I can't neutrally judge which country's historical drama is better, there are a thousand Hamlets for a thousand people.
But one thing I can confirm is that the diversity and richness of Chinese historical dramas cannot be compared with Japan and South Korea.
Generally speaking, all historical dramas in Japan look similar to historical dramas with the background of the Tang Dynasty in China.

However, China has more than a dozen different dynasties, and their cultural styles, architecture, and clothing are completely different. The richness of China is beyond the reach of Japan and South Korea.
Look at these:
This is a costume drama with the background of the xia Dynasty, 4000 years ago
This is a costume drama with the background of the Shang Dynasty, 3000 years ago, the golden bronze armor
2,200 years ago, the costume drama of the Qin Empire, these soldiers are exactly the same as the Terracotta Army of Qin Shihuang
1800 years ago, the Han Empire. General of the Han Dynasty played by Jack Chen
1600 years ago, the Three Kingdoms period. famous three brothers
1500 years ago, stills from the Sui Empire period. unreliable emperor
1300 years ago, a costume drama of the Tang Empire. gorgeous clothes, gorgeous times
1000 years ago, a costume drama set in the Song Dynasty. Clothing becomes elegant and restrained
600 years ago, the background of the Yuan Dynasty. Actors wear two braids, which is a Mongolian custom
400 years ago, a costume drama of the Ming Empire. The bright colors of clothing are back again, the age of self-confidence. Zheng He's Great Voyages
300 years ago, during the Qing Dynasty. Manchu hats and hairstyles
100 years ago, the Republic of China was established. At this time, the costume drama, the ladies wear cheongsam

I love it all whether it is Korean, Japanese or Chinese. The Chinese drama is strong on plots while Korean drama excels on strong character development. I would agree there is far more variety of styles in Chinese since it has such a long history compared to the other two nations. The Chinese productions are visually stunning and the music well blended. These productions tend to run longer and are extremely immersive. As of now Western entertainment is in a big creative slump, so I and other people in the West are more motivated to watch productions from East Asia now they are so abundant on streaming services. The discovery has enriched my life and helped open my eyes more to the world around me.
Thanks for sharing these photos and the captions. It does help make sense of it all.

I remember as a small child in Hong Kong in the 1950s (yes, I’m that old now 75) and even as a young adult in the US watching historical movies from Hong Kong and Taiwan and feeling unsatisfied that the sets, costumes, and scenery all looked the same, probably due to budgetary and locale constraints and a lack of seriousness of the movie makers.
One of the cultural contributions of the PRC that I haven’t heard too much comment( maybe there are but I just haven’t paid attention) are the historical dramas sine the 1990s that have tapped into the true richness and diversity of China’s historical past. To me, it all started when a dear old professor from Shanghai who has since passed away recommended that I watch the TV series 唐明皇which I thoroughly enjoyed. That was around the year 2000. I’ve since seen quite a few historical movies and TV series that have expanded my view of different periods of the Chinese past. I think the movie industry in China has a unparalleled advantage compared to that of Hong Kong and Taiwan in being immersed in the historical legacy rather than imagining it from one’s mind or books. I also think that’s why Western movies set in Chins also tend to be stilted and stereotypic. When I was growing up in Denver Colorado in the 60s my parents would take my brother and me to movies that portrayed China but then afterwards they’d complain about how bad they were. I especially remember the General who died at dawn, a movie with Gary cooper(?) and a Chinese warlord who was played by a local Chinese American and spoke in Cantonese! When a soldier spilt tea on the general’s clothes, the general told him to “da say gee gay’” 打死自己!go shoot yourself! I was just 10 years old but even I knew that wasn’t right;-)

封神榜 relates to the era of late Shang/early Zhou which came after the xia dynasty. In fact, so little is known about the xia I doubt enough material could be gathered to make a drama (not a lot is known about the Shang either except for that 封神榜 part, and it’s mostly a legend).

It's kinda like films on Roman empire, medi Europe, post reformation Europe, American colony, industrial revolution, and modern times.
All different countries, but same amount of time nevertheless.
The 1800s and 1900s were so vastly different that there was a huge generational gap, with each generation having unique cultures.

I highly recommend Empresses in the Palace and Scarlet Heart(2011). This Scarlet Heart should be the Chinese one, it is not to be confused with the Korean adaptation called Scarlet Heart Ryo which is not the original. Empresses in the Palace and Scarlet Heart of 2011 are one of the most classic period dramas that won everyone’s heart when it came out.
For a more recent one, I highly recommend The Untamed.

I mean the clothes are gorgeous, but that’s just one aspect, isn’t it? Production value, acting, fight scenes (if there is any), plots (from what I understand China and Japan have historical periods that would make Game of Thrones look like a walk in a park /I would also assume that Korea have one as well/). How do they compare?

Partially agreed. I think it isn't fair, kinda comparison of apples and oranges.
Let's change the question to be more specific and less biased:
Among China, Korea and Japan, which historical drama achieved international awards and highly praised the most?
Do you think the answer is Chinese drama? I highly doubt.

Honestly Chinese dramas mostly aren't targeted for international audiences and the storylines are strange, uncommon or unfamiliar for us foreigners.
Meanwhile Korean dramas adapted for international audiences and Japanese dramas are very distinctive but in general they have universal storylines accepted for international audiences (for example the popularity of Oshin). Ask your parents about Japanese drama titled Oshin and what their impression of it.

I am a lover of East Asian history
It is undeniable that China, South Korea and Japan both have ancient histories.
However, China has a long history and rich content that is unmatched by other countries. Both Korea and Japan have very short histories that can be recounted in detail; most of their histories are legends or fragments of Chinese history.
Therefore, the Chinese can make up an infinite number of stories by picking just a little bit from their vast history. This is something that Koreans and Japanese cannot do.
