But why does it seem that India's tourism industry is not as prosperous as that of Thailand, Indonesia, Japan and other countries? Bali and Phuket are well-known to the world, but India lacks such natural landmark tourist attractions (the Taj Mahal is a cultural attraction). China has recently introduced a 144-hour transit policy, attracting many foreign tourists. Can India follow suit?

Indians don’t live in fear that they’ll get murdered for being Indian (in the US people just generally live in fear that they’ll get murdered in a random mass shooting massacre). Women/Dalits in India do live in fear though, that they’ll get raped and murdered for being who they are. Not well connected people do live in fear that unless they conform to what their local politician is asking, they’ll get beaten to death. The police force is a joke, even worse than the US. Don’t put any country up in a pedestal, not even your own. Try to change it for better instead.

The percentage of Indians getting assaulted in the US is much much much lesser than foreigners getting assaulted in India.

I live in Toronto and a woman can walk naked at 3am here all through the town and be completely safe. Some people might look surprised but nobody will stare. Most people will just look away.
Meanwhile, if you try walking with normal clothes in Delhi and gurgaon, you are more likely to be harassed or assaulted.
Only people who have never stepped foot outside India use your argument of "crime is everywhere". Travel once. You'll stop using that argument.

I'm an American who's been to India multiple times and has much love for the country. I'd say if India could do a few things, it would probably boost the tourism industry a lot:
improve roads and infrastructure
get trash out of the roads/waterways
make it culturally and legally not worth it for men to be creeps to women
Easier said than done, but societies have made these kinds of improvements before.

I’m an American staying in India. It really is a lovely place and I think all three of these are good suggestion. Id just reverse the order. First address the creepiness, then the trash, then the infrastructure.
I can see people coming to India more even with poor infrastructure so long as people feel safe, but nobody will care how nice roads are if people feel creeped out.

Anecdote, I went up to Manali and it was stunning - absolutely gorgeous. One of the best places I've ever seen. You know what I saw? Indians throwing their plates on the ground or outside their cars.
You know what else I saw - as a man - nothing but groups of men. Just groups of men walking around. Maybe one guy might have a girlfriend that accompanied them but mostly....just groups of guys.
Even if it was Europe, Thailand or wherever else - if all you see is guys, you feel kind of threatened because if something happens then everyone falls down like dominos.

The vast majority of travellers aren't women though. So that point is mostly irrelevant for most travellers.

Did you miss the part where I said as a man? Men also go on holidays by themselves and aren't always looking for cheap sex or hookers or whatever.
I was in Chiang Mai and I saw a group of loud obnoxious Australians invade the swimming pool and scare off two young Chinese women.
So...like I said, I think groups of men can be considered threatening and in India where they just stare and they come up to you to touch your hair etc, people don't know what to make of it and tell their friends when they get back home in return double think their holiday plans.
But main things are pollution, slums, how easy easy it is to get around etc. India is not even friendly to travel around for Indians man.
And do you have evidence to back up your claim that the vast majority of travellers aren't women? Nearly every woman I know has taken a holiday by herself with her friends.

Only places that are unsafe for women have less women like Egypt, India, Pakistan etc.

No idea why Westerners care so much about our street food. Street food vendors are literally those people that couldn't find any other type of earning source and don't have the resources to open an actual restaurant. Obviously their food would be low quality and unhealthy lol.

Street food is always cheaper in most countries but most places have better hygiene standards and get routinely inspected by food and sanitation inspectors. You can comfortably eat food at food stalls and trucks in developed countries without worries of getting sick.
In India, there is no checking, no care, and much corruption. This means that most street vendors couldn't care less about hygiene and will often use dirty water and dirty ingredients.
Plus they will often set up shop next to a dirty, dusty road or an open sewer. There is just no consideration for hygiene.

Westerners visiting Asia(China, Japan, South Korea, India, etc)are more likely to encounter and buy street food because it is more accessible than restaurant food because they can see what is being cooked.
If I dropped an Indian onto the streets of China, I guarantee none of em would go into a sit down restaurant, decifer the menu, and choose a meal they have never bought before. Also the portion sizes of street food are reasonable for one person compared to a restaurant. They would rather try multiple different foods from street stalls than one ethnic dish.

I absolutely hate why people keep bringing our 'long and glorious' history especially for tourism purposes. What has the history brought? What has been preserved and where is the infrastructure? You can just claim Varanasi as the oldest city, apart from the fact that literally subhumans definitely live there.
