This is Putins war, backed up by a lot of mislead (older Russians) of the Russians that do not think this way, he will arrest or posion. He has clearly robbed most Russians blind to become the richest man on the planet and he has no issues bombing Russians in the Donbas - let alone sending young Russians as cannon fodder. As for how he treats the Russian mothers of these kids - he pays them off to shut them up. (it is not a lot either) Russia is all about the "State" - the people are secondary. So - Russia has been hijaked by a mafia run criminal enterprise ruled by Don Putin - most Russians do not want this war but most are terrified, brainwashed or as extreme as Putin to do anything about it. The Russian people are victims and until they know they are victims - this wont get better, any time soon.
