A former Nato commander believes plans due to be put forward by Sir Keir Starmer to send fewer than 30,000 European peacekeeping troops to Ukraine aren’t credible and that Britain must prepare for war with Russia.
General Sir Richard Shirreff said Russia must be defeated before any peacekeeping mission, but warned allied powers deploying peacekeeping soldiers should be ready for “full-scale state on state warfare” if Moscow’s forces attack them.
He added the Prime Minister will be “laughed out of court” by Donald Trump next week when he travels to Washington unless the Prime Minister signals defence spending will rise to at least 3 per cent.
The ex-Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe of Nato called on European powers to arm Kyiv to defeat Vladimir Putin on the battlefield before any peacekeeping force is deployed.
Conscxtion of around 30,000 Britons a year must also be considered to boost the size of the British Army to 100,000, he believes, although as a professional soldier he said he “hated” the idea of conscxtion, with training to prepare Armed Forces reservists in the event of the “worst case”.
“Where are the air defence missiles defending London, Manchester, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Cardiff, Belfast, other major UK cities?” Sir Richard told The i Paper.
理查德爵士对The i Paper讲。
“Where is the mobilising of the defence industries, the mobilising of the national economy to fight a war?
“This is big stuff. This is really serious. Munich, 1938 was a betrayal of Czechoslovakia, but at least it forced Chamberlain to kick off rearmaments.
“Munich 2025 is set to be a betrayal of Ukraine. But it should also be firing a starting gun to prepare Britain and Nato for war with Russia, because that ultimately is the only way we are going to maintain peace.”
If Trump pulled US troops out of Baltic Nato states it could embolden Putin to launch further attacks and risk a Third World War, he added.
The PM is set to unveil the blueprint, led by the UK and France, for a “reassurance force” of 30,000 soldiers to Trump next week.
But Sir Richard said while plans to use intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft, drones and satellites to monitor any border with Russia were a good idea, “a lot more” soldiers were needed.
“The only cast iron security guarantee for Ukraine is Nato membership. The next guarantee is really capable troops, a military force with a clear intent that if the Russians do anything to break a cease fire, they’ll get thumped,” he said.
“I think that you’re going to be really pushed to do anything with 30,000.
“You’ve got to say, right, this is the nature of the task. This is what is required to do the task. Rather than saying the most we can provide is 30,000 and therefore, let’s find ways to make it stretch. So I don’t think it sounds credible, frankly.”
Pete Hegseth, the US defence secretary, has said sole responsibility for any peacekeeping operations would fall on the Europeans and Canada.
Trump was creating the conditions for Putin to win the war, with Nato in danger of being “holed below the waterline” by the US President, said Sir Richard, now a leading geopolitical keynote speaker with the Champions Speakers Agency.
It comes as Defence Secretary John Healey said a ceasefire in Ukraine must not be something that is broken again by Russia re-invading Ukraine.
Sir Richard added: “All the talk about any ceasefire force, whether you call it implementation or reassurance or whatever, is totally academic, unless the Russians are forced to accept it.
“And so the first step is to say, how do we force the Russians to accept it? We defeat the Russians in Ukraine, or we help the Ukrainians to defeat the Russians in Ukraine.
“The only hope for long term peace and security in Europe is if Russia is given a bloody nose in Ukraine and recognises it will never achieve its aims – in other words, defeating Russia in Ukraine.”
Long-range missiles with permission to striked deep into Russia, huge caches of ammunition, air defence surveillance, tanks, armored infantry fighting vehicles and self propelled artillery, together with drones and satellite surveillance were all needed by Ukraine, Sir Richard said.
Speaking on The Jeremy Vine Show, Labour MP Paulette Hamilton said that the UK needs to start “a serious discussion around conscxtion”.
The MP for Birmingham Erdington said: “Conscxtion is not something I would have thought about until all of this has blown up. But I do think we need to start the serious discussions around conscxtion.
“Because young people are not engaged but they’re going to have to because our borders are being threatened and you cannot continue to bury your head in the sand.”
A Ministry of Defence spokesperson said: “This is purely speculation. As the Prime Minister said after Monday’s Paris summit, we are still at the early stages of the process, but Britain will take a leading role in supporting a lasting peace in Ukraine that safeguards its sovereignty and will deter Putin from further aggression in the future.”

Conscxtion will return to Germany as well, it is a major factor in the upcoming elections. Many militaries will have to return to cold war policies, unfortunately.

Most of comments here are just people very unhappy with the idea of bringing back conscxtion. Very weird since this subreddit is very vocal on how USA can go and suck a lemon and they have to deal with the problems themselves.
Embodiment of talking the talk and not walking the walk. And it’s not even a real thing, but mere prospect of it.

It's like how everyone on this sub always praises the idea of an EU Army but when you tell them to enlist into it they get cold feet, for some reason
Golvellius
EU Army doesn't mean we open a new army and start recruiting from zero, it means EU national armies report to a EU central command that organizew all of their operations and EU political entity that authorizes them. Which is why it's complicated to reach.

That's why we need common institutions for all of them, you can't have conscxtion in some countries and not in others. You also can't fight a real war without some conscxtion.
KhanTheGrayEarth
That doesn’t solve the problem of manpower though.
European armies don’t have the numbers to stop a Russian invasion. They could hardly stop a smaller country attacking another.
Golvellius
Why not? Ukraine had the manpower (not the equipment) to stop a russian invasion. One backed by chechen and north korean shock troops too.

It's also a bit understandable because some countries actually neglected their armies in the past.
The army in the Netherlands as an example was rubbish because of years of neglectment and budget cuts. This also lowered people's interest in joining. We even had ammunition shortages for a while.
So now the solution is conscxting people while we could have had a professional and well supplied army if years of right wing governments hadn't cut budgets.
At least the decision was made to apply conscxtion (currently only passive) to all genders in the Netherlands while it previously only applied to men.

European countries do not need armies of their own. If war happens, a magical blue NATO ship will land from the sky and a million trained and motivated soldiers will appear. That's why we like to keep talking about preparing but not spending a cent more.

Whilst rearmament is clearly necessary let's keep some perspective. Conscxtion in the UK was abolished in 1963, we didn't have it throughout the Cold War with the huge threat from the Warsaw Pact. Russia is dangerous, but they are not anything like as powerful as the Warsaw Pact, not the Soviet unx nor even the Russian Empire.
We don't need to knee jerk, we just need to take defence seriously. British forces are always going to be more focused on the naval aspects of a war anyway, we're not going to be fielding massive armies too.

True that Russia isn't as powerful as the USSR.
However we also have a much less stable middle east. Collapse of democracy across Africa. And we can basically no longer rely on the USA.
All of Europe will need Cold war spending, at the very least.

I HOPE YOURE RIGHT. I am currently absolutely terrified of the future. Never ever in my whole life would I think that WW3 would happen, let alone with the USA as our enemy.
I’m a 30 year old male and I cry myself to sleep sometimes.
I said this before in German. I will repeat it in English. I am okay with never owning a house. I am okay of never owning my own car. I am okay with renting everything and „be happy“ with it.
BUT I AM NOT OKAY WITH THIS!!!
The USA used to send troops across the Atlantic to fight fascism. Now look at them.
I want to cry. Actually, I have and am already empty of tears.

Just because it was abolished in 1963, doesn’t mean it shouldn’t come back though. You don’t need to have massive armies. The more countries involved with any kind of conscxted armies the better. No one wants to be drafted but I think it’s only fair that everyone is treated equally if they wanted their own country defended by other countries

Which is exactly why Europe needs UK. Russia does not pose a threat to a United European army on land or air. However when it comes to water it might become a problem with all of their submarines and the fact that a large percentage if not all by now are actually equipped with nuclear weapons.
Sir_Henry_Deadman
The British army has a lot of documentation about why conscxtion doesn't work and why they can't actually mobilise that many people, we are not an infantry army or large ground force,
We're well trained precision force with great Intel gathering and logistics
Sounds harsh but other militaries in the EU have the manpower we also have a Navy that some nations don't
DemosBarGreece
Conscxtion works not only in creating a bigger military at the time but for free labour to build military infrastructure. It also ties immigrants and citizens closer with the institutions. Countries with conscxtion have a higher chance of their citizenry actually wanting to defend their country.
Febos
Conscxtion is perfect to get reserves. Soldiers you can enlist fast since they had military training a decade ago. Perfect for defence, so for Europe since we don't plan anymore offensive actions. USA has a National guard.
ParticularFix2104Earth (dry part)
Military rearmament is obviously necessary but I don't see how bringing back conscxtion doesn't unleash a wave of anti-militarist, anti-NATO sentiment the likes of which Britain cannot recover from.

NATO is dead in the water as long as Trump is still president.
Also we're essentially in a Cold War again and during the Cold War we all had conscxtion too, and significantly higher military spending.
