Scavenging for Survival on Asia’s Largest Trash Mountain

Just outside Jakarta lies one of the largest landfills in the world—Bantar Gebang. But this isn’t just a dump. It’s a living, breathing ecosystem powered by trash. In this episode, I climb the trash mountain, eat food scavenged from waste, visit a school built in the slums of the landfill, and explore how local industries burn garbage to fuel tofu and lime production. This is the dark reality of Southeast Asia’s hidden trash economy—where survival depends on what the rest of the world throws away.

Andrew, FYI, the Indonesian government provide very minimum facilities to separate the trash (organic, anorganic), and they do not enforce the trash separation. Either the government are ignorance, lazy, or both, that caused this apocalyptic system for years.

As an Indonesian, I feel deeply embarrassed by this. Ever since I was a child, my parents taught me to dispose of trash properly—in designated places, never carelessly. But the older I get, the more it feels like those lessons were in vain. People still throw garbage into rivers without a second thought. Even the government, which should be responsible for managing waste properly, seems to be contributing to the problem rather than solving it...

A landfill site in Leuwigajah exploded in 2005, killing 157 people. Trapped gas beneath mountains of trash was pushed down by heavy rain at 2 on Monday morning. Most deaths were due to being buried by trash following the explosion.

The fact that the guy still wanted to share his water with you so you didn’t get itchy or sick was such a nice thing to do. What a place. BTW, what natio are you? You kinda sound NZ? I’m Aussie, and couldn’t work out if you were or not
@ezurasan
Hi Andrew, I'm really glad you shared your experience in Bantar Gebang. I live and grow up in Bantar Gebang. When I was a kid, I even lived near that landfill. Back then, I used to fly kites and look for toys in the landfill. I even fell and got stuck in the sludge, just like you did! I had to throw away my pants and sandals because the smell wouldn’t go away, no matter how many times I washed them—haha! Really love the high quality content you produce, keep it up!

Indonesian here, thanks for the documentary. Hopefully many people will see this so the government take necessary action to solve trash problem in this country. If somehow someone would promise to solve this problem in their presidency campaign I will choose him in heartbeat.
@armorbearer9702
You convinced me that it is better to reduce rather than recycle. You are probably right that some of the trash is where companies get their recycled materials from(6:07). It looks like a lot of the trash is never recycled and is just slowly poisoning the local community.
@rarindraprakarsa4376
As someone from Jakarta, I’m also amazed (and a bit concerned) about how waste is managed here. Around 5,000 to 6,000 tons of garbage come in every single day, piling up to a massive 40-meter-high mountain — that’s like a 16-story building! There is a sorting process, and about 4,000 tons of it actually get used to help produce electricity and fertilizer. But the real problem is that the capacity is running out, and there are people living around or even inside the area, which is seriously dangerous for their health.
@Mega_vegeta
What they need is to build a trash burning power plant. I've seen examples where they have filters that stop the toxic smoke and they produce a ton of energy and the raw materials left over are used for other things as well , they even produce hot water.
@nidafauziah4760
I live in Jakarta we sometimes talk about this trash mountain is Bekasi. Govt pay the nearby residents to keep mouth close and don't complain about the smell, but maybe nobody knows that how those small food vendors at the top of trash mountains earns more than you can imagine...
And i really felt bad for the mother who doing all that for her daughter ❤.
I'm happy that i don't live there and I'm also sad what were doing instead of doing something about that trash
@noway4879
I traveled through Southeast Asia for half a year and the single use plastic industry there is on another level. You can see it in this video too, plastic cups, in plastic bags, with plastic wrappers etc. It’s so unsustainable…
@jasoncottier4910
This documentary is very good. I found it searching after watching another where they stole all this footage, dexed you and had a voice over for all your points. Glad I found your documentary. Have seen some before and they are always extremely well done!! Thanks
@GundamMate07
I lived in Bantar Gebang for 7 years and although I was in the outskirts and a well off place, the smell from the garbage dump still reached my house especially on Sunday mornings or after it rained.
I’ve recently moved to Liverpool and the difference was day and night, I used to get recurring headaches which is practically non-existent now and I’ve been in happier moods since

great documentary. makes me appreciate (once again) how good my life here in Germany is. Even the absolute worst job I could think of is still way better than being a trash collector there. Still it is always fascination to see how adaptive and inventive humans are when they are being forced to live and earn money in such an extreme environment.
@ReactionTherapyWithBiggClay
Been passing by this trash mountain in Mississippi ever since I was like age 5, I’m 33 now and let me tell you. It is so huge the bird at the top look so tiny the bulldozers look like toys. So I can’t even imagine how that mountain looked in person cuz it looks like a trash city lol

People that talking about green talking about clean earth they should come and the place like this see if they can do anything about it !! Thanks for showing this for us to see !
@choreo-graphic
I just google earth'd the area, and one side of the trash mountain is beginning to grow and grow grass and bushes. You have to look close to see the trash. Imagine in the future, people will be hiking trash mountain.

I was a medical missionary in 2011, and we treated the people who live and work in the Guatemala City Dump……life changing…there was a giant sink hole ️ like 30 feet across! And an open sewer that just ran throughout the alleyways they built their corrugated tin huts but they somehow had electricity and even TVs in some! Though seeing the little kids running around this gigantic dump, while I had kids the same age at home…

Your journalism is incredible capturing raw footages of the dirtiest places on earth and at the same time telling a beautiful story of human resilience. The next time I complain I had a bad at work, I will come to this video to remind myself that others have it worst.

South Bali landfill Suwung is fill and trash is building up everywhere as there is no replacement ready. The landfill was on methane fire for weeks last year spreading smoke over a large area, Trash is collected among residents and them basically dumped openly in temporary sorting places inside residential areas before taken away. A nightmare from a hygiene standpoint. Tourists are unaware of the waste problem which is clearly visible in local residence areas.
@thenasiudk1337
I live 4 KM east of Bantar Gebang, the smell of the trash can be smelled here in the morning as sometimes the wind blows out the smell to surrounding areas. The main road that leads to Bantar Gebang also smelled so bad because thousands of garbage trucks used this road everyday 24/7 delivering garbage from Bekasi and Jakarta. The traffic were horrible too because of these trucks.
@christianchandralim
I'm an Indonesian and I would not recommend any Westerners to have a meal in one of our shed-like food stalls (locally called 'warteg'). Your stomachs will not be able to handle the microplastics, frying oil used over 20x, sewer water, ice made out of sewer water, utensils wiped with cloth that was used to wipe 100 previous utensils, MSG, etc. It is that dirty.
@penitent2401
Those are some skilled excavator operators, getting around on a lose mountain of trash. They got a bulldozer to compact it but plastics bags, bottles and such don't compact easily and unpredictable, and they're operating it on the edges and slopes.
@darryllew
bantar gebang is the largest landfill in indonesia, located in bekasi, west java. it serves as the main waste disposal site for jakarta, accommodating thousands of tons of garbage daily. covering an area of approximately 110 hectares, it has been in operation since 1989 and has become a crucial part of jakarta's waste management system. the landfill is home to many scavengers who rely on collecting and selling recyclable materials for a living. despite the challenging environment, some efforts have been made to improve conditions, such as waste to energy projects and recycling initiatives
Bantar Gebang

Thank you for showing the world, this is real, with Vietnam too. You can see sufferings and a smile in their misery. The government and other humans need to help please. I try to help those in VN extreme poverty. Even with such misery these people are so helpful to you. Imagine the immense cancer causing conditions. Praying for everyone.

Just discovered your channel and I am amazed. As someone who travels extensively and studied social work this is a great form of documentary. You seem very knowledgeable and are very straightforward in your reporting. Nothing but the information and experiences. When I was younger I was lucky enough to be very involved in an NGO based in Guatemala City that worked with families that worked in the Guatemala City dump. It was a very similar scene, and i remember the smell vividly. I spent a year there and it was the most important time of my young life. This is reminding me that these garbage dumps exist all over the world and are a very similar experience with people living nearby, the economy of trash and more. Thank you for sharing this. you have a new fan! ps the luka doncic comment is great!
@4X4ish
I showed this documentary intro to a couple American co-worker who, more time than not, complain about their job. This was a slap in the face for how grateful we should be. They complain less now, or at least around me haha.

And we people in the western world think we have a tough life. The human spirit does what it needs to do to survive.
This is why manufacturing has gone overseas. All the things the west don't want to deal with such as the cheap labour, no regulations on working conditions, environment. Close our eyes and blame other countries for the pollution. Easy peasy.
