It's a bit of a back and forth, tbh. Boys were also historically more likely to die in infancy since they tend to be weaker and more prone to disease than girls during that period of development. Since infant mortality used to be a massive problem in the past but is fairly rare now it's pretty likely that we have a much higher male to female ratio than we had historically, especially among young people.

I have to be clear, this isn't widespread given the size of the population in India. Most parents would never do that. But there are sad and extremely impoverished situations that make people desperate.
Sometimes these kids have no parents, or 'work' for others collecting any coins they can get. I've also seen kids with limbs that were bound constantly, resulting in malformed bodies. Some were blinded.
Even worse is that there is little you can do directly to help. Giving them money encourages the abusive behaviour.

I'm Indian so probably biased, but there are certain places in India worth exploring just for the sights/food/festivals/etc. Celebrations are wild. Travel with a local guide you trust (or an Indian friend) to show you around, keep you out of trouble, and prevent you avoid from getting overcharged/scammed. Wear clothing that helps you and your wife blend in instead of sticking out...this is a good idea anywhere you go. India is generally a safe country to visit, and among developing countries the crime rate is one of the lowest.
The vast majority of the public you encounter will be polite and helpful, and you'll often be offered tea/food/etc by people you visit. It's completely normal to pull over and yell out at any random passerby for directions. There's a strong cultural etiquette, deep traditions, and families stick together. These kinds of things make for an interesting trip.
