I’m Vietnamese but I don’t think we are smart. Here’s why I don’t think we are smart:
1.When foreigners tell us they bought something from Vietnam, Vietnamese always say “You got ripped off, I can get it for cheaper”.
Well.. what can I say, they are duing their own products and create impression that people can spend as least as possible in Vietnam. No wonder why Vietnamese tourism ministry keeps complaining that tourists spend lower in Vietnam than other countries ($8 billion vs Thailand’s $52 billion!!! And even countries with less tourists earned more than Vietnam, for example Indonesia at $15 bln!!!). This is unlike other people who are smarter than us, for example, the Thai, they really know how to get money from tourists well.

1.当外国人告诉我们他们从越南买东西时，越南人总是说:“你被敲竹杠了，我可以用更便宜的价格买到它。”

When I was in Thailand, all vendors sold at roughly the same price. No one played dirty and went half price on the others. Even taxi drivers were consistent in the way they ripped people off. Tourists had no choice but pay for an overpriced tuk tuk. More money for Thailand.
3.Vietnamese nationalism is really stupid. It is misplaced nationalism. Does Vietnamese nationalism help Vietnamese? No not really, Vietnamese still watch Chinese movies (while protesting Chinese technology and businesses which some are good for Vietnam), drive Japanese cars, wear American brands, listen to Korean music. Meanwhile Vietnamese nationalism goes crazy and create fake news, rioting and protesting, and spreading fake news and bad mouthing Vietnamese brands (!!). Then complain why Vietnamese brands can’t grow or produce good products (!!!). Same for music and movies, always haters, then complain why Vietnam can’t produce good music.
Say they hate China but are against everything Chinese influence that is actually good for Vietnam, while watching repetitive Chinese dramas (that even the Chinese government has banned) and reading Chinese gay novels, and some are even supporting Chinese phone brands over Vietnamese ones (!!!)
2. 当卖东西的时候，越南人总是想以比竞争对手更低的价格卖出。但这会让每个人的价格都下降，每个人的利润都更低，尤其是当他们卖同样的东西时。我在泰国的时候，所有卖主的价格都差不多。没有人玩肮脏的把戏，降价到别人的一半。即使是出租车司机，他们赚钱的方式也是一致的。
游客们别无选择，只能花钱买一辆价格过高的嘟嘟车。
3.越南民族主义真的很愚蠢。这是错误的民族主义。越南民族主义对越南人有帮助吗?不，没有帮助，越南人仍然看中国电影(同时抗议中国的技术和企业，其中一些对越南有利)，开日本汽车，穿美国品牌，听韩国音乐。与此同时，越南民族主义变得疯狂，制造假新闻、骚乱和抗议，传播假新闻和诋毁越南品牌。然后抱怨为什么越南品牌不能成长或生产出好产品。音乐和电影也是一样，总是有讨厌的人，然后抱怨为什么越南不能制作出好的音乐。

5.Not accepting responsibility. Say it’s the government’s or other’s fault when it’s actually our fault. Honking on the street, littering everywhere, selling fake food, bribing traffic police, grabbing stool and running away from police when you’re not supposed to sell food on the pavement (then complain about why Vietnam is so messy, why so many vendors on pavement, no space to walk..)
6.Think everything foreigners say is right. Without questioning. Even when they wrongly criticize Vietnam.
Historically we have not been a very smart nation, actually too proud and stupid.
4.抱怨为什么基础设施和大型项目建设得不快，但当政府补偿他们时，又拒绝搬迁，即使政府给了他们一大笔钱，还给了他们一处住所。。然后抱怨为什么大项目要花这么多钱，为什么因为征地问题而拖延这么多时间。如果所有越南人都着眼大局，越南将是一个更好的地方。
5.不接受责任。说这是政府或其他人的错，其实是我们的错。在街上按喇叭，到处乱扔垃圾，卖假食品，贿赂交警，抢座位，在人行道上非法经营时，躲避警察(然后抱怨为什么越南这么乱，为什么人行道上有这么多摊贩，没有地方走)。
6.认为外国人说的一切都是对的。绝对服从，即使他们错误地批评越南。从历史上看，我们一直不是一个非常聪明的国家，实际上太骄傲和愚蠢了。
we should have opened up and learned from Western technology like what the Japanese did. Instead Vietnam closed off and became a hermit kingdom like China. Japan industrialized, while Vietnam became backward and could not fight against colonialism.
After Viernam war, we should have left the capitalist class of South Vietnam alone, instead of doing the capitalist purge.
After the Vietnam war, we shouldn’thave gone to war with China. Probably also stay out of Cambodia and focus on rebuilding the destroyed economy. We should have implemented Doi Moi and not planned economy at roughly the same time as the Chinese. This means we would have an extra decade of growth. Plus without the capitalist purge, South Vietnam’s companies and industries could have still stayed intact.
And now in the 21st century, we are still too short sighted to recognize our faults. I would say Vietnamese are not smart, we are cunning and sly. Qualities that although might seem to yield positive short term benefits, I don’t think they are positive for long term growth.
如果我们是聪明人，历史对我们来说就不会是现在的样子:
1，我们应该像日本人那样开放并学习西方技术。相反，越南封闭了自己，成为了一个像中国一样的隐士王国。日本实现了工业化，而越南则变得落后，无法反抗殖民主义。
2，越南战争结束后，我们应该对南越的资本主义阶级置之不理，而不是进行资本主义清洗。

The fact that Vietnamese are “smart”, not intelligent, make them a bunch of selfish people.
Many time I got cut ahead while queueing. I once waited in a line in the supermarket, then there was a girl, who just cut ahead of me like it’s a natural thing to do, putting her stuff on the counter. I ask her to queue like everyone else, and she said: “You’re a man, don’t act like a girl”. The sad thing is, the cashier nourish that trait by processing with her. Almost all cashiers will do that, instead of asking her to go the back of the line. That’s why Vietnamese almost never queue.
If you’re waiting for a red line at the intersection in Vietnam, you’ll notice, people will start to move when the red light has about 5 seconds left, not when it turns green. They will clump up with the people moving in the perpendicular direction, and as the result, the traffic will stuck. They’re so “smart”, so they thought they’ll be home 5 seconds faster.
At the intersection also, you can see there is a lane for people who turn right. Vietnamese will fill in that lane, they don’t give a fuck about the people who need to turn right, just to make them closer to the red light, thus they gonna be home 5 seconds earlier, ’cause they’re so smart you know. 5 seconds earlier at the cost of 90 seconds later for a dozens of people have to wait behind them.
Whenever it rains, there will be a lot of people standing under the bridge that go over a road, despite the fact that they block the traffic of the entire road. They’re smart right, that way they can stay dry. Fuck anyone who is travelling on the road.
The leaders are “smart” too. They always find a way to spend society tax money for themself, and when they step down from power, they have already got citizenship in another country and fled there with all the money they got.

Vietnam is NOT POOR. It’s all about methodology of gathering statistics.
Average American has net debt. Average Vietnamese does not. Only ‘rich’ Vietnamese have debt.
GDP per capita does not tell anything, as in Vietnam money flow is not well accounted for.
Average farmer in Vietnam earns 50,000 USD + per annum
but that is not all. For that money they can live much better than many people in Norway or Dubai.
It is such an old- dated concept of measuring wealth by dollars.
If we would measure well being instead of money, Vietnamese are at least in top 20 countries. And some indexes for that matter show that they are constantly in Top 3 of happiest countries in the world.

Because the bad education,
Vietnamese students have to study really hard but no one in the world accept that because Vietnamese education is in the wrong way. They must to study what they don’t need to study (we can’t use it in real life). For example, students need to study hard about chemistry in Secondary School and High School, but they aren’t chemist in the future. Vietnamese education teaches students to be good at Math, Physics, Chemistry,e.t.c but they didn’t care much about English. That is why Vietnamese can’t be good.
Secondly, Vietnamese who are good didn’t return to Vietnam and help Vietnam to become better,
In stead of return to help Vietnam, they stay at the place that can help them become richer and happier, like Europe or USA. Someone return to Vietnam to live with their parents or become an CEO of an company,e.t.c. Just a little Vietnamese come back to lead Vietnam to a better place. Why they care about their families, their jobs, e.t.c. but they didn’t care about their community, their country? They are not selfish, because the government didn’t want them to do that. They don’t want good Vietnamese to be in a good officials in the government. They just want their descendants to do that. But their descendants are bad! If someone want to be in government, they need to give the bribery

And when Vietnamese go to those “overseas lands”, you will quickly find that they are no different to Vietnam, and the reason they’re rich is just a result of history. You will quickly learn that Vietnamese education gives you more advantage than the laidback Western system. You will increasingly see the potential of your country.
The reason why Asia has been held back for century is due to the Western world having a head start in industrialisation. But Vietnam has just started and needs time to catch up. Look at what the West used to say about China, how its students have no creativity, how they are like robots, no social skills, no life skills, no soft skills… China will collapse. Look at China now? It is top in the innovation spectrum, its technology is sending shivers down those Old World powers’ spines. Can they say that China have no innovation now?
Everything starts slow and in bad condition but will pick up momentum when the foundation is set. But you need confidence. Confidence in your people, confidence in your culture and most importantly confidence in your country!
It’s good to receive criticisms to improve, but don’t let foreigners put your country down. Do not believe everything they say is right. You need to have your own pathway, not reliant on others to pave that path for you. That is why the Asian tigers and China succeeded, they do not wait for the Western world to tell them what and how to make their country rich. In fact they found their own pathway, and each of those received a lot of negative criticisms from the Western world. But they pushed through despite those criticisms. And that’s what Vietnam needs to do too!

That is a interesting statement that people made about Japan in the sixties and Korea in the seventies. No one calls those nation poor now. So my real question is what do you mean by “Poor”?
In my career has taken me to over a hundred nations in the world and Vietnam does not fit in that category. There are some very interesting statistics that indicate otherwise, including a lower poverty rate then in the US. Currently the economy is booming and according to some sources maybe the fastest growing economy in the world as soon as next year. Two years back when I first arrived, I counted no less than 23 cranes building skyscrapers out of my window in my downtown apartment.
Now why is it still in the development stage has more to do with war and the development of its economic style. If a nation is in a war, then it will obviously not be developing, especially if that war is in its own boarders. I am not going to comment on the development of economic styles, however the current leadership seems to be excelling at developing the economy.
So in brief, while a Doctor or another professional in Vietnam may earn several times less the income in other developed nations. Defining Vietnam as being “Poor” is certainly misguided.

To say Vietnam is so poor is not a correct statement. It is true that there is still a portion of population living in poverty, but the living standard is improving every year. But you’re right that Vietnam is not living up to its potential given the geological location, and all the natural resources available.
The problem with Vietnam is the lack of trust in the current system and in a stable future. So everyone is trying to make money as fast as possible. Everyone is for him/herself, there is no bigger picture, no common goal, only “me and my family”.
The government is trying to fix problems and gain back people’s trust, but all they are doing is patching holes in a sinking ship instead of looking for way to build a new one. Under the current system maybe that’s all they are able to do.
So what is the future of Vietnam?
We’re strong and resilient, we do what we can with what we’re given because we hate conflict. That doesn’t mean we are lazy or weak. If thing keep going as it is now, the country will reach a breaking point, and people will stand together to bring the real change.

In the period 1980 - 1990 Vietnam was the poorest country in the world, Vietnam's GDP per capita in 1983 was only 1/10 of the Philippines'. The reason is that Vietnam was involved in wars with France, US from 1945 – 1975, 2 wars with Khmer Rouge, China from 1979 to 1989 and the economic embargo until 1995. After 1995, Vietnam really started the cycle of peace and development. In 1990, Vietnamese economy was the poorest economy in the world, Vietnam's GDP per capita was only 1/8 of the Philippines. According to IMF calculation, GDP per capita has surpassed the Philippines in 2020. The GDP growth rate in the past 25 years is among the top in the world, which is a temporary achievement.
No one recognizes that Vietnamese people are smart if Vietnam is still poor. People will say Vietnamese are smart if Vietnamese economy can develop as Korea, Japan and Taiwan economies. Currently, Vietnamese people must try to study and work hard to be recognized. However, Vietnamese should not be less confident because Vietnam also has bright spots in economic development and is on the right track.
I think, Vietnamese people should not be proud to be smart people, Vietnamese people need to remember "Smart people do not accept poverty and poor people are not considered smart".

Well, I’m probably sure that is because of brain drains and also the parental fixed perceptions to their child.
Typical Vietnamese parents’desire is that their children will get accepted to good university, work for a foreign company and even get marriage with a foreigner.
So yeah, some are really smart and they too globalized and somehow they forgot that where they were born.
They are attracted by all the rapid development of the developed countries.
Because they are young and they are so easily effected.
Sadly, the government have offer the talented so many benefits but nothing can stop the brain drains.
Hopefully, the problem can be fixed and we can make a great Vietnam just like how America does to their own country.

Firstly, they dont have any chance to study when they were a kid. Their parent did not have enough money for their study. So when they grow up, they can not get a good job for their lives. So they are poor.
Secondly, they satisfied with what they have.
And the last, the world is growing. All what they have is too small to catch up the grow of the world. And they give up.

That’s because Vietnam is suffering from a brain drain. All the smart Vietnamese have emigrated to Western countries, only the dumb people and corrupt commies are staying therefore contributing nothing of value to the country.
