I have never agreed with any video more than this one.
Yes, China, particularly the CPC is borderline autistic when it comes to cultural and media engagement with the outside world, not just the Western world, but even with countries like Russia, Pakistan and Iran.
And we all know China can do so much better than this. Chinese civilization was once the envy of the world. All her neighbors emulated Chinese culture and even adopted Chinese identities. Nowadays, even the Vietnamese are pretending like it's not "Chinese New Year" but "Lunar New Year".
I blame much of this on the Marxist obsession with material conditions. Money isn't everything. Culture matters more than most Chinese leaders realize.
But there is hope. You can see from recent changes in China's visa policy and promotion of influencers that they're beginning to understand the importance of soft power. But it's still too little, too slow.

Hi Nathan, China does not seek to be a world leader. She prefers we all coe*st in a multi-polar world, each country contributes towards a sustainable, prosperous and peaceful world. The Chinese are very much influenced by the Confucious teachings. One of them is that: "A gentleman (scholar) should practise 1. Appreciate all things material (natural resources), 2. Cultivate one's inner-most attitude, 3. Look after your family, 4. Govern your country with good governance, 5. Bring peace to the world.". To be a world leader is not one of them.
Currently the daily worries of President * ** and his CPC are their 1.4bn people, if they are well fed, well dressed and living a middle class life. And of course trying to bring peace to the world at the same time. "Hel* to construct a community with a shared future for mankind, - * **.

For China to be prosperous China will need to lead. Like it or not, most countries are looking for leadership because having a leader means stability. Countries will know how to behave and work around the leader's expectation. And being a leader grants it huge benefits.

I, a Chinese living in US, agree with you wholeheartedly. My generation of Chinese intellectuals lag behind China's success. They still live in the Western rhetoric. They need to wake up to reality. And hopefully new generation Chinese intellectuals will lead the task.
@asw654
In my experience, you're likely in the minority.
Chinese living in the US that I met are:
mostly washed from birth, desperate to combat perpetual foreigner syndrome by acting as American as possible.
Taiwanese, Hong Kong, etc who are more inclined to identify with that subgroup to further distinguish themselves.
Mainlanders who came here to study and hate the pressures they had from the mainland and want to believe they got an advantage and that they are special for coming here.
Pretend to be neutral.
All of them somewhat influenced by decades worth of anti-Chinese propaganda.
So their opinions of China tend to be mildly negative.
@sino-us-observer
@asw654 Yes. I am in the minority among Chinese Americans. When I arrived in US in 1990s, I am all for Western democracy. After 2008 financial crisis, I gradually realized there is deep problem in the Western society. Then I see China has made huge progress in all aspects. I hope more people can see that.
@George-k6o9t
@asw654 Agree 100% with what you have commented in on your observations of the different Chinese sub-groups. It's not that much different from the times when the Romans ruled much of Europe and North Africa and their influence upon the various local people they have come into touch with.

Wait for good NEWS .. when Taipei finally reunited with the mainland, all good Chinese living in US will be going to Taiwan and given NEW Passports ROC .
@deadbutmoving
I VERY MUCH disagree with you. China (And Asians in general) SHOULD NEVER become like the West in this regard.
The problem I have with Westernize Chinese (And Asians) is that they've adopted some very annoying habits from the West. One of the most annoying habits that they've adopted from the West is this attention seeking obsession of Western pop/social culture. Or perhaps the bullying and propaganda they have been subjected to makes them insecure about themselves and leads to them to developing an unhealthy obsession with other people's opinions of them. Either way, I think constantly seeking the approval of others is something Asians should STAY FAR AWAY FROM. As the old saying goes: "If you seek other people's approval YOU BECOME THEIR PRISONER". Wasting too much time endlessly arguing and seeking to win the validation of others is why the West is losing to China. Spend time on more constructive and productive things.
The Results of actions and deeds speak for themselves. Winning an argument and making yourself look good, might make you feel good in the moment, but in the scheme of things, it ultimately doesn't matter.
Thank god, I don't think most Chinese people (and Asians from Asia) want the attention and spotlight that Westerners crave soo much. We are much more secure about ourselves and our identity and less concerned about what other people think about us. This is our one true edge over the West, India, and the rest of the world. Let them argue and speak badly of us, it'll give them something to do to distract themselves, while we make more and more solid advancements in the world.

With 1.416 billion mouths to feed every single day, leading China alone is a superman overtime job. I don't think her leaders get much rest at night
@IkeFromCN
Ruling a country is never a one man job. governments didn't show them but they are working
@truthbearer888
China has no desire to lead the world as Western culture view leadership. China has always focused on its own citizens. It has 1.4 billion people. That alone is a monumental job to keep peace and prosperity within its own borders.
If other countries want to have win-win relationships with China, then that trust and relationship must be exhibited through their actions over time.
China can keep its economy going just by ciruclating its resources within its borders. It has all the resources and people to serve each other.

China has always been a great nation! Our confusism believes did cause China a diastrous dilemma during the late Qing Dynasty-WW2 era simply because we do not believe in controlling other countries by force and all people should live in harmony. Hence other countries should respect China in the same way! But China was robbed down to the bones by foreign invasions! Some even said China deserved it because it is China's false not to be able to defend itself!
Since it was proven to be wrong and New China since then had woken and geared up to protect oursleves but countries like USA, UK Japan still trying to slander China because they know deep down, they cannot do what they did to China during the WW2 era anymore and by accusating China to be TOO heavily armed militarily darken China world peace policies by the "communist" government!
The point is no one can point out the advantage how democracy can be better than Communism and democratic countries like USA did more inhuman operation throughout the past decades and left a lot of countries and lands ruined, millions of people died! If that is the best democracy can do to other countries, what is there to tell?
One man one vote does not meant anything and at the end of the day, we need to see what they did and doing to the world!
@KaiserHooray
In fact, if you do a bit of digging, you will find lixs between many YouEss prez and the 3-letter agency. Their family or parents worked for the agency and they themselves were recruited before their political career. Then, the agency manufactures their rise in politics. That "first black prez" was a glaring example.
@horridohobbies
To be a world leader is an awesome responsibility. Why should China seek this? Historically, when has China ever sought this? What's in it for the Chinese?
It is enough that China leads by example. China shows the world that peaceful development is possible. China respects all nations; she does not interfere in other nations' internal affairs. How other nations govern themselves is none of China's business.
When you are a world leader, you make yourself a target. Others will inevitably try to knock you off your perch.
China works within the frxwork of a unified world order to share peace and common prosperity. China helps other nations like a good neighbour should.
To be a world leader requires hubris and a sense of self-righteousness. China is not like that.
@Extra-Celestial7
Proactively seeking world leadership by hooks or by crooks requires hubris and arrogance, being pushed into that role despite reluctance is another story.

Sun Tzu's The Art of War says that knowing yourself and the enemy will ensure victory in a hundred battles. It is suitable for you that the enemy does not know you. Therefore, the rumors the enemy spreads about you are helping you win. If you want to win, you will only be happy when you see your enemies spreading rumors about you, and you may even cheer them on. Of course, average folks will be unhappy when others spread rumors about them. They are ordinary folks, not competitors, nor winners, because winners enjoy the losers' spit and curses.

To be honest, as a Chinese, I don't think majority of Chinese want to see China as a "world leader". We simply want to be great AGAIN, to be respected, and help others to prosper as well.
We never or the majority of us never want to become another Qing Dynasty or another USA.
Great video

China should just going its own way by respecting countries, doing great products and holding its promises. Anyone who is interested in China or its history should come to China and make his/her own picture and not listen to the media

Well, sometimes it's not a choice—fate often puts you in a position where you must lead. Then, as Nathan said, be a good leader: someone who knows how to communicate, be fair, open-minded, and so on—and not become a hegemon.
It's scary to become a leader, because the only direction from there is down. To be a good leader, one must also know how to be a good follower.
When the time to go down, then go down gracefully - not like the US now. Don't bring everyone down - just understanding that there is time to go up, and there is time to go down. It's natural.

I think a "leader" is not necessary a bully one like US. In fact US-like leader usually creates more problems.
Thinking about leading a project team. You can be a good leader to: 1 set up environments so everyone can easily cooperate, and 2 provide required resources and assistance to clear obstacles.
I think China tries to move towards such cooperating role, which mainly focuses itself but also allow other countries to do their own things.

As an ethnically Chinese person who was born and lives in Malaysia, I fully agree with you. Leading the world is a burdensome responsibility and definitely not a mandate from heaven for China. Becoming prosperous is definitely the priority even if it means going to the far corners of the world.
@86soulx
also to be fair, given China's rapid growth, it doesn't really matter if majority of the Chinese want to see China as a "world leader". China is by definition, already a world leader like it or not. Sometimes a world leader needs to act like a world leader. With great power comes great responsibility.
