Mumbai, India’s Transforming MEGACITY is home to five transportation megaprojects under construction throughout this city of 25 million. This short documentary explores each piece of infrastructure and the larger goal of transforming Mumbai, India’s entertainment and financial capital, into a powerful megaregion by the middle of the century.
The megaprojects: Mumbai Metro, Coastal Road, Sewri-Worli Elevated Corridor flyover, Trans Harbour lix, and Navi Mumbai International Airport.

The biggest project that will bring a lot of benefit to Mumbai that isn’t mentioned is 100km of new storm water tunnels, 50+ pumping stations and 15+ water treatment plants. They aren’t sexy projects but their impact is noticeable.

That auto rickshaw driver is more profound and articulate in his thoughts than I would ever be. Thanks for sharing such a great video

If our MLA are as educated and understanding as this man (auto driver) then India could transform much faster and efficiently …… hats off to this man who chooses nature over greedy needs of life

India is undergoing massive infrastructure development. Soon it will become world’s third largest economy.
@asi2765
Some other projects.
The existing suburban railway will be upxed with modern infrastructure, automated signaling and AC train sets.
Dharavi redevelopment project - Redevelopment of one of the largest slum in the world.
Redevelopment of CST railway station. Although its not confined to the city following projects will benefit the city a lot.
Delhi - Mumbai Industrial corridor
Mumbai - Ahmedabad high speed rail line.
Missing lix project

As a Nigerian I don’t know what am doing here but I cried cuz it’s just like my country I just love India they are trailblazers like my people and they will thrive definitely ✌️peace!!
@sadenb
The metro has to be a game changer for a city like Mumbai. Ideally, something like that should have been done underground completely like the subway of NYC. The two road projects will be a massive relief for passing travelers and will seriously cut down travel time.
@adr2567
Honestly Mumbai is a great example of development. Contrasting its development to Bangalore, Mumbai’s metro was started after Bangalore and now is ahead in terms of lines and finishing dates. I can see why it is the city of growth and will be our own NY in the future I think:
@lucianh1811
After watching this video, I finally understand why Shanghai is called the ‘Eastern Little Mumbai’. Mumbai in 2024 is incredibly advanced and astonishing! It might take Shanghai another 30 years to catch up with Mumbai’s pace. Currently, perhaps only Seoul in South Korea can compete with Mumbai on the world stage.
@narayansingh9407
Mumbai Eastern Waterfront project missed. Where supposedly they will make Manhattan of Mumbai and Mumbai Eye (inspired from London Eye, Dubai) and NYCs Central Park inspired park in Mumbai. It is going to be made on land reclaimed from sea and clearing some old Mumbai dock areas, US Dollar 2 billion Mumbai’s Dharavi Slum Redevelopment project, Mumbai Pune Missing lix Expressway, Naina Smart City project etc
@agrawalamal
If it comes to attention of viewers, the infrastructure growth is multi dimensional. Roads, metro, green spaces along the waterfront, airport, bullet train, redevelopment of dilapidated buildings & slums, basic infrastructure such as storm water drains, water treatment plants, sewage treatment etc.
Many projects not covered here.
Besides one major aspect is totally missed. Mumbai & perhaps Maharashtra has one of the best urban renewal system in place whereby dilapidated buildings can be redeveloped to suit modern needs and still be a win-win for all. I have not seen such phenomenal urban renewal take place at such massive scale simultaneously elsewhere.
Something every Mumbaikar & Maharashtrian should be proud of.
@pallavisreetambraparni6995
My most favorite city in the US is NYC. I have never had chance to visit Mumbai. But I am sure that since I love NYC, I will love Mumbai. One of my desires is to retire in Mumbai. I am working on learning Marathi and Hindi so that I will have better communication with Mumbaikars, people from Pune etc.
@charantej327
Can’t wait for the coastal road project to complete. It will be a life-changing project for the people of Mumbai. It will not just ease the traffic congestion but also reduce the commute problems faced by Mumbaikars.
@agnezabarutanski1963
Nice to see India is galloping forward with infrastructure and GDP growth. However, keep in mind—optimal Gini index is the mother of development. The main goal always has to be good life quality for all citizens. Hopefully this rapid development won’t be focused solely into race against China or to fill already rich pockets.
Good luck and may you thrive as a magnificent civilization that you always were.
@eliotanderson6554
To be fair our plan is to build new cities from scratch like we see Gift city, Dholera, Amaravati (this one at stop) Noida etc… they are built well planned
@rajpawar9343
That guy at the end explained importance of nature perfectly. But government doesn’t seem to care they’re building blindly and now India is biggest polluter after China.
@konjecture
In 5 years, Mumbai will be the world’s financial capital, and India will be the largest economy in the world. Mark my words. This is all due to the genius of the Indian people.
@skullzalliances
The most profound statement for me in the video was towards the start one man said Mumbai is always playing catch up with its population. In a way that’s happening again. We’re building all these bridges and roads, instead of learning from the mistakes of the some Western Cities which are now encouraging people to give up cars and use more public transport and cycling lanes. I’m from Mumbai and the city is currently un-driveable for the most part because of all the construction. By the time these projects truly finish we’ll have even more people moving into the city, not to mention the生态影响. We need to reduce the reliance on cars and the overall reliance on Mumbai too. Empower other cities and towns in the country.
@rajk9098
I’m feeling your grudge against Indian cities. When western countries were pillaging the world and destroying the environment for their economic development nature was ignored. While more than half of the video is complaining about the megaprojects. India few decades ago didn’t have the ability and resources to provide basic infrastructure to its people. But now it does and is doing the best possible effort to provide basic infrastructure.
@davidmiles-hanschell
This excellent documentary illustrates the incredible civil engineering capacity of India to create visionary infrastructure to make life in the congested life of city dwellers in Mumbai and commuters, for a while yet, at best barely tolerable; however it would appear that a technocratic commitment to these projects have ignored the inevitable rising sea levels giving access to the areas of the precious natural environment will destroy them at the same time destroying the social fabric of these semi -urban communities.
@srinivaspandey-td6vj
"If you cooperate with nature, the nature will cooperate with you" Man O Man...INDIA, where sometimes an auto driver can have better civic sense and love towards nature than anyone you can imagine.
@vineettalashi
Its a shame that such a big financial city has not been developed in the last 50 years. All the development projects have been started in just last 15 years...
@manjulachintu3250
Mumbai metropolitan region is huge with large geological factors like national parks,creeks,rivers,sea,hills but if connectivity of these places within the region is increased its going to be the most populated and productive region in India....hope they solve these issues
@markthompson180
that highway along the coast that the engineer said was a "civil engineer's dream" is indeed a civil engineer's dream . . .and a citizen/pedestrian's nightmare. None of this emphasizes or improves the ability of local pedestrians to get around that city. I feel sorry for someone who has to get anywhere on foot in that city because clearly the bias is towards people who own cars. That coastal highway cuts the city off from its own coastline, for the benefit of the few people who can afford to drive cars to and from the downtown area. My prediction is that that highway is going to draw more cars and traffic into the downtown and make traffic worse, while making the pedestrian experience even more of a nightmare. This is the kind of projects most cities in Europe and North America executed in the 60s through the 80s and are now paying to dismantle.
@proudlyindianvideos
i have less hopes considering that in the last 30 years we have had many such mega projects but the issues today remain the same. hats off to the positive thinkers here. Future will tell the final truth
@dopamining7621
This video is propaganda. Building a multi-lane highway all along the waterfront? Many cities did this in the 20th century and now struggle with the mistake. The idea that 6,8,or ten lanes of roaring traffic will somehow create 'green spaces' is insultingly dumb. In fact, the very premise of this video - that a country where people treat each so poorly can be some kind of success story - is just ridiculous.
@berdigylychrejepbayev7503

2/Reclaim land from Ocean.
3/Let the Under ground RAIL SYTEM for both Cargo/Passenger .
4/Start Water Transport along the Arabian sea; Water ways; Nodals with Japan... holland.

Wow these people really hate the current government so much that they politely ignored the things that are changing Mumbai into a better metropolis
@cliffwoodbury5319
A major corridor is needed from Kapurbawadi to Ranjanpada... but I would say that is a very impressive start... But as was stated, there is constant building but the problem is they build to meet demand and more people come. I would say if they build the Kapurbawadi to Ranjanpada corridor (unless there is already a line there) and have other metro railway and roadway modes supporting it the city would be an amazing place to live because the structures will only be more impressive with so many metro rail lines.
@joeperera8145
It's really crazy to build these huge new road projects. It has been proven that more roads just equal more traffic, especially in India where vehicle ownership is comparatively low. Mumbai should be working on reducing the number of cars on the road and improving public transport infrastructure.
@varunsriniwasan6561
The latest infrastructure development will ensure that Mumbai becomes another Shanghai.However, caution must be ensured that along with the massive infrastructure redevelopment environmental concern is not neglected.
@nameisamine
Is the Indian government not investing in Green Infrastructure? For example, subsidies for Electric Vehicles and building electric charge points to reduce air pollution?
@Judah_889
Electric tuk tuk already became very much popular in india. And India's automobile industries like Tata is soon to launch India's indegenious electric vehicles. Including Tesla who's soon to open up it's manufacturing plant is going to produce a different model of Tesla which are affordable and has low costs to build themselves in indian market as well as the market in developing countries. India's one of the biggest project is yet to complete is it's biggest solar plant in gujrat. Infact India is the only G20 country who was nearer of achieving the paris agreement
@deepanshu00730
We have subsidies for electric vehicles likes 2-wheel EV shooters and EV cars. Electric Auto Rickshaw (Tuktuk) are very popular now a days and people are now preferring EV scooters due to low maintenance cost. Companies like TATA, MG, Toyota, Mahindra, Maruti Suzuki have already introduced EV car and are running on Indian roads. India's ranks third in terms of renewable energy production but being a developing country, we cannot work at full potential to shift from thermal energy to renewable energy.
But EVs don't prevent pollution as somewhere coal needs to be burned for producing electricity so, we need some time to shift to generating more Solar and Nuclear electricity.
@henryorcustus3412
Mumbai needs higher density to combat urban sprawl. For a city of 22m, Mumbai has surprisingly sparse high rise densities. Mass transit projects will help boost density but also requires government policy to encourage development of concentrated mini cities within Mumbai.
@marinotagliapietra7839
I got caught at peak hours on a metro train, when it was time to get off, people were trying to exit as people were trying to get on it was chaos, I latched on to a group of young men that literally packed a scrum to force their way off the train.

The problems with Indian city is that there is no planning , transportation and building infrastructure is getting better but not drainage and electricity supply infrastructure is meh

Many important projects ain't mentioned like Biriwali-Thane Twin tunnels!!
North of Mumbai Vertically divided by the gigantic national park. This twin tunnel will b under this park and will connect two immensely important parts of Mumbai!!
@horatiohuskisson5471
It’s a shame about them building that highway. The best way to reduce traffic congestion is to heavily invest in public transit, build cycling infrastructure and improve walkability.
@prithijit2729
Thats the problem with India, the moment we start progressing and build quality infrastructure all hell breaks loose. Suddenly everyone comes running giving unfounded unscientific gyan. As if dooms day is nearing if we undertake major infra upgrade.
Why dont this silly bunch of people point fingers at other countries - West, USA, Middle East, East Asia, South East Asia ?
Has the World come to an end when they built those major infra ? Entire Singapore is built on reclaimed land and they have problem when Mumbai plans to do it for their own citizens.
Sick and tired of this holier than thou attitude and holding back the country’s progress.
