China will deliver the world's first sail-assisted Aframax tanker to a company from the UK, marking a key breakthrough for the country's shipbuilding industry in providing green and low-carbon solutions to modern oil tankers.

The tanker, built by Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation Limited, was named "Brands Hatch" Wednesday, a name inspired by a technically challenging racing circuit in Britain.
china has established itself as a world leader in ship building and has done a great job in doing that. we believe that the events that are going on in the world will make the situation more complex for owners to decide but that ultimately china's leadership position is one that is built on quality and innovative creativity and we think that these are qualities that are here to stay and that china has established itself based on merit and quality and it will continue to do a great job and we will support that

Why don't they just keep on scaling up the size of the tanker? The ratio (fuel use per mile)/(net tonnage) should normally decrease roughly like (net tonnage)^(-1/3) [ deepseek even suggests (net tonnage)^(-0.4) ]... If ports are not suitable for harboring the largest tanker, just transfer the fuel to a smaller tanker close to the port of desination! So you have to wonder why the size of tankers has stagnated after the 70'ies (record holder is still the seawise giant)
Often the less shiny "solutions" are the more sensible ones, to solve efficiency and environmental problems. By scaling, a lot more than 15% fuel can be saved.

@freeflowtrader
If we look at it from the most fundamental atomic state—solid matter floating on liquid and the design of dynamic buoyancy—having ships float on the water’s surface is actually quite inefficient, as the resistance is too great.
However, at present, the tax revenue and consumption of a 1.4 billion population, as well as the global economy, are still not enough to support large-scale production of nano-level steel. This is still a long way off.
In fact, the principle is similar to the concept behind the Dutch artist’s Strandbeest, although that is a perpetual motion concept. If we were to use a certain kind of micro-floating, soft nano-level steel to create convex and concave circular grooves, and use a “going with the flow” approach to reduce surface friction—these grooves could also serve as natural sensors to detect water surface friction. Simply put, the water surface would require circular grooves of about 30cm x 30cm (the size doesn’t really matter—even 1cm would work, as long as there are enough of them) to hold a certain volume of water. The 30x30 size is just an approximate area for interacting with the water surface...
The friction/kinetic energy rate of the water surface can be seen as the x-axis, and previously, I wondered if by creating an up-and-down “y” motion, we could accelerate forward movement and reduce friction.
Suppose we take inspiration from the concept of fighter jet laser weapons slicing through the water’s surface. I just thought of the additional resistance/kinetic energy plane introduced by making an angled cut (although this can be seen as the amount of resistance from the contact area—this kind of thinking comes from my experience designing virtual engine games). Lasers absolutely cannot cut through the sea; you’d need a ship’s pillar. But if it were possible, you could generate waves at the bow, like a surfboard skimming the water. With an up-and-down floating design, you could move forward on the water without needing wind or waves. This is similar to the hydrofoil lift concept—once a certain speed is reached, the hydrofoil generates lift, raising the board above the water.
Thinking further, there is space—for example, 1cm air bubbles—but the water’s surface needs to be compressed to release an equal amount of air... I was just thinking that the resistance from bubbles is lower than from water (but if you don’t have enough energy and speed, bubbles are useless; creating countless bubbles underwater doesn’t mean the ship can float on them).
Even 1cm bubbles would require a secondary expansion of the ship’s steel structure.
Let’s call it “Taiji Steel,” because rather than fighting against the water, it goes with the flow (let me pick my nose for a second).
Alright, young people who see this concept can get started on their ventures—this old man is too lazy to do it himself.
简单来说,水面需要30cmX30cm(其实大小无所谓,1cm也可以,只要数量足够)的圆形槽点装一定容量的水。
