I lived in Korea for a couple of months, and yes it is true that many things are expensive in the country, but many Korean people are obsessed with luxury. Koreans often complained about inflation, salaries, and house prices. Still, they spent a lot of their money on eating out in fancy, trendy places, buying expensive clothes, and keeping that lifestyle even if there were less costly options, no wonder they couldn't save money.

manonn2006 this doesn’t happen only in Korea. It also happens in Europe, not to mention the USA, where many people live paycheck to paycheck and max out their credit cards.

Put ourselves in their shoes. These young adults (Gen Z especially) know for sure they will never ever be able to buy a house although they save money for whole life. The property price is just too high & unreachable. Because of this reality, they believe it is useless to save money to buy a house. They spend their money for experiences such as travelling, fancy dinings, etc etc. This happens in South Korea, Japan & China.

This is true for many people who live in some countries in Europe.My friends go on atleast three holidays, buy unnecessary things , have hundreds pairs of shoes, forever buying clothing to throw out the next season , clubbing on weekends and eat out or oder food. I managed with my loan to build a house but I also haved not gone on holidays for ten years.

i don't understand something. They all complan about high rents, but nobody is willing to take a bank loan for 30 years like we in Europe do, buy a flat with it. This means no luxury spending but at least you have your own house and don't need to pay rent to others.

@NuclearChild_ Life in Europe is so boring for young people compared to life in Asia. There are so many entertaintment in Asia for young people, life is more exciting. Also....young people in Asia are more fashionable than young people in Europe. They spend a lot of money to be fashionable. You can come to South Korea, Japan or China, and you will see what I mean.

@brianmansan nobody can buy house or flat only by saving, that's mission impossible. That's why we take bank loans. It means a lot of sacrifice for 20, 30 years, but if you start earlier you will own your home earlier. 20 years pass very fast. People usually pay off loan with only two incomes (much smaller than average incomes in rich Korea) , without living with parents and splitting costs like Koreans do. I think that Koreans are basically parasiting on parents, living hedonistic irresponsible life.

@NuclearChild_ Every person has his/her own thinking & belief. This is not about right or wrong. Many foreigners often misunderstand Korea & its people. Many think Koreans are addicted to plastic surgery because they want to look beautiful & handsome, that is just one side of story. By having good appeaeance, it also boosts their chance to get employment. Unlike in Europe....competition in Asia, especially in East Asia, is extremely extremely tight. So if you don't stand out among the crowd....there is a small chance for you to get sexted. This is more like they NEED to have plastic surgery rather than they WANT to have one. And plastic surgery surely cost a lot of money. So they live in dilemma.

@NuclearChild_ I'm a westerner living in Korea and recently bought an apartment. I don't think Koreans can simply get a 20-30 year loan. When I bought my place 2 years ago, the government required you to have 60% of the total apartment price, meaning the bank would only loan a max of 40% as mortgage.

@NuclearChild_ the problem is even if you loan it's still not enough. The maximum I can loan is 4B won. The average price of the house is 10B won.

as someone who's from the Netherlands and who lives in Korea, apartment prices are crazy. For a place of 84m2, which is still considered small in my country (although you get 2 bathrooms here haha), where I live it starts at 1 million USD

Near Seoul is much cheaper. The place they said is the center of Seoul

@user-fz6hz3uc9x I live in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi-do and it's similar prices but that's because it's 10 min from Seoul.If you move further away then it gets cheaper yes.

It is this bad also in the Netherlands though. All major cities have a housing crisis. And 84m2 is not considered small anymore in the cities. Of course, in the smaller towns, you can buy a bigger house for the same price.

If you look outside of Seoul, the housing prices are dirt cheap compared to Seoul. You can get much newer bigger places for $200K to $300K that you can't get in Seoul. The problem is that everyone wants to live in Seoul, so those cities are slowly dying. Pretty soon, Korea will only have Seoul as a big city, the rest of the country will be in a state of shock after the demographic bomb explosion. Even in Seoul, the home prices have halved compared to a couple of years ago. In 5 years, the home prices will have crashed totally, and pretty much you won't find any people complaining about the home prices anymore. The problem is the economy will be so bad that they still wouldn't be able to afford Seoul house prices. But rents in Seoul are not high. Right now you can rent clean, big, apartments for $700 a month in Seould.
