There's one thing about Russians my dad always brought up. Every time we talked about them “Old hairy dudes" (as we call our northern brethren with affection) my dad would bring it up.

“Do you know how many Russians ended up defecting during WWII?” My dad always started with a question.
“No. How many?” (I know the answer but I played along)

“Do you know how many Chinese collaborators fighting FOR the Japanese Imperial army?” (he's talking about 伪军 or Collaborationist Chinese Army - Wikipedia).
“how many?”
“Over a million" My dad would get really pissed off at this point.

“你知道有多少皇协军为日本皇军作战？”（他说的是伪军，或皇协军）
“多少？”
“一百多万。”我父亲说到这时会非常生气。

“Over a million Chinese would help the Japanese invaders and fight our own people! Can you believe that?! If (battle of) Stalingrad happened in China we'd give up on the first day!”

“一百多万中国人帮助日本侵略者与自己人作战！简直难以置信？！如果斯大林格勒战役发生在中国，我们头一天就缴械了！”

That's a bit unfair we did fight for Nanjing for like over a month (see Battle of Shanghai - Wikipedia) before we're finally defeated. My dad can be a spiteful self-loathing Chinese. I don't blame him the more one learn about our own history the more likely one end up like that. Having the most comprehensive and longest continuous written history means we see the worst of the worst of our own people can do to each other.

Looking up north we often observe a certain nobility in Russian people. Sure like other “white ghosts" (or foreign devil) we often poke fun at their short (?) history 500 years ago Moscow was some regional medi town by some river. But you can’t deny their heroism first against Napoleon then against Hitler.

往北看，我们总能发现俄罗斯人民表现出的某种高尚品格。当然，如其他“白鬼子”（或洋鬼子）一样，我们总是笑话其历史短暂，500年前，莫斯科还是个建在河边上，地区级的中世纪城镇。但你否认不了他们的英雄主义情节，先是反抗拿破仑，后是希特勒。

“It's their winter" as my dad often say “it hardens people unlike us. We bend over backwards at the first sign of overwhelming force". In other words Chinese we don't do Alamo.
Russians do. And they have winter on their side.

There were way more than a few thousand K supporters of the Germans. The big difference is what happens afterwards.
If after you defected to the Japanese you then redefected back to work for the Motherland all was forgiven and whatever you did for the Japanese was swept under the rug.

The Russians that worked for the Germans were pretty much all killed after the war. Once you cross the line there was nothing you could to do cross back.

Actually only a rather small proportion were executed the vast majority were given long labor camp sentences that were commuted after Stalin died so most of them ended up serving about 10 years in labor camps.

No matter how much the government hates you or how deep you get into the underground the Chinese government and mafias will try very hard not to kill you. The government will toss you in jail and the mafia will put you in the hospital for months. But killing you makes you powerful and is taken as a sign of weakness.

不管政府有多恨你，也不管你藏得有多深，中国政府和黑手党们会尽其最大努力不去杀你。政府会将你扔进牢里，而黑手党们则会送你进医院待个把月。但杀你的话反而会反转情势让你强大，且这被视为是软弱的表现。

I’ve noticed that the Russian mafia and government aren’t under these limitations.
The other thing that I’ve noticed is that Russian intellectuals seem to consider “business” to be shady. which is an attitude I’ve found less amount Chinese intellectuals.

Eastern Societies unfortunately are prone to slow rot; a type of rot where it is slow and hard to notice causing a very slow decay of the Society in question unlike the fast rot of Western Societies which either kills the Society and reforms it into something new and stronger or forces reform and the killing of the Rot.
I don't know which is worse.

Gotta disagree on the lack of violence part. Back in the golden days of youth gangsterism in the 90s basketball yards in Hong Kong's public estates were notorious for being the battlegrounds of choice for knife-wielding mobs.

The ability of the Chinese for tribal self-organization no matter what is astounding to me as a Russian. No matter where they are they coagulate into tightly-knit communities with a fabulous level of self-policing.

AFAIK they are about as law-abiding (or as criminal) as most of the earthlings. But somehow the crime inside their communities doesn’t radiate violence. Wherever destiny lands a little group of them around the world they pull this off every time without a heavy hand of a ruler or intricate conventions of democratic governance.
