When I went back in 2019, the structures hadn't changed much and there hadn't been much economic development (if any), but people's ideas were so different, I didn't agree with anyone about anything anymore. Several months later, I left, and  am living in Asia again. 'Home' doesn't stay the same.

I’m Australian and I can confirm we’re screwed. Our economy is too dependent on China. Our exports are completely screwed. Our unis are all screwed because we’re entirely dependent on rich Chinese students paying their tuition, and the pandemic has dealt a devastating blow on this source of income. I work at a uni and we’ve recently fired a ton of people because we’re almost broke. Meanwhile, Morrison is still pandering to his conservative sinophobic base, doing what the US tells it to do, while naively hoping China would resume talks. At the same time, New Zealand is just quietly minding its own business and trade between them and China is booming as ever.I may not agree with the things the Chinese government does but neither do I agree with the things the US government does. I don’t get why we have to pick sides, it’s not like the Americans are saints, because they’re sure as hell not. I don’t get why we have to embroil ourselves into this mess just because the US would like to sabotage China’s rise. And because of this it’s the Australian people and the Australian economy that suffers.

I feel sad to see Australia and China become enemies. I am a Chinese student studying in Australia. I have lived in Australia for five years. I really like the environment, people and culture of Australia. Everyone is very friendly, although there are racist people yelling on the street sometimes, which making me sad. Anyway, talking about the changes in China, every year I go back to China from Australia to visit my family, I feel that I have left behind, Can't keep up the life style if you know what I mean, such as paying on the phone, You don't even need to bring cash with you which is crazy!! There are so many things that have changed. Sometimes I just hope that people can stop hating each other and make progress together, to build a better world.
