I’ve been to India alone as a woman. I DO NOT recommend women go alone or in a small group. Perhaps in a guided bus type tour it would be reasonable, but definitely not on your own.
I am a very savvy traveler and had MULTIPLE very close calls there. I’m extremely lucky nothing happened to me and attribute it also partly because of my experience. I won’t be taking that gamble again.

As an Indian (unfortunately) m telling to both men and women do not come to this shithole of a country. Even as a citizen, I don't have the courage to travel to any sparsely populated location especially at night. And with women, there is no question about it, anything could happen. When I travel with my wife it's only during day and even then I avoid too lonely or offbeat places. For night these places are totally off-radar for us and we visit only those areas which have lot of people like some city centers, malls, or beach areas where there are lot of restaurants, lights n parties go on.
