Boris Johnson given warning over plans for longer school days and five-term years

Longer school days, shorter holidays and five-term years are all on the table to help kids catch up - but Ofsted chief inspector Amanda Spielman warned they had a mixed record

The head of Ofsted has issued a sharp warning to Boris Johnson over plans for longer school days, shorter holidays and five-term years.

Tory Gavin Williamson today confirmed the three drastic options were on the table as part of an 18-month catch-up plan for kids.

But Ofsted chief inspector Amanda Spielman said similar ideas have not been a “long-standing success in the past” and “I don’t think many of those have persisted”.

She said kids have been “lonely, bored, miserable" in lockdown and should get the “full ration of schooling”, but the government must "learn from" experiments in the past.

She told Sky News' Sophy Ridge on Sunday: "There’s no point adding time here and ridding time there if you don’t get a groundswell of support.

"If children simply don’t turn up for extra time or summer schools for example, you could end up putting a lot of effort into something that doesn’t achieve the obxtive.

"So my concern is to make sure we go with the grain of what parents will embrace to make sure all children get the very most out of their education."

Ms Spielman also said she was looking forward to the prospect of secondary pupils - who return this week - no longer having to wear masks in the classroom after the Easter holidays.

She said: “We’ve been told the face mask guidance will be reviewed at Easter I think. So I love the idea of children being able to come back in the summer term able to see everybody fully.”

It comes after the Education Secretary said longer school days, shorter breaks and five-term years were on the table.

Gavin Williamson said the issued would be considered in a lengthy review by the government's catch-up tsar Kevan Collins.

Asked if the school summer holidays could be shortened to help pupils catch up or schools could move to a five-term year, Mr Williamson told Sky News: “It’s a whole range of different proposals that we’re looking at.

“Whether it’s a five-term year, whether it’s lengthening the school day.

“But also measures such as enhancing the support we give to teachers, supporting them in their professional development, making sure they can be the very best of themselves.”

Asked again if changes to the school holidays were seriously on the table, he added: “We’re looking at holidays, we’re looking at lengthening the school day, we’re looking at a whole range of measures.

“We’ve asked Sir Kevan Collins to leave no stone unturned. For us, we see this as one of those moments a little bit like the 1944 Education Reform Act that came out of the second world war.”

He said Sir Kevan Collins would be looking over 18 months at a “whole series of options and changes”.

He added: “It’s not just all going to be in one day when it’s all announced, there’s going to be a whole series of actions we are going to undertake to improve the life chances and education of children from the most disadvantaged backgrounds, but actually all children.”

Teachers' unxs have branded the catch-up announcements a "distraction" from efforts to get kids back in England's classrooms from tomorrow - a move the unxs say should be phased like in Scotland and Wales.

NASUWT General Secretary Dr Patrick Roach said on Friday: “Teachers and school leaders do not need this distraction from the Education Secretary. They are working hard to finalise their preparations to reopen fully on 8th March.”

He added: “Rather than dredging up tired ideas Gavin Williamson should be focusing his time and energy on supporting the work of teachers and schools, ensuring that schools reopen safely on Monday and that everything that can be done is done to keep them open.”

Kevin Courtney, Joint General Secretary of the National Education unx, warned ministers against piling fresh pressure on teachers.

“Any proposals to change term times or holidays will need to consider that teachers already work more unpaid overtime than any other profession, and that excessive workload is the reason that many teachers and school leaders leave teaching,” he said.
