Why is Germany's air quality so much worse than it's neighboring countries?

Wind usually comes from the west in Europe, so its obviously the French cigarette smoke.

There is also the Alps to the South, which probably funnels the dirty air into that part of Germany.
Some of the places with the worst air quality dont have super high pollution, but the terrain is shaped like a bowl, so pollution gets trapped.
Winds and topography play a massive role in air quality, but it's not something most people think about.

Spoken like someone from Bakersfield。

Considering the astonishing amount and level of ignorance of all the factual wrong explanations in the comments, this actually comes closest to reality.

Please save us from the dark abyss of ignorance and enlighten us with your unrivaled wisdom, facts and logic, oh great one.

Closing of nuclear, and powering up coal?

70 upvotes for a question that seems logical but simply wrong.
Forest fires and a heat bulb trapping winds are the answer. Germany normaly has some of the best air quality in Europe if the wind does not come from the east. There are the dirtiest coal plants (Eastern germany, Poland, Czechia).

Coal plants in Poland use pretty good filters. It's nothing compared to what it used to be. One of the biggest factors in cold season in Poland have been houses and idiots using thrash as a fuel.

As well as the usual industrial and transport sources, there are numerous forest fires in eastern and central Germany currently. Some of which have been burning for a couple of days already.

A few years ago the wildfires southeast of Portland Oregon USA were apocalyptic. We saw ash so prent for a second I mistook it for snow. (I noticed I could see my breath and for half a second I thought of Christmas. But then I remembered I was doing yard work in shorts. This was not snow.) A town about an hour south had a sky so red the landscape looked like a Martian movie scene.
I can definitely believe this is the result of wildfires.

I remember bushfires in Australia causing apocalyptic red skies in New Zealand - 2000km away across a sea

I was in the middle of all that. Everything was dark orange with haze straight out of a 90s 3D game. Months where it was hard to go outside.

I mean the latest Canadian wildfires had an effect on Europe a couple of weeks ago. It’s crazy.

Can you guys please stop your wildfires, it's getting hot over here in Europe.

Guess some forest raking is in order.

Not wildfire related, but snowing ash: I remember when the Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajökul exploded in 2010 and it snowed and rained ash for a while in intervals pending on the wind. It was a very odd, but also cool thing to expiernce, pretty far away from the source (Faroe Islands). visiticeland says: about 100.000 flights were canceled, but i mostly remember a disgusting snow-ash period and many people complaining about the ash making a spot on their cars paint.

The industrial and transport sources are irrelevant here. At the moment shown on the map, Germany was just at the peak of an extreme heat wave (the infamous heat dome weather condition) while a cold front had already reached France and the North Sea with rain and cooler and cleaner maritime air.

This and Germany is also littered with air quality sensors... At least compared to some of the neighbouring countries。

I have family that live near a steelworks in the UK. You'd be surprised how often the official measuring points would have crucial locations down, no support for various pollutants or would average PM2.5 over a week to obfuscate massive spikes during some days.
Germany are probably the only country measuring properly!
Ricordis
Yeah, it is this. Years ago we started to measure how the air quality affects the people living in cities and near the traffic. We placed measuring stations everywhere and the results were horrific.
We got worse results because we are the only ones who measure it in that detail and by knowing we suck we don't have to cheat on those. Otherwise we would not be able to become better.
