I can still remember the night I walked into a local Tokyo restaurant in Japan and everyone stared at me in silence.
“What’s everyone looking at?” One of the Japanese cooks began laughing to add life to the awkward moment.
Being black in Japan is a unique experience, but not exactly how I expected it to be. Most Japanese residents were friendly and very business minded.
Tokyo is the biggest city in the world and you will get lots of looks and stares while you travel through as a black person. Many people are curious about you and will ask you questions about why you decided to come to Japan.
I spent the majority of my time in Roppongi, the neighborhood for expats. You will find lots of black expats living there as well. Spending time in Roppongi made me feel at ease since they are many western expats living there.
You’ll be fine if you are planning a short trip since Japan is very safe and friendly towards foreigners. Respect the culture, stay away from excessive drinking, and you should have a great time.
When I was in Tokyo, specifically Roppongi, there were many, many Nigerians. Japan is a one of the most homogeneous countries in the world…I for sure felt like an outsider as a white person.
Leart Japanese before you go there is stated in the article, as it were a matter of a couple of hours or days. I am a linguist from Hungary speaking a fluent English and Russian and at a lower level three other Indoeuropan languages. I learned Japanese as well, after one year I knew about a thosand kanji, hiragana and katakana, Yet I was unable to read any text in that language. Speaking was also limited to a few simple utterances.
Japan is insular, and homogeneous. They have not seen the likes of you.
Such is/was the case in my country of Sweden. The first time we (at school) saw a Korean girl….!
Boys wanted her. Girls wanted to be her. (I guess some girls also wanted her!)
Japanese generally appear to be friendly because that is what is expected of them. The reality may be very different.
Ironically, in some ways living in Japan while black is even safer than here in the United States. I lived in Aomori Prefecture for three year and absolutely enjoyed the Japanese people and culture. In all, I live in Asia for 8-years in three countries.
I simply learned the language as well as I could and adhered to their customs. As a result, my wife, two small children and I roamed the country and never felt threatened. Conversely……
I’m an African-American woman who has been to Japan annually since 2012 for work and travel. I absolutely love Japan and have made many friends there. I’ve always been treated with respect and never felt threatened or afraid to travel by myself to many cities in Japan (Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, Kobe, Yokohama and many more small towns and surrounding regions). It does help if you learn to speak some Japanese and have an understanding of the customs. Yes, I will admit that I experience more discrimination in the United States.
Its a national embarrassment of Black Africans, thats blacks have to seek home in other non black cultures in order to feel safe. As long as the number of blacks are low, blacks in Asian countries will be tolerated.
Well, I live in Okinawa, so its quite different from mainland Japan. Its a hybrid of sorts between America and Japan, but still, remains untainted by most of America's racism.

As long as they learn and abide by the societal rules and can speak some Japanese, black people should be fine in Tokyo. I've lived in Tokyo twice (soon to be three times), and they were some of the best experiences of my life. Black people aren't specifically looked down upon in the same way as they are in the west (and, from what I've heard, several other Asian countries). People will stare sometimes, but people stare at foreigners in general in Japan, and this is much less common in Tokyo than in other regions.
I'm not sure if you mean African-American black, but one of my African-American friends who live in Japan said "it's better to be discriminated in Japan than be discriminated in my own country".
I don’t want to admit it, but the truth is that Japan doesn’t likely to accept anyone, except their own kind.
I remember when I was sitting on the train, this black foreigner is sitting in front of me. Beside him, there’s plenty of empty seats but no one attempt to sit beside him. Instead of sitting, everyone chooses to stand, even the old people persist standing. It’s quite sad that a big city like Tokyo has this kind of phenomenon.
You don't need to worry about your skin colour. We don't care if you are black or white. We don't speak to your skin. We'll speak to YOU. Do you know what I mean? We are human so we don't separate treatment between white and black.
Unfortunately people of African ancestry and others who have a bit of dark skin complexion(like myself) are victims of certain racial discrimination wherever you go and Japan is not an exception for this.Fortunately, as time goes by,there is more migration which results in multiculturalism and tolerance which is quite apparent in Europe and even in Japan . As of now,I think a black person can easily get by in Japan. I've seen lot of black guys owning night clubs, dating Japanese girls, even anime became tolerant as I've seen many great Anime characters who appear African. Infact,I personally have a couple of friends over there whose dad/mom is of african descent. The older generation may or may not like foreigners but the younger generation is quite liberal. So I don't think it's a problem there..Good luck..And if u are staying there on a long term basis, follow the golden rule--learn the Japanese language, it's not easy but not that hard either.
From what I've heard, if one is an African person living in Japan they have to be prepared for the fact that everyone will assume that you are African American. Since you are African American, this is not an issue.
Beyond that I don't think you'll have a hard time living in Tokyo. Especially if you speak Japanese, or at least try to speak Japanese. You'll probably fare better than persons from other Asian countries since African American culture is something of interest there.
"Japan really loves black people."
My older sister, who is black, is currently in a tiny little town in Japan. She is the only black person in the town, so she gets a lot of attention from the press. She won a ginger-stacking competition and was featured in the newspaper because of it, and has been on TV about three times. Previously, she stayed with a host family in much bigger region. Her host family was very kind and she was never openly discriminated against.
I have had a small number of black college students from the US, the Dominican Republic, Switzerland (yes, Switzerland), and other countries in my English language courses in Japan. They have been very positive about their experience in Japan.
In my own neighborhood I sometimes see small groups of school age kids that include at least one who appears of have an African or Afro-American parent. I hear these kids speaking Japanese; they appear to be fully accepted as just another Japanese kid.Tokyo is not, of course, all of Japan and I have read that in cities near some US military bases there can be problems.
