing some of those, such as providing funding for the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, Unrwa, and working to secure the release of hostages held by Hamas.
Others, however, are likely to prove more controversial, including imposing a trade blockade on Israeli settlements in the West Bank and immediate recognition of Palestinian statehood.
“By not recognising [Palestine] as a state, we undermine our own policy of a two-state solution and set an expectation that the status quo can continue and see the effective erasure and annexation of Palestinian territory,” the MPs warned.
Ministers plan to recognise Palestine as part of a peace process, but only in conjunction with other western countries and “at the point of maximum impact” – without saying what that is.
A foreign office spokesperson said: “We are committed to recognising a Palestinian state and to doing so when [it] will have most impact in support of a peace process.”
Several European countries have already granted recognition, while France, which has not yet done so, has recently been putting pressure on Britain and other allies to do so in tandem.
Speaking at the end of his three-day state visit to the UK this week, Macron said: “Calling today for a ceasefire in Gaza without any condition is telling the rest of the world that for us as Europeans, there is no double standard. As we are attached to human lives, as we are attached to territorial integrity, we want the ceasefire, no discussion.”
He added: “Today, working together in order to recognise the state of Palestine and to initiate this political momentum is the only path to peace.”
The letter is the second time in recent weeks Labour MPs have written to ministers calling for them to recognise Palestine, but the first time they have been willing to make their names public. A previous letter also included the names of some parliamentary aides and junior ministers.
The letter was organised by Labour Friends of Palestine and the Middle East and signed by 59 MPs, including the group’s two chairs, Sarah Owen and Andrew Pakes. Other signatories include Liam Byrne, who chairs the business sext committee, and Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi, as well as the prominent backbenchers Stella Creasy, Clive Lewis, Diane Abbott and Dawn Butler.

I wonder if the MPs can explain where the borders of the Palestinian state will be, and how it proposes to live and prosper peacefully with its neighbors.

Is prospering peacefully with your neighbours even a requirement for statehood?

The 1967 borders are what are usually used as a reference point, especially with regards to international law and the illegal settlements in the West Bank.

The 1967 borders are only relevant to parties irrelevant to the conflict, and to the extent that they represent the situation on the ground. Notably, Jerusalem is incorporated as Israel proper now, and is not going to be ceded as part of any negotiation.

The UK is a party outside of the conflict. So that would mean recognising the 1967 borders works out fine.
Notably, Jerusalem is incorporated as Israel proper now, and is not going to be ceded as part of any negotiation
We still recognise Crimea as being Ukrainian territory.
tysonmaniacLondon
I agree that we recognise Crimea as being Ukrainian. That is slightly different, in that the sovereign country of Ukraine at one point controlled crimea, while east Jerusalem was ottoman then British then meant to be neutral then Jordanian then Israeli.
Crimea is not really part of Russia proper. A tourist would never visit, it is hard to access services, it is very much similar in status to e.g. west bank settlements. East Jerusalem is just israel. If you go on holiday to Israel you will visit it and feel safe there. With Crimea, we support Ukraine retaking it if possible. It is controlled by Russia, and in particular is going to remain Russian short of a very different war. Doesn't mean it can't be brought up in negotiations, but it's status is a matter for Ukraine and Russia, not for us.

This won't happen, because there's no defined state boundaries, no state capital, no government (that isn't a recognised terrorist organisation). How do you recognise a non-defined state? Especially when some define it's area to include the State of Israel.
Historically, Syria Palaestina was a Roman province, the boundaries extended beyond the British Mandate of Palestine into modern day Jordan (previously known as Transjordan).
None of this will help the plight of the Palestinian Arabs in Gaza and the West Bank.
denyer-no1-fan
Plenty of states don't have defined boundaries or contested boundaries - Ukraine, Russia, North/South Korea, China, India, the list goes on. By definition Israel doesn't have a defined boundary too.
Palestine's state capital is East Jerusalem, their government is run by Palestine Authority.

With a stalling economy, house prices rising, water companies failing, elcrotcity prices crippling. What should we focus on, yes the politics of the middle east

I think it's possible for MPs to manage multiple concerns at once. It's not like this issue would take up so much Parliamentary time that it would hinder movement in other policy areas. In any case, the politics of the Middle East still affects the UK.

Have the concerns that have stopped us previously recognising the territory been addressed?. No.
Is this being done as an emotional reflex to an immensely complicated situation?. Yes.
Is that how a responsible government made up of functioning adults behaves?. Absolutely not.
wowitsreallymem
How do you talk about responsibility when a supposed ally of the UK is so out of control people are discussing war crimes and ethnic cleansing? Recognising a Palestinian state is not new and has been on the table many times, always vetoed, if that’s what it takes to start treating Palestinians as humans then that’s where it should start.
littlebiped
The majority of the planet recognises Palestine as a state just fine without hand wringing about ‘concerns’ which frankly is immaterial to the question of recognition, in so far having Britain ‘address’ them. If Israel plays ball and plays nice in the event of a Palestinian state, which they won’t, but that shouldn’t stop recognition.
Either way, the longer we uphold the status quo that we had a hand in starting the longer we will be on the wrong side of history
denyer-no1-fan
Have the concerns that have stopped us previously recognising the territory been addressed?. No.
That's not an accurate depiction. We don't recognise Palestine because we believe it is not conducive to the peace process. It is built on the belief that both sides will be willing to come to the table and negotiate, and recognition of Palestine can be used as a tool to pressure Palestine to the table. However, it's becoming clearer day after day that it is Israel who is not willing to negotiate, not Palestine, so given that the UK official policy is a two-state solution, the correct course of action is to recognise both states - Israel and Palestine.
Chalkun
However, it's becoming clearer day after day that it is Israel who is not willing to negotiate,
Is it though? The Palestinians have refused to negotiate since the issue began. Then they went too far with the October attacks, got fucked, and suddenly we are meant to blame Israel for the conflict
denyer-no1-fan
Look at this graph and tell me how Israel is blameless. They are the ones pushing the settlements deeper and deeper into Palestinian territories.
Chalkun
Maybe the Palestinians shouldve negotiated earlier then instead of waiting until they had blatantly already lost.
I dont agree with the settlements but it equally wasnt that reasonable to expect the Israelis to sit there with the same borders being attacked all the time waiting for what could easily be well over a century for their intractible enemies to finally offer peace. I agree with you that we probably past the point of peace, but whose fault is that? Clearly the palestinians. They went too far, killed too many, and invited an invasion they didnt have the capability to prevent. Well done them.

I’m all for recognizing Palestine as a country but do these people not realise that doing so presently would mean recognizing Hamas (a horrific terrorist organization) as their government? As much as Israel’s actions in the region have been undeniably abhorrent, this is not the solution.
It would almost be as bad as “recognizing” the Islamic State across Iraq and Syria as a country - meaning that you’re legitimizing ISIS in the eyes of the UK government. Terrible idea.
