Follow Studied and worked in China for 8 years6y
As a foreigner living in China for almost 9 years and have 2 family members that lived in Japan for more than 10 years, I would personally say its better to live in China especially in the “Future”.
China
1. Development: Rapid development economically over the last 20 years is unprecedented and will continue to develop in the years to come.

3. Safety: I stayed in a tier 2 and 3 city after my college years in China (Xiamen and Longyan), walking and listening to my headphones at 2am in the night and never had anything happen.
4. Work: If you want to fully grab high paying working opportunities you must learn the local language. All in all working opportunities in China is broad and you will get better offers as you learn Chinese, and being a foreigner is a plus!
5. Transportation: While it is truly chaos when it comes to Chinese transportation, it is a very efficient one, getting to one city to another offers a lot of choices from expensive (plane) to cheap (train/bus) and its all very convenient!
1Japan Did develop fast in the same moment in their development before. It’s easier playing catch up than to be the leader as you can’t learn from others. That is why all the developed economies grow more slowly.
2 If the country is developing very fast the prices will go up too.
3Same as in Japan + better medical service in Japan
4So the same as Japan
5Not as efficent as Japan which probably has one of the better systems in the world.
China produced the most new advanced technologies in the past year. They are not just catching up.
Even the prices will go up, will be noway close to Japan. As an Island country, Japan really lack of resources. When China can at least produce most their need in their own land.
Safe is safe, no comparison needed.
China has way more opportunities compare to Japan.
You are so wrong here, nowadays, transportation technologies in China are much more advanced than Japan. If you compare Tokyo and Shanghai, I’d vote Shanghai.
Overall, China still suffering environmental issues which will be the biggest downvote for living in China. Besides that, Japan will be not even close to China in the future in every aspect. Tier 1 Cities in China are already in developed countries level. However, if they are going to keep developing the entire countries in the future, there is still huge potential and tons of opportunities in China.
But Build quality is still not there. For quality manufacturing all the world still chooses Taiwan over mainland. Also any data to support your claim? I know many new tech Chinese companies but very few products I would actually want to own. For now you are basically Japan in the 70s. World leaders in tech and economy slow their growth because they can't learn from others
Prices in big cities in China start going up when living in them becomes more attractive.
Here I agree. There might be more opportunities. It is easier to find a great position in China and there are better development prospects.
You are completely wrong and it shows by saying “transportation systems are so advanced”. Technology doesn’t make a good public transportation system. Organisation does. Look at Switzerland praised for one of the most efficent rail systems in the world. Their trains aren’t the newest ones but they are well organized, maintained and clean.
i dont think the reason the slow growth is that they can’t learn from others. Developed countries don’t grow as much becase they are already developed enough there is nothing else to develop.
DJI, nothing in Japan compares
China is incredibly cheap since its a developing country, its an outlier though in that it has first world infrastructure in many of its cities
Japan is slightly safer than China but both are significantly safer than the west
Not “might” there is far more opportunities in China than in Japan
Chinese maintenance of infrastructure is better than most western countries especially countries like America and Australia.
DJI what?
Sorry but you missed my point. Yeah China is cheap but for some companies not cheap enough since wages are going up. I know of many companies who went to other countries for that since it’s not AS CHEAP AS BEFORE
China is no safer than the West as a whole. US may be but not EU. EU is super safe.
Again hard to judge without data. Chinese infrastructure is new so it’s hard to judge how well its maintained. Real tests will come in the coming years.
I used DJI as an example to counter your first point that China can’t build products of high quality which is obviously false.
My apologies, I thought you meant cost of living for civilians and wages are indeed increasing very fast.
When I said that China was safer than the West what I really meant was that China as a whole is safer than the West, of course individual European states MAY be safer again.
China invests massively into upgrading and building new infrastructure, no Western country even compares, maybe Japan or South Korea might compare but I am unsure.
Transportation is way behind Japan. I’m a second generation American living in Hawaii with 28 years flying for the USAF. Been to China once in 1980(?)I’m aware of the rapid development in some areas but the rest of the country is way behind.
1980? That was before I was born… I still remember when I was a kid, my father bought a TV, I showed off to all my friends, as it was the first one in the whole village. And that was in late 1980s, and nobody ever expected they would own a car. Now every family has a car.

China has High Speed Railway network of 29000km, longer than all the other countries’ combined.
Norbert, Warren Sy is a foreigner and he has lived in China for some years. Also he mentioned he has family members live in Japan. In addition, the question is “in the future….” I think what he says has some neutrality. So he tells people that China can provide a better living in the future. He is entitled to his opinion.
Based on the current development in China, many things are going where the citizens want, despite that there are some areas lacking. The air pollution is media overblow. You want cleaner air, you can go to Qinghai or Yunnan.
Japan has one of the highest suicide rates in the world. Also, corporate employees are often worked to death that result from Karoshi, a unique Japanese phenomenon.
He is entitled to his opinion, but the evidence that he provides doesn’t really support the argument that China will surpass Japan in standards of living.
Suicide rates in China is lower than Japan, but the difference really isn’t that drastic. And death from overwork is not a uniquely Japanese phenomenon, but more of a general East Asian one; instances of it are reported also in South Korea and China.

China has surpassed Japan in the standards of living in some areas already. China is now full of entrepreneurial opportunities for young college graduates. The same cannot be said for Japan whose college graduates are often hired as temps. Most of all, Japan is a defeated nation, a vassal state of the US. Whatever she wants to do, it needs to be approved by her American Uncle first.
He is right. Now China is a developing country and there are many gaps between China and Japan. But China is a country with a larger area and a larger population, and Japan's future can't match China's. Japan did not surpass the United States because it could not compare its land and population.

China's air and water is much more polluted than Japan's. China's food is delicious but much less safe than Japan's. And China's transit system is much more chaotic and less developed than Japan's.
