Most people are going to see the Mexican flag or any other foreign flag as some explicit pledge of allegiance to a foreign nation state. Within the context of illegal immigration it conveys to the observer that these peoples loyalties reside elsewhere and thus it undermines their argument to remain in the US.

People fly flags in support of other states in the US all time. Even the Mexican flag on Cinco de Mayo and it hardly solicits any response. Why? Because the context matters.
If you're trying to get support from the American public for foreign nationals here in the US illegally to be granted stay flying a flag of a foreign nation state whilst doing so isn't going to over well. You don't have to like it but it's the reality.

What a load of garbage. Mexicans & Americans have lived side by side since before any of us were alive. We've flown each other's flags regularly as a show of love & support. Giving the US flag that level of exclusivity is silly & out of step with the very purpose of even having a flag. It's just a symbol. The oath of alligiance doesn't imply immigrants must fly only the US flag. Thats silly.

Considering the fact the last administration had tried wiping away history and just letting unhinged rioters tear down statues. I don’t think it’s ok to hide from our past sure we made mistakes but it’s still our history. Personally my ancestors one in particular was responsible for abolishing slavery and was even accosted for his work being he was a prominent leader in Kentucky which was totally against abolishing slavery. Yes we can fly whatever flag we want but let’s be honest the American flag represents us as a country, I fly it proudly in my yard and around my porch! but if i were to be in another country living and especially if I was getting welfare benefits from that country I don’t think id be out there rubbing my home country flag in anyone’s face, I think that’s a disgrace

As an Mexican American I disagree with the professor. I do believe you have the freedom to demonstrate for your heritage, but I don't think this is an appropriate time. If so, carry both flags. Those officers and soldiers don't know if your legal or illegal. Use common sense, be logical. Just as we don't know who is an immigrant just as we don't know what soldiers are prejudice. There are two sides to every story. The immigrants need to show gratitude. It would be more advantageous to carry the American flag or both.

True, I agree. As a mexican, I feel like our flag is being tarnished by the rioters, one thing is to protest peacefully and respecting private property and another thing is to destroy things with no sense of respect. Violence in either side must be condemned. I think that it is ok if people living in the US feels proud of their heritage, but a sign of respect and wisdom is knowing when and where to use the Mexican flag, and as you said, this is not the right moment to do it at all.

California was Mexico until we stole it from Mexico in 1848.4 Other than that, Mexican citizens and people of Mexican decent have been an integral and industrious part of our American society since the beginning of our presence here, so it’s in no way inappropriate for the peaceful protestors to carry the Mexican flag. It’s different story for the violent anarchists who have infiltrated these otherwise peaceful protests, but still mostly inconsequential.

The problems Mexico has with organized crime are due in no small part to the participation of American criminals who take part in the illegal gun trade, human trafficking and drug smuggling/distribution. The context of where the flag is being waved matters.
This context is about relief for foreign nationals in the US illegally from immigration enforcement. Flying flags of foreign nation states to support that cause is completely counterproductive.
This is because to the observer such an expression is likely to be seen as a pledge of allegiance to a foreign nation state. With this in mind the observer is more likely to reach the conclusion that if you like this foreign nation so much then why should you remain here?

Way to miss the point. The discussion is about optics not whether they have the right to which they clearly have and are expressing.
It's about waving the flag of foreign nation state in the context of trying to win support for foreign nationals in the US illegally being granted relief from immigration enforcement.
It just isn't going to go down well as viewed by the broader public. Because many people see these flags being flown in this context as a pledge of allegiance to a foreign nation state.
Where in their mind they are more likely to come to the conclusion that if you have so much loyalty to a foreign nation then why should you remain here?
