As an US citizen who has lived abroad, yes this seems pretty accurate to me. Only Americans who have spent their whole lives in the US think the US is safe.

Finally someone who admits it. The US has problems like every other country in the world, unfortunately these problems seem to be taken as something natural, which is why improvements never come. Which is frustrating when the country has the potential to be so much better.

Its funny that 99.9% American thing their country is safer then my country Serbia..but in reality like here underage girls can go out alone in night and walk alone home in night and nothing will happen to them. Its totaly normal and everyone does it ..in USA parents would totaly freak out.

As an American who's traveled across much of Europe, this ranking definitely makes sense.
I remember being on a tour in Switzerland which ended at lake Zurich. There was a lot of American backpackers with us, and they wanted to explore the city, and swim in the lake. Our tour guide was very insistent that they could just leave all their stuff on the shore, and promised no one would take their stuff. That seemed to be a difficult concept for some of them to understand. But she ended up being right.

@Brian Grogan What all these European countries would do? They will probably upgrade the military capabilities of the EU and the EU will lead the new NATO-without-the-US. Their own military complex will fill the empty space left by the US military complex in Europe. On one hand, it will be more difficult to protect the common interests they have with the US worldwide (and Russia, China, etc... will suddenly be more powerful and influential), on the other hand, Europe itself will gain more power and influence (and could define their own strategic goals without interference from the US.)

As European I traveled to American countries from Argentina, Brasil to the US and Canada. Canada is as safe as Europe. Of all countries in America Brazil was the least safe and most contradictory was the USA, some areas safe same as Europe, e.g. Maine, but some like being in the most dangerous war zones and I was adviced by locals to not enter there.

What really sets Botswana apart though? Why is Africa so war ridden? That continent has so many resources that if countries could stop having conflict they'd become richer and more prosperous.

Here in the US, a lot of Americans see Brazil as a corrupt, crime ridden country and this is a stereotype that extends to most of South America. But the US is a mere 1 rank above Brazil, and there are a number of South American countries above the US, like Uruguay.

Very surprised to see that Haiti didn’t make it to the list of least safe countries, considering recent events.

I also live in Japan and am surprised Japan is not 1 or 2. It's incredibly safe here. Crime is low and one's chances of being "mugged" are almost nil. However, when I heard the more detailed explanation I thought that because some minorities are discriminated against, gay marriage is illegal here and Japan has the death penalty these factors may slightly lower Japan's score.
