Thousands of Chinese researchers and scientists are leaving top jobs in leading US universities and companies, to take posts in China.
The Cambridge area of Massachusetts is home to Harvard, MIT, and scores of leading companies, and was the number one source of returning Chinese research and engineering talent.
In second place is the Palo Alto-Berkeley cluster, which includes Stanford, University of California, and Silicon Valley.
The migration of top scientific and engineering talent back to China is accelerating, but began nearly a decade ago. And while the political situation between China and the United States certainly is a major motivation for many scientists to return, more important is the quality of the education systems. Chinese universities are now claiming the top spots across all the hard science disciplines, while American colleges are tumbling.

To all Chinese, please go while you can.! This country is nuts.

My Chinese family has been in the US since 1923. Four generations later, collectively we have over 100 years of interaction with White American as white and blue-collar, educated and illiterate, rich and poor "classes", I can honestly attribute the constant harassments and putdowns (out of fear) to the R word. In most cases, just the physical appearance of a East Asian man, yes man, would be the trigger.
Follow Morris Chang's life, he was never afforded the opportunity to lead a company, he had to travel to Taiwan (not his bornplace) to start TSMC, now Trump said he stole the business/technoloies from the US.

We have educated for 3-4 decades for China to be the best, while lagging ourselves. Our best ones have left for China or been bought, or have been "copied". They take what they want and then leave. The real damage has all been done. Asians are smarter and harder-working and more dedicated in every way, eventually this happens. We have been chumped, deservedly so.

I have to seriously considering moving to China after I graduate in October with my masters degree in Data Science because there are no opportunities in America, where there is a rampant Anti-Intellectualism campaign going on and a cultural war against colleges/higher education. They don't value us here but I am already getting offers in China. China is the future.

A little more than a decade ago I was having a conversation with a visiting scholar from China, I told him that many Americans consider that the high percentage of Chinese research fellows in American institutions as a national security threat, his response was interesting, he said, "It is also a national security problem for us, the way I see it, we are being brain drained, our smartest and most educated are working in your labs instead of ours" I guess now we are moving in the direction that would make both sides are happy.
@coliv2
The US already had trouble with research and development before Trump, because of the reduced pool of money available for research. Now, leaving the US, at least for Chinese researchers, is a no-brainer. The US is losing a position that may take decades to recover, if ever.

This mirrors what has happened to the UK after leaving the EU … My family, wife and children are all academics, PhD doctors .. The UK has become an academic pariah or indeed … just a pariah
Trump has achieved the same, no one educated and/or wealthy has to to live in a country that h4ates everyone, is bigoted and xenophobic. America is the 'Dead Man Walking'

My friend's son is a respected aeronautical scientist. The China-threat narrative and fearmongering in the past few years made life unbearable for many Asians. So last year, he quit and left the country. Another scientist lost.

Just to remind people that the technology race is essentially a race between East Asians with Chinese talent based in Mainland China and overseas ethnic Chinese as the dominant force.

This reminding me of Germany and Austria in the 1920s-1930s when the higher education institutions actively discriminated against specific ethnic groups. That didn’t went well with the Nazis afterward.

The USA has been undervaluing people in the STEM fields, in favor of people studying to become bankers, insurance agents and real estate agents. This is an on going trend.

This reminds me the story of a top rocket scientist (one of the founders of NASA) left the US back to China in 1950s. He became the founder of Chinese rocket/ missile research/ industry.
History repeats, at least repeats in the US.

That tends to happen when you have disappearing on the streets, police kidnappings and roughing up of pregnant woman, and general fear and paranoia in society. The United States is a shithole, I am so ready to leave myself, absolutely frustrated to the max here.

If a country, like the USA, has created an economy heavily based on finance, money and pyramid schemes, then it makes sense that they wouldn't pay much attention to traditionally important disciplines like the sciences, the maths and the technologies. This is why we're witnessing a decline in the once prestigious US universities.

One of the hallmarks of great empires throughout history is that they attracted the best and the brightest from every corner of the empire. The Mongols in particular were famous for this. The loss of this talent is one (of many) clear sign the American empire is in it's final stages. Unfortunately our owners seem intent on igniting WW3 before they lose their immense power and hegemony.

Since 2010, I , as a Chinese American, have advised Chinese graduates from US universities to return to China for better career opportunities. Indeed, a large percentage of them do return to China. Those stays in US probably get very attractive offers. But, now, even they are leaving.

yeah, but the USA leads in gender studies.. and China leads the way in almost every science. If I was 18, I'd want to move to China to study.

My partner is attending a conference in the medical sciences in the US right now. There's a rival conference in Singapore. Most non American scientists in this area are choosing to attend the conference in Singapore. Some if the headline talks at the US conference are subscxtion only, unless you pay to attend on top of your conference fee then you cant go. Not the conference organisers fault that people are choosing to go elsewhere but it's telling that they're not making themselves more attractive by putting most of the interesting research behind a paywall.

Educational rankings are, in most cases, meaningless. What matters is how a nation uses the brains it has. The USA beats intelligence, brains, education to death. Meanwhile, China uses intelligence, brains, education to make China great.

It is really a heart warming news to hear large number of Chinese scientists returning to the motherland to contribute to national development! They can't stay comfortably in the US to achieve their goals if racism and geopolitical struggle are aimed to push them out from their posts!
@Deepshit2025
Western education is really expensive. Furthermore, the standard has been dropping or being catched up by Asian universities. China has been closing the gap with the US in almost every industry. Now, if you're well-paid in China, you are living like a king. Safety better, forget about racism.

It is a win-win situation, Chinese postgraduate students, researchers and scientists are not wanted here and they are being welcomed in China, Europe, Canada and Singapore.
Just give them a year or two and most of them will be gone. I suppose the next group to be threatened will be scientists and researchers from India.
Be careful what you wish for, once the talent pool has left the next to leave will be the companies.

Significant number of top Chinese scientists are leaving the US and returning to China, driven by various factors including concerns over discrimination and fears of federal investigations by the US.
The current climate of heightened scrutiny and the revocation of visas for Chinese students and researchers is creating a challenging environment that could lead to a brain drain and further deterioration of US-China relations.

This is how it was in my post graduate program. 50+ students in program, I was only bathed born American, geochemist and environmental engineer. Mostly everyone went home and the main reason even in 2002, scientists with lots of papers published due to immigration. Nothing new, just supercharged.

My main concern is how to survive all of these financial and political crisis, especially in light of the US political power scuffle. The government has really called things more difficult for its citizens, and we can't sit back and bear all the consequences of the bad governance thank God I found out about digital marketing all thanks to KATHY JEAN KAPPLER I went from $176,000 in debt with zero savings or retirement to now, 2 years later, fully debt-free and over $100,000 networth. I know that doesn't SOUND like a lot, but I'm incredibly proud of it. Now l'm fast-tracking my wealth building (investing $400,000 annually) and don't owe a dime to anyone. It's a good feeling
