The Sneaky Ways Retail Credit Cards Are Bankrupting American Shoppers

Retail credit card debt is accounting for a greater proportion of overall debt in consumer bankruptcies in recent years. A big reason is the record high interest rates banks, including Synchrony and Bread Financial, are imposing on clients after the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau tried to cap credit card late fees at $8, down from $32, in March 2024.

I worked in the credit card business for a major bank for 35 years. During that time, I volunteered in the community to teach money management classes. I taught to university students, church groups, drug rehab groups and welfare-to-work groups. Across all groups, 99% of them didn’t care to learn or understand anything about managing money. Debt is a modern-day form of slavery. It limits your choices in life. Work to become debt-free.

LOL I wouldn't have to worry about credit card debt if I spent $1,200 in Macys and went into debt for it. My wife would just shoot me, no further worries

simple rule, use credit card like a debit card, meaning use credit card for all purchases, but pay full bill at the end of month

Honestly our government has no idea how people are suffering these days. I much feel sorry for the disabled people who don’t get the help they deserve

There’s a simple solution to not paying interest on credit cards.
Don’t spend any more than you can afford and set up auto pay to pay off the balance each month.
@bradhampton6457
The trick is not to carry a balance on these cards. Pay it in full every month. OR don’t get the card. Period.

I had a Kohls credit card which was recently taken over by Capital One. The interest rate and fees are incredible, but what made me cancel this card is the fact that these retail cards share user information including my social security number. I couldn’t opt out online, I had to call someone in a foreign country, wait on hold, and tell them I did not want any of my info shared, I couldn’t understand the representative’s thick accent and it was easier to just tell her to cancel my card. Not only do these credit card companies charge incredibly high interest and high fees, they also sell our information to who knows! Greedy!

No self control is bankrupting them

At what point do consumers have to be responsible for their own financial decisions? It’s so common to hear people say, I didn’t know about that. Well, why didn’t they do any research before they signed up for these cards? The Internet is flooded with information for making good credit card decisions, not to mention how to create a financial budget. Stupidity can no longer be an excuse for financial decisions that go bad. Particularly something so easy as a credit card.
@anthonypearson6759
We really need to stop blaming everyone but the customers. It’s really not so hard to wrap your head around “don’t buy things you don’t have money for”.
@iLuseMy1v1s
Pro Tip, don't spend the money you don't have. Be smart, use a credit card with an excellent points program. Use it for everything, pay it off every month... It's free money

Its easy to judge but I was in banking for years and a lot of credit card debt I saw was medical debt or emergency debt. Your kid ends up in the ER with a broken arm, and the only way they can pay for it is on credit card. AC unit goes out in the middle of July, and your family needs it to be safe and comfortable, it goes on a credit card. Your car breaks down and you need to go to work so you can pay your bills and feed your kids, it goes on a credit card. What I used to tell my clients is dont judge, break the cycle, save hard as you can for 6 months of emergency savings. TEACH your family good spending habits by LEARNING how to by getting help and accessing free resources.
@Bakapooru
I disagree with the closing line. These credit cards no NOT allow people to lead a decent life in this country. These cards give people the TEMPORARY belief of leading a decent life.
@phillyarchdad
These practices define predatory lending. In earlier time, banks would deny credit to these folks so grey market lenders filled that need. Big banks want all the business now and are the loan sharks of today.
@Delvy787
Get comfortable with delayed gratification so you can move at the speed of cash. Credit cards and these issuing companies are the worse.
@Marchalisaac1
Credit cards aren’t bankrupting people. People are spending money that they don’t have. Time to take responsibility for your own actions.

Man, I thought I knew the rules: work hard, hustle, save every cent. But I always felt stuck. Then someone casually mentioned Nixorus books in a comment somewhere, and I swear—it felt like accidentally stumbling onto forbidden knowledge. It made me question every single thing Id been taught about money, wealth, and success. Not gonna lie, I felt like I was cheating the system just by reading it.
@africocoalux722
Credit Card companies prey on shopoholics. Its a negative symbiotic relationship. It doesn't help that they pressure (with low reward) their employees to over sell these credit cards, almost to the point of harassment towards shoppers. The companies exploit their employees when enforcing credit card sign ups, and the pressure is trickled down from the top. I worked retail in the past, I know how the game works-- our supervisors would encourage us to stress its a "rewards card" and its always a measly 10% discount on the purchase. Its predatory practices all around, and consumers falls for it..
@fatjaysgarage
Your problem is confusing debt with wealth… having 20,000$ available balance doesn’t mean you can afford do drop 20,000$ on anything!
@jerrycurls88
Credit card debt is really a self control problem. If you use cc like a 30 day float and pay your bill in full on time, it's a great thing. You get points/rewards for using them. If you dont have self control, then get rid of them. It's just about being responsible. In my 20's, I ran into same issues as many young people do now. I learned about personal finance (that was never taught in school) and use things to my advantage. It's never too late to grow in this critical part of life.
@GNX157
My Amazon Chase card is 18.49%, and a $39 late fee. I don’t know how people allow themselves to do it. In my 60+ years of life I’ve never paid a penny of interest on a credit card debt. My personality will just not allow it. Mortgage, car loans, yes, but never credit card.
@Bbfishman
this is not a secret. everybody who puts money on a credit card tells themselves that they're going to pay it off before the interest kills them. but if that was actually the case, credit card companies wouldnt be making billions of dollars.
@FredFlintstone-m2n
Why would credit card companies want to bankrupt consumers, they won’t get their millions of dollars in interest payments.
@teng029
None of this is rocket science. The premise of credit cards has always been to cost you money. You either understand that going in, or you don’t. If you are part of the former, then you’ll be fine using credit cards. If you’re part of the latter, then you’re screwed. In the end, having a credit card is a personal choice. It’s also a personal choice to educate yourself on the realities of having one.
@saffrons12
I am not buying anything these days: Pay bills, groceries, utilities and then save anything (not much) that is left. I refuse to fund and perpetuate corporate greed and if our government is going to be complicit in facilitating corporate america fleecing us, I'm just going to opt out altogether.
@mamotalemankoe3775
That bit about being charged interest on the whole when you've paid off most of the principle is ridiculous. How is that legal?
@Johnrl21
These people realize they don’t have a gun to their head to spend right? They could just, ya know, not do it.
@derekcaan7686
If you understand how these cards work - you can really use them to your advantage, trouble is most people are not financially literate
@danmcmahan8170
I collect Credit Card Debt for a major bank and have watched the patterns of problem debt, it comes down to 2 things 1) lack of basic life skills training in high school 2) FOMO. I am old enough to retire and would be happy if Americans acted in a way that put me out of a job but it will not happen. This is NOT the bank’s fault!
@daniellekbingham1104
I had 2 store cards in my life. I paid more interest for those than any other credit card. Ditched those; I refuse any offer for a store card. They are a financial trap. Only major credit cards now, and I pay them off each month.
@DonSchultz-e7e
I decided to fix my finances here. Got sick of my credit score ruining my life.I went in to my credit report and called everyone I owed to and made a payment plan to pay back in 6 Months. Felt awesome. Also with calling them I removed the block on them. I'm 50 and want to live life stress free since I have health issues. I also now go by only spending on things I really need. Also my motto is you can't take your possessions with you when you pass so buying certain things is not worth it.

Credit card companies have lobbied to make a bankruptcy more difficult for the consumer.... pile that onto the heap as well
@davidcarlin3850
Credit card users need to play the game correctly and not be ignorant. Pay off the credit card in full before 30 days, and pick a no annual fee card. A credit card is a temporary means of purchasing until you get paid but only in the short term .
@jaymacpherson8167
Credit card interest rates rose substantially during the 2008 Great Recession. None of the widely used cards’ rates have returned to what they were before 2008. So from my perspective, the creeping up these last few years is not the primary issue. To me the primary issue is that the financial sector’s sub-prime mortgage practices that caused the Great Recession is being leveraged by…the financial sector.
@Michael_Thomas134
I was stupidly in my youth, owed more than I could pay these folks just kept sending me more credit cards, so I filed bankruptcy and none of them got paid.
@champagnebulge1
The female reporter makes the totally accurate point that she's a CNBC analyst so she knows what to look out for when engaging with retail credit cards. Most people are not that savvy. Call it snobby if you want but let's be real.
@iceman4660
This has been used in the UK for decades. As the saying goes there is no such thing as a free lunch.
Someone has to pay and it won't be the companies.
The best approach is to only buy what you can afford at that time. If you choose to go down the 0% route then you must be a disciplined person
@michaelsheridan9741
Apparently because I don’t have what everyone else has I’m not living a decent life in this country. Good to know my life isn’t decent
@BrandonHinds-vm2ez
There are 2 advantages to using a credit card rewards are 1 and 2 you can prove to lenders that u are responsible with money and loan payments wen you are ready to get loans for bigger things like house etc. Having a credit card is not to spend money that u don’t know how u are paying back , its about spending what you know you can pay back . Ppl who are responsible with money have no problem with credit cards !!!
@hudsonfrank1121
A lot of people forget when they're barrowing money it's the bank's money not theirs. Many people do not understand this and frequently spend outside their monthly income. If you treat your credit card like a debit card and only put transactions on there you know you already have the funds for you'll be fine. Borrowing money to get out of debt is a terrible idea yet many do it.
@manwithnoname3454
Simple rule. Time barred debt. Max those cards out. In most states if you don't pay the balance, after 6 months the debt is time barred and you don't have to pay it. Then lock up your credit rating and claim id theft. Be sure to have no debts other than the cards. Wells Fargo ate $15k. Bankrupt these greedy grifting banks.
@miyakawaso
The practice that gets me is allowing autopay for minimum credit card payments. If consumers had to fully reckon with their increased interest charges each month there'd be a lot less debt.
@blueee_pineappl3s
It's because people who sign up for the cards have no control over their spending and don't know how they work.
@fredhadley739
For a financial reporter to say a young person needs to use credit to have a decent life is STUPID. IF a young person can make minimum payments, he/she would be far better off saving for the purchase rather than financing. Debt should not be the norm. FOMO should not be a thing. There is no sofa, vacation, dinner out, etc., that is worth going into debt.
FOMO(错失恐惧症)不应该成为问题。
@LFMcD
You have to pay a credit card off monthly or you will be in debt in no time. If you dont have the money, dont buy. The inability to understand a want and a need is the cause of debt. If they still had Home Economics classes in schools, money management is one of the main things taught.
@HonuFlight
Are we seriously blaming credit card companies for irresponsible usage? DO NOT buy things you can't afford. Pretty simple concept.
@duaynecollins9994
Just paid off my last card end of last year. I will never get another credit card again. It’s a scam. Save 10% of something you didn’t really need, at 36% interest.
@feamatar
I find it a laughable concept that a poor man needs a credit card to live a decent life in any country. If day-to-day purchases require a credit card that will eventually lead to homelessness not to a decent life.
@amberstephens6167
I work in retail and the store is number 1 but I always let the customer know that the store card is a credit card and if they want to apply for it to let me know. I never want the customer to fill like they have sign up for a store card.

Everytime I use my credit card, I make sure I have the money ahead of time so I don't end up in debt. And once the balance hits the credit card account, I pay it off immediately to increase my credit score.

The way to avoid credit card problems is to avoid credit. I use a card for everything for convenience. However, I pay that card off every payday.
@drplando14
I love to shop so I use the card to pay for gas, groceries, restaurants, etc. and get the points. As soon as the transaction goes through I pay off the card so I never carry a balance. They also have promotions for extra points so I get those too. A few months ago I had about three hundred dollars worth of points so I go shopping and never go over my points. All my clothes are essentially free because all I pay is about $2 for the tax.
