Plenty.
November 2024 was an eye opener. All the super white washed anti Chinese overseas born Chinese were in the village. The ones that were self hating made anti Chinese racist jokes.
They were here to get a letter and photocopies of clan records (I scanned them in so they’re actually printouts) so they could get HK residency a short cut to PRC citizenship that circumvents the 7 year rule.
Some of the ones I hated didn’t get those letters or photocopies.
But the conditions in the UK have deteriorated so significantly as has the overt and open racism many of them are looking for a way out.
Even hyper Karen is thinking of it

BTW, my mom a Canadian, about 10 years ago came back and live in HK in one of those flat specifically designed for the elderly and now can also entitle a $4000 per month old age allowance and free medical.
OHH HELL NAHHHH, LEMME TELL U SMTH a 1500 s ft apartment costs guess what: 40 MILLION HKD which is like 5 MILLION USD (btw in Kowloon city)

Thank you for sharing, but Hong Kong's extremely high cost of living, it isn't an ideal retirement choice for most ordinary people.
Hong Kong’s high cost of living is over egged.
If you live in a HK New Territories village? You can rent an entire house 500–700sqft for $9000HKD that’s $1200USD.
Add in the fact you don’t need a car it’s the foreigner bubble that makes people think the CoL is super high. They want to live in the Mid-levels or Olympic and they demand to have their own cars, a live in maid and their apartments cleaned every day.
One hour from hong kong in zhuhai or zhongshan you can get a 200 square meter house for US700 a month. A lot of retirees are moving there soon.

Yes, but this is where I’m at here and now. My dad lives over in Meizhou and pops over now and again (he personally can’t stand a lot of his generation).

I’ve visited Hong Kong—though obviously couldn’t explore every corner. If you love island life, Hong Kong or other Southeast Asian countries could work, but Hong Kong is undoubtedly safer! With a budget of $3,000/month, rural areas near major Chinese cities would offer far more options and a significantly better quality of life.
I'm actually thinking about it at the moment.
For background, I'm from India and my wife is from Taiwan. China makes it really easy for Taiwanese to live here and we just need to go through some paperwork for me to have a spousal visa that allows me to stay here as her husband. We haven't quite worked out the details since I should be able to continue to get a work visa for another 7 years - once I get a spousal visa I can't work on it so it's only something we'd activate if I get refused a work visa.
In the past we've also uated retiring in India, Taiwan or a 3rd place like Malaysia or Thailand, but honestly, we both like it so much here that it's a serious option. Probably not Shanghai, though - if we did this we'd move to a smaller city like xiamen or Lijiang… maybe run a little restaurant & bar, have a little stage with all of our musical instruments and have open mic nights every night…
I did explore the PR option but
a) It's not that easy to get - easier if I'd lived in Beijing instead of Shanghai
b) Not really permanent - it's 5 years at a time and I don't know if it'll keep getting renewed as I get older… I suspect it is indirectly tied to whether you bring any economic value
My question would be…how?
Shenzhen is my first choice.
I make a great income and have plenty of assets. I can buy my way I to Switzerland through forfait fiscal but it would be somewhat of a financial stretch.
And I'd like to do that for climate and good schools - like they have in Shenzhen.
But unless you can find work for a Chinese company, there's no easy way to get even a 2–3 year visa, much less permanent residency. And work visa isn't exactly retirement.
The best way I have found so far is to create a wholly owned enterprise, let's say in consulting, hire 2–3 Chinese nationals, and then be Ok making a loss (if you actually don't want to work much) for the entire time you plan to live there. And then maybe after 10 years you can get PR.
Compared to places like Portugal, Germany, etc, this is highly challenging.
Might still go for it, but I can understand of most people who want to simply cannot.
Ironically the response to “if China’s so great why don't you move there" is simply…it's hard, very hard.
Wanting to do something and doing it well isn’t too difficult, and based on your descxtion, you can easily obtain long-term residency—not just a work visa! You can look into the S2 visa
S2 is a visitor visa so that doesn't work
I already have an 10-year multiple entry visa for up to 180 days a year. That's not the same as living there though.
About Long-Term Stay in China:
For those considering retirement or long-term living in China, it's actually possible to stay beyond the usual tourist visas. One of the more practical paths is applying for a Private Affairs Residence Permit, which can be based on an S2 visa.
This route allows for long-term stay and is renewable, making it a more stable option for people who want to live in China without constantly worrying about visa runs or short-term extensions.
Of course, the key requirements and eligibility details vary depending on your situation, and not everything is suitable to share openly online. But I’d be happy to discuss it privately if anyone is genuinely exploring this path.
As a preface, China is not America or a western country , and it doesn’t need to model itself as one for it to be successful.
What I mean is attractibility to retirees shouldn’t be equated to the success of a country if that’s not what they need for their constituents or long term success
Gibraltar can attract retirees from the UK, doesn’t mean that Gibraltar should be the pinnacle that other countries need to compete on
But at the same time, China isn’t the only or even best option. There is no doubt we could if we absolutely needed to, and we’d probably get into the process of settling in a tad faster than others thanks to friends and a family networks to vouch for us, but overall the work environment is still seen by my wife and me as unattractive compared to the US’s hours to money ratio.
Accounting also sits pretty close to the social sciences rather than hard sciences like actuarials. This means all those years understanding US accounting rules, authoritative guidance, and accounting regulations does not translate well into a foreign country. Even Canada is different enough where I’m sure I wouldn’t be as competitive as I would be in the states
so if it’s same kind of social and occupational location move, China is not the place for us
maybe if it was like a real retirement decades from now and we really want to rebel against suburbia east coast for something completely different like a Mongolian or Kazakhstan-xinjiang steppe retirement, that might be something my wife and I might be down for
China does not have any retirement visas. In addtion, China is perhaps one fo the hardest countries in the world to get PR or citizenship.
