There was a mini series on him on television.I know he is widely admired in China . Most Canadians do not know about him.

I think it depends on your age and whether he was discussed in school. If you graduated before 2000 Communism was the great story of our day and his would come up. After 2001 the world started looking at other conflicts.

Yes Im aware of him. I'm not Chinese and grew up in Saskatchewan of Ukrainian descent. During the late 1970s and 1980s he was moderately well known by the Canadian general public and mentioned in the media from time to time because the Chinese cultural revolution had ended and China was opening up to the world. He was used as a bit of a symbolic cultural ambassador/bridge for both governments as relations were thawing. As I recall a movie was even made about him that starred Donald Sutherland.

I know a fair bit about Bethune or Bai Qui en as my mother’s good friend lived at the Gravenhurst home for some time before it was made into a public museum and wrote the initial materials used as pamphlets and displays for the public there (at the time he was working on his PhD).

Bethune is much better known for his work in China, by the Chinese, than he's ever been in Canada. Prior to my first visit to China, I was aware of him, but after being asked about him, and hearing him mentioned multiple times in the first few days in the country, I was determined to learn more when I got home.
