Once again Hollywood proves that whitewashing is 100% OK, so long as the target is Asian, specifically Chinese:
Netflix’s Three-Body Problem, a story about Chinese people that takes place in China, now a story about white people taking place in the West.
In case you need me to spell it out for you:
Original story is about white men => Put a black chick in it and make it gay and lame.
Original story is about Chinese people => Make everyone white
Honestly, the most surprising thing about this Netflix “adaptation” is that the token Asian character is a guy, not a girl, for once.

Hollywood bought the rights to remake Hi Mom. A super popular Chinese movie by a female director in 2021. Think it was the highest grossing film by a first time director as well. You can watch the Chinese TV series of Three Body Problem on You tube. However it’s really not suitable for western consumption. Even Wandering Earth with its big budget special effects is not catered to western taste. I find it funny how both Chinese and Americans dissed Great Wall because it’s Matt Damon coming to the rescue of a female Chinese warrior. In the end Movies are there to make profits so it’s the audience they are selling to. Very few can make money AND promote a non mainstream message.

I enjoyed both wandering earth movies, because I like the message of international cooperation they have, better than the “Americans saving the world” tropes of Hollywood. But maybe it's living in China 10 years that made me more receptive to Chinese style cinema! There are many Chinese movies I loved, and hardly any I could share with my relatives back in France…

I thought the French original was much funnier and a cut above than the American version, but there is no way a movie in French with action taking place in France with unknown French actors would be a success in the US.
The American producers wisely chose to adapt the movie for local audiences with big name stars: handsome Tom Selleck and Steve Guttenberg.
The same goes for the Three Body Problem. Yes, the novel involves Chinese people in China, but Hollywood decided (rightly or wrongly) that most American audiences are not ready for a movie like this with a mostly Chinese cast. The key consideration is making money; I don’t doubt that a degree of racism might be involved in the casting decisions, but that was probably not the main factor.
//Original story is about Chinese people => Make everyone white//
Not exactly. This is what replacing the Chinese with everyone else. It is very naive to think Netflix will promote the White race in anyway. They promote America and the West. But not the white race. I would like to see some evidence If they have done such a thing.
//原始故事是关于中国人的改编成 => 让所有人都变成白人。//
White man → Black woman

Did you not watch the trailer? All the characters are white, except the one Asian guy.
Main character Eiza Gonzalez is a Latina.
And they have black and Pakistanis.
That Chinese guy at the beginning of the film came from Salford Manchester, less than a mile from where I live in Prestwich, predominantly a Jewish area( most of my neighbours are Jewish)
I think is more about Chinese in general. A lot of Korean series use only Korean and the same with Japanese.
Is sad considering the author is Chinese and the only Asian guy in it is Korean…. I think is pretty evident the racism and discrimination towards Chinese.
They’re making a three body series adaption?
I hope they don’t ruin it, one of the best sci-fis out there and one of the only to receive a noble prize(albiet, maybe for political reasons). It’s a pretty good book.
Probably the only way that they could sell a Chinese story to an American audience. But to be fair, any American remake or adaptation has to take place in the US, wherever the original story was supposed to take place.
Everyone knows the planet of the apes. How many know it was originally a French book, and that instead of the statue of liberty, it's the Eiffel tower they find at the end? If the Netflix adaptation of the three body problem is successful, an entire generation might believe it's an American story too.
Not familiar with this particular film, but the entertainment industry in America is infamous (even amongst Americans) for whitewashing characters of all non-Caucasian origins. It’s not like they are picking on the Chinese. I suspect the lack of diversity amongst accomplished actors in American entertainment is largely responsible, which in turn encourages a lack of diversity in actors.

They do that with lots of asian movies in general, be it japanese, korean, thai or Chinese.
It won’t “sell” if it is asians on screen... It’ll sell better if it’s white/black actors, and even better if the actors are famous, contrarily to local asian actors which are only known in their country for most of them.
Also asian movies usually have lots of cultural details that western audience won’t understand, especially when it comes to local superstitious beliefs.
Well… if to begin with they didn’t start that trend of white washing asian movies back then, a lot of those asian actors would’ve come to be known, as well as the various asian culture specificities… and by now the asia-wood microcosm would be much well known to the western public… but would also compete with holywood, which is a very bad thing…
And the american public would also see how there are so many bad scenario authors these days….
It won’t “sell” if it is asians on screen... It’ll sell better if it’s white/black actors, and even better if the actors are famous, contrarily to local asian actors which are only known in their country for most of them.
Buddy, it’s 2024. If Hollywood still cared about money, then they’d stop putting ugly black women in every Disney movie.
These days it’s all about “racial justice” and DEI. No one cares about cash anymore. Look at what they’re doing with Star Wars AKA Vagina Wars. They lost a ton of money on their shitty woke pandering Star Wars movie, so they double down and hire a Pakistani feminist to direct more woke pandering Star Wars movies. The goal now is to lose money, not make it.
But Asians are part of DEI, and Chinese get negative DEI. So whitewashing Asians is a matter of moral rectitude.

Lastly, your premise isn’t even true.

Oh I do know some asian movies are getting out in western countries, and the white-washed ones also have their original sold in western countries.
But let’s be honest, it still stays a relatively niche market.
Many white washed asian film got exposure due to the success of the white washed counterpart.
Also I was talking about 100% asian films, made in asia - Crazy Rich Asians is an american produced film.
For example, The Wandering Earth made litteraly all its money from China ($700M), it only made $6M in the USA and $1.5M in the rest of the world…
But production quality, sfx, acting and all, it is just as good as any holywood film.
But all in all, I don’t really think it’s racism - like racial hate.
It’s more about making it easier for the audience to project itself into the characters and relate to them, which is facilitated if the actors are racially the same as well as the geographical/cultural setting.
Yeah, I still remember how they got rid of the Asian MIT students for the movie 21 which was based off a real story. I guess Asian men need to be like all these whiners who complain about movies like The Little Mermaid.
