Not turbulence but once while flying we got hit by a stream of air from another commercial airline under 1000ft away. They had gone off their flight path. The whole plane was suddenly pushed to the right at a diagonal, as if someone had shoved the left wing up, and felt like it was falling through the air at an angle for 2-3 full seconds. People screaming, bodies and hands lifting up into the air but thankfully everyone including flight attendants was seated and I had the thought: “oh, so this is what it feels like to be in a plane that is falling out of the sky” before the pilot got the plane under control. People were crying as the pilot assured us he didn’t know what happened but we were in the clear. It took a few announcements before the pilot understood what exactly had gone wrong and he sounded like he was having a difficult time containing his anger as he explained it, so I got the sense that what happened was very dangerous.

Everyone be going on about high-speed rail when we just need better passenger rail period.
Our only meaningful inter-city rail service, Amtrak, is treated as a third-rate citizen by the big freight rail companies that own all the track cris-crossing the US.
And of course, Amtrak itself doesn't get enough money to lay their own, and IMHO that'd be insanely wasteful and pointless anyways.
We need better rules to use the infrastructure we already have smarter.

My biggest issue with this video is the way you portray turbulence as some dangerous thing that needs to be avoided at all costs. While it's true severe turbulence could and has lead to accidents, the primary reason for avoiding turbulence is comfort. It can be dangerous in severe circumstances, but the way you are talking about it here makes it seem like something scarier than it truly is. It is misleading statements in reference to things like this that cause people to more afraid of flying than they really should be. You say that over a quarter of wx related accidents occur due to CAT, but you don't really expand on what that number means. By doing this you really mis-represent the danger and, whether intentionally or not, you perpetuate a stigma that causes people to have unnecessary anxiety and fear towards aviation as a whole. This is absolutely made clear by your comment section.

There is no more turbulence today than before. I would even venture to say from 40+ years of experience, that there is less turbulence today than before, or maybe it’s because I have now more experience . What has happened though, is that there is less experience in the flight deck and many pilots today are applying quite dangerous techniques to mitigate indicated airspeed excursions, causing those severe turbulence events. So, all I can tell passengers is to buckle up and stay that way for the whole flight, to mitigate the risk that your flight may be under the command of these new less experienced pilots.

In theory you could "see" clear air turbulences on modern jets with the equipment on board - it seems to be just not a severe enough issue. Let me explain:
There's two different types of radar (which matters for this discussion) on planes: Weather radar, which shows water content of the air in front, and which is used constantly while flying, and doppler radar, which can detect windshear and which isn't shown on a display, but interpreted by a computer to give off a warning. The doppler radar can see severe down drafts over an area and is used on approach, to avoid flying into them without enough engine power to climb out again.
If the computer, which interprets this data detects a windshear, there's an audible warning "windshear, windshear" and the crew executes a Go Around with a fixed angle of attack and maximum engine power (TOGA) to avoid the down draft by climbing.
This system could in theory also be used to give off warnings about turbulences ahead and at least give the crew and the passengers some warning time, until they hit it.

I remember in early 2010s, I was flying from london to singapore with british airways, and it was crazy, out of 13 hours of flying, we had turbulence for around 10+ hours. the plane dropped few times too. I kept saying in my heart, is this the end? when we landed (it was a very rough landing) in singapore, everyone clapped their hands and cheering.

I saw an article about the changing weather patterns and airplane turbulence while i was in China. I was so mervius to fly back to the US but our flight was actually really smooth the whole time. We flew a couole tikes to different parts of China and EVERY FLIGHT even two hour flight we hit unexpected turbulence even when it was sunny and clear. To be fair theres lots of mountainous terrain and that certainly can cause some turbulence but it is good to be aware of the changing weather patterns. And i think i also saw an article about how engineers are redisigning planes/engines to better handle the increase in turbulence. So people are on it, i just hope these companies will properly pay the engineers and mechanics so we can continue to have safe flights.

You're less safe on the ground: Tornadoes, hurricanes, microbursts, Tsunamis, blizzards, etc. There are plenty more ways to experience bad weather on the ground that is problematic than in the air.

They talk about a 55% increase in turbulence in the last 40 years, but does that account for the drastic increase in air travel in the same time frx? I'm not over here denying climate change, and no doubt its a factor here, but we blame it on everything. If they are basing this data on "the amount of time aircraft spent in turbulent airspace" then you have to find a way to account for the increased number of aircraft passing through any given airspace before you start trying to make bold claims like its actually getting worse.

I've actually flow only a handful of times; just about everytime I've gone through turbulence that was so bad, it looked like the wings were flapping. Honestly if I'm not flying around the world, I think I would rather keep my feet on the ground.

I know a flight attendant, once a flight hit turbulence and she was flung up to the ceiling and down to the floor over and over until a passenger caught her skirt. It was very hard for her to go flying again.

I used to fly all the time growing up. Within the last few years it has been horrible, and now I need medication to get on a plane after a horrific turbulence event at night that had everyone on the plane screaming.
Like, we would fly 3-4 times per year overseas as I was growing up. I was a frequent flyer. Not afraid of planes at all, I actually loved them very much. The turbulence has gotten remarkably worse.

Reasons you should ALWAYS have your seatbelt on. Unless you need to get up to grab something or use the bathroom. I'll loosen mine just a little so I can fomfortably chenge sitting positions. But you should still always have it on. Your neck will not win if you're thrown up into the overhead area violently. And if it does, you're in for a world of hurt

Namely, how did researchers, if at all, account for the increase in the quantity and distance of flights from the beginning of the era to the end? People have been flying more often and further than ever before, so that could potentially influence the data.

I've been an airline worker for over a decade. I noticed the number of weather related delays increasing over the years. Especially when I went from being a baggage handler to a reservation agent. It was frustrating to explain to passengers that- just because the sky is clear in your departing airport and arriving airport, it doesn't mean it's clear in-between. Also... Your Plane Has To COME From Somewhere! We had a week where there was a giant storm going straight up the middle of the US. Planes couldn't get across it, leading to pilots, flight attendants, and aircraft being stuck in different places.

I have to wonder if it really is happening more often because I've been flying since the 80's and I can tell you it's always been an issue, got a bit better near the conjunction of the centuries. Huge altitude changes were super common and very scary but the captain always had the seatbelt sign on by the time the hard stuff hit...maybe it's more because of an issue with experienced pilots, or lack there of...I wonder if it's more common because of reporting...or, again, lack there of...

Having been a Pilot Professionally for 25 years. I have seen no notable increase in the amount of turbulence.
I have no idea where these “experts” got their “data”. In the last 15 years reporting of safety incidents has become more prent in aviation. In the past if no one got injured it was uncommon for the crew to file a report. Today it is more common to report turbulence even when no injuries occurred. This might explain an uptick in reports.

in my honest opinion, this is a good thing. we need to avoid flying and push for more comfortable and renewable forms of transit. If only we had something that could run on rails....

Don't you worry, flying is the last mode of transport I ever choose! Not because of fear, but because the airline industry has made the experience as unpleasant as they possibly can. Sadly, until they build a bullet train across the Pacific Ocean, I don't have a lot of choice.

I’m sick and tired of all these so called scientists and politicians lecturing us about climate change, while they travel to climate summits on their private jets rather than drive, or even better zoom. I’m also sick and tired of the US and Europe choking their people and their economy about climate change while turning a blind eye to China and India who are emitting more carbon in one month than the US and Europe combined in one year. And now they try to scare us with turbulence and how we are to blame. I’m sure Taylor swift, Al gore, and John Kerry have no role in this climate change with their private jets.

Interesting. I just assumed they were flying at a speed/altitude/route that was cheaper (fuel) but more turbulent.

This feels wrong. The lower number of data point(points only collected because it was an incident), and more flights in general in modern day, means that the increase is just being detected more. Not that there are actually more. This feels like a clear statistical reasoning error... There's no way for them to actually prove it unless they take the exact same zones, times/seasons and weather, and number of flights all into play. I wish SciShow would do a video on understanding research papers and looking at the statistics. How some of these papers are taking in data, analyzing it, and reporting(and summarizing) their findings. A lot of it can be twisted out of context.

I grew up on planes and in airports, so I'm that person that goes "weee!" when turbulence makes the plane drop. I've flown through some gnarly winter storms during "polar vortexes". Still safer than driving my car to work.

I remember when I was a kid and was flying it was only like 1-2 times an hour that the seatbelt icon was turned on and only lasted a few minutes but now it seams to be 3-4 times an hour and lasts for way longer so something sure changed
记得小时候坐飞机,每小时顶多一两次系安全带提示,每次就几分钟。现在变成每小时三四次,持续时间还更长,肯定有什么变化。

I was at flight to Singapore and experienced severe turbulence a few years ago. Not fun. Only a a second or two but it felt I was in free fall.good luck to ye travellers

Wing design have changed alot over the last 25 years. Resulting in much more efficient wings. But a more efficient wing will also be more effected by change in pressure/turbulence. So everything can't be blamed on climate change.
