This EXACT same accident happened in exactly the same place in exactly the same manner 40 odd years ago. 1988, I believe. Lots of dead kids. Lots of prayers said. Recommendations were given to move the cabins away from the river and to install an early warning system further upstream. Unfortunately it seems that money was more important than lives and these were not implemented. If we fail to learn from history it is doomed to repeat itself...

Wow. BBC just gave the best reporting I’ve listened to all weekend in the US. The US can’t stop political posturing long enough to report the actual news.

Two things, 1) If it takes high casualties numbers to force local authorities to put in proper warning/management facilities, THAT is an indictment of Local Authorities. 2) If flooding, especially the risk of Flash Flooding is seasonal, then WHY HOLD SUMMER CAMPS DURING THE SEASON?? Surely the thing is to hold them either early in the Summer, or later towards the end of Summer when the flood season is over?
@terriv9002
1) The cost of the flood warning systems is much more than the small local governments can afford. Blame there falls squarely on the state and federal governments. 2) Summer camps are about the only time of year students are out of school. In Texas, we have a week at Thanksgiving and two weeks at Christmas which are family times. There is also a week off in March, but there just isn’t a time of year for week long camps to be held.
The area larger area in which’s these floods occur is called flash flood alley. It is also a beautiful wooded place that is very popular for vacationers to visit. Why have camps here? Why do people live along the Gulf of Mexico? I guess people are willing to risk the weather in exchange for the beautiful location.
@ljacobs357
My brother lives in Kerrville so I know the area well. Everyone in that area knows that river is prone to flash floods, and many of the camp retreats are located right on the river. The City has discussed a warning system but didn’t do it. Texas is a Republican state and they don’t focus on infrastructure, but they find a way to to fund building plenty of roads. Sad situation.
@zachhoward9099
I read the County where Kerrville is located voted the early warning system down because it’s $750k price tag was too high yet somehow found 8 million dollars to renovate the High Schools Football Stadium and Athletic Facilities. If that’s true which wouldn’t surprise me as football is almost a religion in Texas then that’s dispicable
@duchessofnaples
It's gross negligence and yes, it is political. Republicans do not care about citizens and infrastructure. They care about cutting regulations and saving money for corporations at the expense of the populace. They are absolutely culpable.

Don't make this political, not in a time of tragedy. Wait until the time of tragedy is over and people have forgotten so that way we can shrug our arms and just keep deregulating
@anna-y3s5p
In a developed country this is insane, you need to start believing in science America! Flood sirens and proper funding for NOAA
@williamlandis40
The US has the most prone to natural disasters out of any country try in the world, this is unfortunate but to blame the US and this event on not “believing in science” is utterly clueless and quite disgusting to the victims
@SeventhAnubis071
Kerrville was too cheap to install warning sirens. And don't count on Ted Cruz to draft a bill to make them national.

Flooding in this region of Texas has decreased in both frequency and magnitude over the past years.
@reamoinmcdonachadh9519
Even if the various Weather Departments had been fully staffed up, I seriously doubt a warning could have got out quick enough. Plus the fact so many resources were devoted to the Border, means that what response was available was going to be inadequate to the task.
Flash floods are called that for a reason!!

I’m from Texas and have known about this type of flooding with these rivers forever. It’s nothing new. It was unfortunate that the information wasn’t getting to the campers and others. It happened so early in the morning and the city didn’t have an elect system which is something that will be addressed.
@upnorth2421
I cannot understand why do you have these camps so close to the rivers, if flooding is something that has been known forever?
@RSCSBIB
There’s no phone service in that area, and most of rural Texas doesn’t have warning sirens.

@melaniebutler6440
The long droughts render the ground almost impossible to absorb heavy rains. It simply pools and builds up. Texas is a very MAGA state and Abbott and Patrick are horrible managers of the state. Those camps are often used to brain-wash those poor children into the whole MAGA Christian cult. I have family struggling with this flood and they recall the flood in 1987. Many more people and highways. It’s a camp that has been around since 1920. Many of us were severely hurt by these camps.
@KarlWomack
I feel so sorry for Texans but America is so inconsistent, they don't believe that Tornadoes, Hurricanes, Cyclones, Tsunamis, Floods, Fires, Avalanches, Earthquakes, Volcanic Eruptions aren't to do with climate change and global warming.
@terriv9002
Another factor that wasn’t mentioned. DOGE cuts impacted materials as well as staff. Local independent forecasters in Texas have said that the reduction in the number of weather balloons and the data they provide has made accurate predictions more difficult. As a Texan, I’ve noticed that in the past few months, the forecasts have been significantly off quite a few times. Florida meteorologists have already questioned if there will also be enough hurricane hunter airplanes to get accurate predictions.

@LiseR-cu4dv
It sounds to me like the people are going to have to work out their own warning/alarm/evacuation systems. Officials don't seem to want to spend the money. Like, in the camps having somebody awake during the night when it is known there is going to be heavy rainfall.
@Panchito_0
Something that blew my mind is that over 75% of people in Kerr county voted for Trump. Cuts to NOAA, NWS, and FEMA while Trump’s latest bill funded ICE to the tune of 170 billion. I seriously feel for the kids that died, they paid the ultimate price for Trump’s policies. Common sense tells us that water goes downhill and this area is prone to flooding (with recent flooding in 1987). What happens when leaders dismantle the institutions, technology and scientists who keep our communities safe???
@coralblue9966
As a person that lives in America i can tell you there is no political blame game. Warnings went out, people in charged ignored them.

Texas has the worst governor who seems to always show up after the fact with thoughts and prayers. When will Texans say enough?
@CherriDove
The governor and congress put too much money into depriving women of their right to an abortion, banning books, and putting religious paraphernalia in classrooms, when they should have spent money on flood prevention. The Guadalupe River has flooded several times
@AdmiringBabyPenguin-on6fd
They cause their own problems, floods, tornados, hurricanes are nothing new in the US, and why they are acting surprised is beyond me. They should spend money on building defences for these disasters, yet here they are decades later, still not advanced.
@oldtuberig
Use your heads when you locate these camps. Locating a camp near a river or stream prone to flash flooding is stupid. That's what a flash flood is. A FLASH FLOOD. Close these improperly located camps permanently!

It’s a terrible tragedy for the families - sincere condolences. As for the State of Texas, just as Texas politicians voted to deny federal aid to blue states battling natural catastrophes, so should Texas forego such aid. But, of course, they won’t - hypocrites of the highest order.

The saddest part of this is that the Trump admin has gotten us so divided that Texans root for fires to burn down California and Californians are happy when a preventable catastrophe happens in Texas or Florida we cheer. This has to STOP! We are all just Americans. We all want mostly the same things. Trump is a master at “Divide and conquer” that we all hate each other while him and his best friends $$$$ are laughing all the way to the bank. Let’s direct our joint hatred at the source of our current issues.
