In early April, the government approved plans to develop Rampion 2, an offshore wind farm with enough energy to power around 1 million U.K. homes. The expansion of the Rampion offshore wind farm, off England’s south coast, would include the addition of 90 turbines to add 1.2 GW of capacity. The project is expected to create 4,000 jobs during the construction phase, which is scheduled to commence in 2026. The government decision on the expansion was expected to be delivered in February but it has been delayed while more information is collected from the project’s developer.

The wind farm is being developed by RWE as the majority shareholder (50.1 percent), a Macquarie-led consortium (25 percent), and Enbridge (24.9 percent). The electricity produced at Rampion will be transported to land via subsea cables. An underground cable will then deliver the power inland to a new substation at Oakendene near Cowfold before connecting it to the national grid at Bolney in Sussex. Last year was a record year for wind energy production, with onshore and offshore projects producing 83 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity across Great Britain, an increase from almost 79 TWh in 2023. In around 10 days in December alone, over 50 percent of Britain's electricity production came from wind. However, there are also less windy periods, where energy production is lower. This idea that gas energy is more expensive than wind needs to stop.
The reality of the situation is that the gas capacity is only needed because we are so reliant on the wind, so separating the two is a false dichotomy. If we went back to burning coal for example we wouldn't need gas. Equally if we built enough nuclear we wouldn't need gas either.
Gas in our current energy mix is a crutch for wind, so that we still have power when the wind drops. Rather than saying "muh gas expensive" you should be factoring the cost of keeping all these gas power stations on standby into the overall cost of wind. The reason people don't do this is that it reveals an inconvenient truth: that wind energy isn't actually that cheap after all.

The idea is that once the grid is upxed we are going to be, over the course of the year - huge net exporters of renewable energy. Those connectors abroad run both ways so when it’s windy (it usually is here) we export profitable clean energy. When it’s not windy we then import energy from Norway & France.
It’s quite a good system. Although we do need more base load energy like nuclear power & pumped hydro storage. And we will always need gas in some capacity.

Good job then that there are plenty of dedicated renewable energy firms that are more than willing to pick up the slack.
Fossil fuel firms should realise they need to switch to renewables to remain competitive in the long term. Even if you're a denier you have to realise it's cheaper to get your power just by raising a few windmills rather than rip coal or oil out of the ground, ship it, burn it and dispose of the waste.

The oil companies are basically chemical engineering and geology companies, it's not really all that surprising that they aren't going to be good at renewables, which are a different business. Once you get a transition to a zero carbon or low carbon world I'd expect the oil companies to go bust.
