Saying the Xpeng G6 is a clone of the Tesla Model Y is silly.
The G6 was released 2 years ago, way before the Model Y Juniper restyling. So if someone copied the styling, it was Tesla.

other than the linear headlights and rear lights (which I think is more of a design trend of the overall automotive market since the late 2010s), the body shape and proportions are undeniably similar to the Model Y which came out in 2019

It looks nothing like the Juniper, but a LOT like the original Model Y, so yes, definitely a clone.

Just because it was brought to market before the model Y does not not make it a clone. If that was the case then the it would be logical to say that the Tu-44 was the original and the concorde wasn't. Its a weak argument

Yeah they had no idea how right they were just for the wrong reason. People are buying Chinese cars not because they are cheap imitations of Western ICE cars but because China recognised the transition early and decided to get a head start on EVs

We here in the US will, sadly never see these Chinese cars because of the outrageous tariffs. I suspect they are better made than Tesla, and longer driving range.

As a Chinese, it is also hard for me to recognize all of them... The Skywell is rubbish and has died in China. Chery shouldn't get so many strange cars. But get back to the cars which serious developed like Smart, Zeeker, xiaomi and etc. , they are super competitive. The time and market will show the result.

the Chinese hv been making all european brands of cars for decades, even their car designers and design offices are domiciled in europe that is why u see a revolution in design.
china makes everything u use so wat makes u think the cars are low standard.
Also really want NIO to sell here. They do in Europe already so hopefully not too far away.

Absolutely true, these Chinese cars are no design language or unique design elements. They all look similar and lack distinctiveness.

German here, so far Geely definitely feels like one of the very best Chinese car brands.
Maybe BYD too, but they seem to always be less impressive in reality than what is promised

I just been to china a week before first time, its crazy 9 out of 10 car are brand new ev on the road, that too half of the Chinese ev i never saw Aion, Gag, begine... Whats crazier is that in around tousands of cars I have spotted there were more Tesla and Amg than Haval and BYD.

To be fair, Japanese cars from the 70s were rubbish.
In the 80s they were decent value for money, just a little more prone to rust.
In the 90s they became good.

british car journalists always have a foul mouth on none british cars without looking at themselves in the first place. Its soo annoying to hear them review an American Cars like their cars run on water . What i have observed The talking down is familiar with all their Car Journalists, not even attempting to hide their jealous .

To be fair, none of the above models are popular EV models in China. The best sold BYD models in China are Dynasty series, and other popular EV brands include NIO, xiaomi, Li Auto and XPeng, ZEEKR, lix&Co etc. Would love to see Top Gear review on BYD Han, Yangwang U8/U9, NIO ET5T/ET9, xiaomi SU7/YU7
说实话,楼上提到的那些车型,在中国都不是主流热销款。
比亚迪在中国卖得最好的是“王朝”系列,其他热门品牌还有蔚来、小米、理想、小鹏、极氪、领克等。
真希望《Top Gear》能试驾一下比亚迪汉、仰望 U8/U9、蔚来 ET5T/ET9、小米 SU7/YU7。

Because they all sell at a great loss in China, so if they go abroad, they risk of going bankrupt overnight.

Wonder why they’re not making right hand drive? It’ll cost them a lot more to make cars for new market when their core market (China, middle-east,mainland Europe) are not stable profitable yet. They have lost nearly 1 billion in 2025 Q1 alone. UK is getting those models which either are profitable in the first place or failed models that are given a second chance. Either way, hardly any fancy ones popular in China or elsewhere.

It's super depressing to watch. Not because of where they are from just the general style the world is turning to. We had saloons, estates, hatches, coupes not so long ago...and now everything looks like a mini 4x4...an suv style. Its dreadful. Bring back styling and not giant oversized hatch blocks.

it’s kind of the strategy or manufacturers are guided to be like this in EU market.
If you look into Chinese local EV market you will find there are a significant portion of cool cars with great feathers like the hatchback you mentioned and even scissor doors at bargain price.
I believe the huge cost for homologations to your market made Chinese manufacturers to focus more on most-sellable but less cool models.

Calling BYD Dolphin a 5/10 while giving Renault 5 a 9/10 is pure western bias. Renault has less power, less range, less tech; and its using more dangerous NCM battery as opposed to safer LFP battery the BYD uses.

The bias of western journalists of products of Chinese origin is that the Japanese products faced in the early 1970's and now those same products are some of the best and the most reliable in the world. These same journalists will soon be changing there tune in say 10 to 20 years time.

I am glad someone noticed this as well... calling any western car bar tesla 9/10 is laughable... the Chinese are at the top of the EV chain they make the best EVs period..

An honest advice from a Chinese subscriber: DO NOT GET THE SKYWELL!!! It's a dying brand n China, it sales so bad in the Chinese market due to strong competition here, it has to go somewhere else to make a living.
Another fact is, the Chinese still haven't bring there best products to the UK market yet, don't know why, maybe they need more time to test out their latest models?

The Korean and Malaysian carmakers had the same issues initially. These model names will genericize into westernized versions over the next few years, no doubt.

We’ve hardly seen most of these Chinese cars being sold in China. That’s funny. xiaomi, Nio, Li Auto, and BYD are the most popular Chinese brands. Regarding BYD, only a small number of low-end products have appeared in Britain. So, here is the problem: Where are the others?

Biggest issue with them is you don't know how long the company your buying from will be in business. Parts are a nightmare as it is. If the company goes bust in 5 years you are out of luck.

To be fair there are no truly British road car manufacturers left besides McLaren all the rest are owned by the other countries which means they aren't really British anymore

What I love most about the Chinese cars is how they don't nickle and dime you for options, very streamlined range and gorgeous interiors especially with lighter options, and the most advanced battery technology too.

they are a good value at their original Chinese prices which are half or even 1/3 of the prices in the UK. at prices closing in on the western cars i don’t see the appeal

China’s car industry is on a similar path to what happened in America in the early 1900’s when there were literally hundreds of car companies… within a couple decades they all eventually got boiled down to the Detroit 3.

It's funny, we've kicked out Huawei for apparently being a risk to the western tech market. But then we have a flurry of Chinese motor manufacturers entering the western market. Fun fact: geely build the Black cab while BYD builds British full electric buses.

Thats strange that Geely not bringing Zkeer to UK. Yet common in Scandinavia and is essentially the home of Volvo and Polestar. Also where is Nio? Huge brand in China and again common in Scandinavia and other parts of Europe. Not to mention xiaomi SU7. Superb car.

All those are low to mid tier brands in China.
Grab a xiaomi SU7 or YU7, they will blow your mind. Only thing can stop xiaomi car take over the world is tariff.

I went to china twice in the last 2 years, and I honestly hardly saw any cars in this video there. Some od them I didn’t even see at all. The BYD I saw there are mostly mid-sized sedan that looks a bit posher than the Seal. On my two trips there, I saw a total of one Seal. I saw the xiaomi SU7 too and I like it even though it doesn’t look quite as nice as the Taycan despite its design so blatantly being “inspired” by the taycan. I saw tons of Li Motor cars, and I like them. Simple, generic SUV design but really quite nice. I did see a lot of Xpeng too. So that makes me wonder, do Chinese automakers actually sell their best cars only in China and send the models they can’t easily sell there to other markets? Or is it because they wanna keep prices low in those other markets?

I watch the wheelsboy youtube channel and some of the premium cars in the Chinese market would absolutely compete with the very best that europe has to offer while massively undercutting in price. If they could be bothered developing right hand drive models of their flagships then ive no doubt it wouldnt be long before a nio or and xpeng was as common in the supermarket carpark as a bmw or Audi
