It’s one of the most populous cities on the planet with 22 million inhabitants, predicted to increase to 30 million by 2035. Nicknamed ‘the infernal Metropolis’, Mumbai is a city in perpetual development. But with millions of people living in slums located on valuable real estate, how can city planners balance the competing needs of the population?
In Dharavi, the largest slum in Asia, over one million people are packed into the 2 km. slum. But although its residents are poor, there’s a real dynamism. Mahesh, 27, was born and lives in this slum and would never leave it. He runs a recycling plant and employs around 20 people. Dharavi’s underground economy is thought to generate 800 million euros per year. But it also lies on prime real estate in the very centre of Mumbai so its future is in doubt.
Every day, new towers of glass or concrete emerge from the earth. With the support of the municipality, real estate tycoon, Babulal Varma, razes slums to build luxury apartments for the upper classes. As the city constantly expands, it pushes into the surrounding forests and natural spaces, such as Sanjay Gandhi Park. The fifty leopards who live there regularly make forays into the new housing estates. They attack stray dogs, but also the inhabitants. Each year, several people are killed by feline attacks. At night, forest department rangers patrol to prevent leopard incursions.
This documentary was produced by Ligne de Front and directed by Marc de La Villardière & Manolo d'Arthuys. It was first released in 2021.

So much respect for the older gentleman who started the leather goods business. You sir deserve every bit of success I hope you have a very comfortable retirement and many grandchildren
After watching this documentary, I'll never complain about the crowded trains in London again. These kind of videos gives u such a reality check to 3rd world problems vs 1st world issues.
So what I got from this video is gratitude, which is such an underrated virtue
As an Indian and a Mumbaikar who has lived in Mumbai for 24 years, I have to admit that Mumbai is truly a shithole. No one cares about how terribly bad the roads are, how terrible the infrastructure is, how corrupt the government is. No one cares about these things.
In this country, people will be outraged over a movie that hurts their religious or cultural sentiments while still taking a shit on the street. I’m really grateful to have had the chance to gotten out of that shithole. There’s nothing wrong with that patch of land that they call India. Just the mentality of the people that holds us all back from prosperity.
Mumbai city paints a clear picture of the gap that exists between the rich and the poor in the developing countries. Nairobi city is also another example.
the bloke with 9 children is such a smart guy, like havent u heard of pulling out. this is why india is growing to highest population in the world.
Regardless of the situation in India, I really appreciate seeing Indians in videos laughing and enjoying each other's company. A developed country should take notice of this. Warm greetings from Indonesia to Indians
I went to India to meet some business partners and after visiting Im done. They refused to buy forklifts to unload shipping containers, because it was infinitely cheaper to get 8 guys to unload them by hand for a couple of hours. It seemed so natural to them that they didnt even see it as inhumane or weird.
That's crazy. How they can live in that condition? What their government doing? At least, give them a proper transportation and sanitation. Seeing this, their government still proudly said their economy growth is amazing. What a joke
i visited Daravi in 2015, i was impressed by that harsh situation.
i sincerely wish india to rise faster so that its people can hv better life.
Seoul Korea was like a little Munbai in the 50s, 60s, and even in the early 70s after the Korean War (1950 - 1953). There were patches of shanty towns, shits on the streets, and polluted rivers.
Now, Seoul's metropolitan subway is the cleanest in the world. It was the determination of the Korean people under a strong leadership that made the change.
In a typical European city the gap between rich and poor is less noticeable due to better infrastructure and social welfare. The situation in Mumbai is shared by other major cities from the developing world such as Saigon, Shanghai which all looking very modernised with hundreds of skyscrapers but the life quality of an ordinary inhabitant normally has room to improve.
Was in Bombay 33 years ago , got a big shock when stumbled on Dharavi.
But was fascinated by the amount of smiles.
I find the property developer in this video, to be your usual greedy scumbag.
I have a lot of respect for these professionals (lawyers, office workers) who ride a train in 45 degree/113 degrees Fahrenheit weather and still be able to laugh and smile despite the terrible conditions.
He pushed the poor out without giving them a liveable alternative. Justice served! I hope he spends many years in prison, and his money used to fulfill his promise to the poor!
no doubt indian economy is florishing and progressing but its skyrocketing population makes hurdles in the development of common layman.

Excellent documentary. I very much respect the innovative and hard working spirit of the people of India. Be not tempted to judge by Western standards, instead, take care of your family and neighbours.
Even with all the crowds and pushing you still see great Indian discipline. I will keep praying for India's success because those guys work very hard.
This is sickening to watch. You have millions of Indians all around the world but yet there are still over a billion people in India. This is beyond comprehension.
The population of Mumbai almost the same as the population of Peninsula M'sia plus East M'sia @ Sabah and Sarawak; Total population; 33 million only and compare to Mumbai 22 million such a compact and cramps area!!!
That one dude with the plastic business is a legit businessman in my opinion, man didnt have a great start, but he definetely didn't give up
When you see very rich and very poor in one town, separated in few kilometers you definitely understand that there is something wrong with the country.
This is the most amazing documentary I've seen on YouTube. Well thought through. I thought I would watch it in a breakdown but ended up watching the whole video all in one shot.
My idea is for India needs to elevate and double deck their trains. There will be challenges and sacrifices to be made. But this is so much needed. It is really a challenge for an overpopulated city. God bless India.
Notice the rich ones are lighter complexioned and the poor ones are darker complexioned. This is not a by accident, india is racist ahf. They discriminate against darker skin in job market, bollywood etc. Truly sad

The most scared thing that this movie didn't show even 1/1000 part of what the real life in poverty in Mumbai. I trveled in this country in 2019 and I was shocked how the human being can survive in such a conditions!
As a westerner— this looks like a nightmare. I fear that in centuries to come, the whole world will resemble India. India needs to seriously establish a population decline plan for several centuries
I have once lived high up and have to say that I like the bottom floor the best at least if it has a small yard while the others only have a balcony.
I'm grateful for everything I have here and there's nothing I could complain about because there's so many others who're not so lucky and we have the same problem here
Hopefully in the future it will be better and the government will evolve to be better.
And someone does something or another country helps their government to wake up in this humanitarian work and situation.
Sending so much love to all of you there from Indonesia
Interesting documentary
It might be a good idea to have a slum clearance by giving the poor free housing, but provision should be made to provide facilities for all the various industries that were in the slum area such as plastic recycling, garment making etc
Karachi Population is almost nearer to mumbai 20million in 2023 but it living standard is much better mumbai is obvisouly city of dreams karachi dont have to much slums hats off to mahesh he is entreprenur inspired me a lot
The process of making a documentary requires dedication, hard work, and capital. By the look of this documentary, I m obliged to salute the producers and all the staff who have produced an informative and an eye opening into the world we didn’t understand.
Now i understand why there are many people from india living in our country, they have flourished here their such hardworkers and intelligent. So they are putting up business here and they are given equal opportunity to get rich and they employed many people in our place, Philippines.
the poorer people are the more kids they have perpetuating the situation.....and I have lived and worked on every continent except for antarctica and been in a ton of third world countries worse then this and ive been to Mumbai...its also a tech hub
These people in Mumbai don't even have a dollar to their name. Yet, they bravely go about their lives with a smile on their faces and deal with adversity with humor and fortitude. Compare that with the US, where folks in inner cities are shooting each other, living in fatherless families and generally leading a destructive life. Same goes for some of the MAGA folks who seem to want to do a coup in the US. Is it cultural or is there something in the DNA of India which prevents India with all its issues from devolving into the hell holes that inner cities are in the USofA? Most of these folks are coming from villages to work for their families back home so they can send money back to villages in poor regions of India (Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, etc). Not meaning to be disrespectful of the challenges that people in the US have had to face over the last 2 centuries, but the contrast is still very striking. These are guys are not selling drugs, joining gangs, indulging in drive by shootings and looting stores, in spite of the fact that their lot is considerably worse that many others.
If it’s a city of dreams why aren’t the government building houses for the poor people get rid of the slums, fix up the sewage system, build factories for workers it’s disgusting and disgraceful how people are treated.
There’s a world of difference between the trains in India and Japan. Having experienced Japan’s rail system firsthand, I saw how everything from the cleanliness to the punctuality is on a completely different level. Japanese trains are meticulously maintained, with clean carriages, quiet passengers, and an almost obsessive focus on arriving exactly on time. In contrast, while India’s trains are vital for its vast population, they often face challenges with overcrowding, cleanliness, and delays. The difference in both infrastructure and public behavior between the two countries makes Japan’s rail system feel far more reliable and efficient.
The Indian people have a strong work ethic. I just wish there was a little bit more compassion for the working poor in that city as they contribute so much to the economy of Mumbai.
That’s so sad that the poor have to live unsafe around wild animals & the animals are in their own domain so they will hunt & prey on small children & animals it’s horrible that family lost their child in that way because the rich want to live lavishly they need to give them a decent home for losing a precious life may she rest in peace
But everyone seems so happy and cheerful. I went in 2023, I loved Mumbai! People were so friendly, joking, helpful and welcoming. Not like the miserable lot in Dubai where I flew from.
They should finish the relocation housing and shops before the fancy buildings. All the people in the slums should be better off for the trouble of being forced to leave not worse. It seems like they were better off in the slums. The lack of empathy and care for the people that their success was literally built over the lives of.
My wife is from Mumbai, and a suburb called Bandra is very wealthy. Her family still owns many properties in Bandra. Still, here, you can be rich, but you can never get away from filth, poverty, begging, smell, and worse, the pollution in the air.
I think there is some serious mistake…the first apartment you told is just 750 sq ft with a price of USD 360000..the apartment was not looking like a small 750 sq ft apartment though and the price must be mistaken …the second apartment is just 560 sq ft but it looks like a big apartment and the price mentioned was USD 780,000 …these prices are even far more expensive than USA and Canada …how is this possible? I know Mumbai is expensive but it cannot be that expensive
