Can’t remember who, but a guest on Bloomberg months ago said, with absolute confidence, that Musk was going to be “thrown out with the bath water” by Trump sooner or later, and Trump had no real interest in cutting the deficit, controlling spending, or in any of Musk’s interests in EVs, etc. and had just used him and took his campaign money and support for all it was worth, but couldn’t wait to ditch him.

Listening to Trump talk, he can’t get out of his own way, his narcissistic personality disorder completely directs his behavior. I’ll give him, he’s a master con man, probably the best, ever. But at this stage, most Presidents have a way of elevating themselves out of their own small personal interests to magnanimous interests of their citizens. Even Biden was able to do that. In fact I can’t remember a President who didn’t honestly stand up for his country. Not Trump. He’s still focused on this small circle of personal interest.

I’ve done enough deals in my life to recognize what happened here: Elon Musk fell into what I call an Uncovered Quid Pro Quo—doing someone a major favor while assuming they’ll repay you, even though no formal agreement exists. I learned this the hard way early in my career when I built a revolutionary system for my company on my own time, expecting a promotion. Instead, I got a $100 gift card. No one had asked me to build it, so legally and practically, they owed me nothing. That’s the danger of acting on assumptions instead of agreements.
Elon made the same mistake. He became laser-focused on the national deficit and assumed Trump shared that urgency. So, he endorsed Trump, offered his help, and even launched DOGE to root out government waste—believing Trump would then dedicate his presidency to slashing spending. But there was no deal. No contract. No promise. And when Trump’s spending plan increased the budget by $2 trillion, Elon felt betrayed—over a commitment that was never actually made.
The truth is, Elon did the work as a favor. And Trump, being the elected president who literally risked his life to get into office, isn’t going to hand over his agenda to someone who volunteered. I like Elon and respect his intellect—but if he’s as sharp as people say, how did he fall for such a basic mistake? Especially when dealing with the master negotiator himself—Donald Trump.
